Columbus City Council Meeting
June 3, 2024
Meeting Highlights:

Implementing Summer Learning Programs For Youth
President Pro Tem Rob Dorans is supporting ordinance 1186-2024 in support of providing at-risk children with the curriculum that will prepare them for kindergarten. The Columbus Early Learning Center (CELC) is requesting to partner with the Summer Success Program at the Hilltop Early Learning Center (SSHELC) with a focus on providing quality learning for kindergarten readiness. Programming is expected to begin June 1, 2024.
Grants for Village Programs
Councilmember Nancy Day-Achauer is sponsoring ordinance 1439-2024 which supports various village programs across the city. These programs provide opportunities for older adults to age in place and receive home maintenance services and transportation by people in their community at a lower cost than the market rate. Councilmember Day-Achauer allocated a total of $100,000 to support these programs in the 2024 Operating Budget to ensure that volunteers and the older adults they serve have the resources they need to maintain a high quality of life.
Loan Forgiveness For Qualifying Homeowners
Councilmember Shayla Favor is sponsoring ordinance 1458-2024 to authorize a total of $1.4 million in home loan forgiveness by the Department of Development Housing Division. The homeowner forgiveness policy, enacted in 2023, ensures that the City’s programs do not perpetuate inequitable outcomes or limit wealth-building opportunities for those who have faced a legacy of systematic disinvestment.
An Alternative To Assisted Living Facilities
Councilmember Melissa Green is sponsoring ordinances 1484-2024 and 1486-2024 in support of The Pre-Admission Screen System Providing Options and Resources Today (PASSPORT) Medicaid program. The PASSPORT program is a statewide Medicaid waiver designed to provide an alternative to nursing home care. Funding is provided by the Ohio Department of Aging and the federal government through a Medicaid waiver. The Central Ohio Area Agency on Agency (COAAA) currently serves about 8,700 individuals through the PASSPORT program.
