www.columbusnei... Town meets gown in this urban area encompassing the neighborhoods around The Ohio State University.
The Old North was the first neighborhood here, and a series of remarkable transformations has seen this area change from farm to campus to streetcar suburbs to a center of education, recreation, and culture.
The most densely populated area in Columbus, the University District is also the location of nearly 650 businesses, churches, schools, and social agencies.
Produced by WOSU as part of its six-part documentary series, Columbus Neighborhoods.

I was a Freshman in '94 and Campus Partners and the destruction of the entire South Campus bar scene was a real bummer. They shut it down and did nothing for a decade. It was a giant hole in the earth where those before me enjoyed campus life. All the drinking and partying moved from a place that was well lit and policed, to the off campus house parties, and that was not a good place to be. Violence, rapes, fires. Now a music and party scene where college students could relax and or blow off steam, has been replaced with Panera.

I don't know how old you are, but I went to Ohio State in 1990s. You missed all the real action! I lived in South Campus in 1989. I had a 2 bedroom full basement brownstone, where Taco Bell is. $315 per month! There were some real dope night clubs across the street! "High Energy", "Flyers Cafe", "Papa Joe' s", "The Oar House", "The Mine Shaft" , "Mean Mr. Mustard's" , "The Travel Agency" and "Presley's"!! And the were all within a 3 block radius!! Great Times and great Memories!! Those places are all gone now! But will live forever in my memory!! Ohio State is all "paturized" and "homogenized." It's so boring and plastic looking! Yep, Ohio State's roudy, fun traditions are long gone! So sad!!!

@@cpman1987 all those places existed when I started school, but during my freshman year, they tore it all down and it was a giant f'ing hole for my entire tenure at OSU.

44:07, middle left in the back, it is none other than Don Bovee, a mainstay of the Columbus High Street Music Scene up to 2015 or so. Edit: R.I.P Don Bovee and the HSMS.

A. Yes I remember the drunk ropes! B. George Ziegler was my landlord, I lived right in front of his log cabin and we used to drink martinis. He had the MOST FASCINATING life of anyone I’ve ever met.

I appreciated the history presented here and the diversity of interviewees. This series is really amazing overall for sure. But hey, I miss Crazy Mama’s and the Berg. It was a rough, gritty, neighborhood when I started living there at 16, but I sure wish it still existed today. Some of those buildings were historic. Did you know the South Heidelberg used to be a speakeasy back in the day? Id love to learn more about that. What an amazing bar that could be to visit today! And Crazy Mama’s? Mecca of the punk and New Wave scene, if those mirrored walls could talk... And anyone who was there knows the Buckeye Carryout has a history of its own. All shrouded in the steam of fresh baked bread from the huge bakery next door. And what is all of that now? A Barnes and noble? A movie theater? Really?? Gentrification in the name of building bigger buildings for more real estate$$$ is gross. The Mom and Pop stores that were the fundamental gems of the campus area, markets, laundromats, shoe stores, etc., could never afford to have storefronts or houses there now. Pushing out the people who created that neighborhood, instead of integrating solutions and restorations, was an excuse to build a glorified strip mall. I said then and I’ll say it again: Campus partners = greed. A bummer indeed.

It’s the OSU Armory. A fire in June 1958 caused significant enough damage that the Armory was torn down in 1959.

Thank God it's not the 60's any more. Stupid "traditions" like that have long since died away and the city is better because of it.
