3:38 You could see the gears changing in the screen on top of the speed screen For me on trucks and big vehicles Column shifter is the best for aesthetic reasons and for space also easy to use Then second is the console shifter on trucks yes it takes space but at least you feel you are doing something and I like it more in other kind of vehicle more than a column shifter And the least favorite is the electronic gear like buttons or rotary shifters are not good I'm changing gears and operating a car or a truck not a washing machine 😭 If they want to go with a electric gears or shifters they could do it like Mercedes the gear is a small electric column shifter on the steering wheel or like BMW console shifter and both still electric ones not mechanical at least like this it's gonna keeps it better aesthetically 😂 in this case I wouldn't mind the electric gear shifter for its safety as well
For some reason am obsessed with column shifters on vehicles, probably because, like you said, it’s old school and in my opinion, it just looks more badass and I’m trying to look for a vehicle that has a column shifter in it :)
Absolutely hate the dial/rotary shifter. The console shifter is something for sports/luxury cars. For trucks (half tons & heavy duties), vans, minivans, SUVs, and even most cars, the column shifter is the best. It saves space, creates extra seating and storage space in the center, and probably saves cost for the manufacturer so the prices are lower for the vehicle consumers too. In the past 30 years or so, I’ve had a Buick, a Taurus, a Dodge Caravan, a Dodge Ram, another Ram, and a FI50 now all with column shifters. Had to buy the F150 because the half ton Ram doesn’t have column shifters anymore. Other than the Ram trucks, it’s a shame that most SUVs, Vans/minivans, and cars don’t have column shifters anymore either.
I do plowing with my 5th Gen 3500. I COULD NEVER EVER deal with a dial when plowing. Too much Back and forth reverse to drive shifts to deal with a dial shift. When I bought this truck I specifically requested no dial shift.
Way too many commercials for such a short video. You also fail to mention that currently, at least, GM only has column shift and Ford only gives you the floor shift on Lariat and above trims. I'd rather have the column shift; its out of the way and its truckish. I am not a fan of the dial in the Ram 1500 but it is not a deal breaker since the rest of the truck is so good. With cars and CUVs becoming so automated, I like to be able to get into a truck and have it feel like a truck should feel-substantial and familiar. A column or console shift are my preference.
I like the Column Shift on an Avalon. Column Shift is so convenient it is only a few inches away from the wheel. I never have to take my eyes off the front window.
One when you said that if you have the truck in drive and you open the door, it would put itself in P, I had a Chrysler 200 and that stupid thing didn't even do that. I had to think for it instead of it thinking for me. I had issues with that dial. I'm glad I got rid of it and went back to an actual gear shift.
Have the console shifter. Sometimes I move the truck with the door open to hook the trailer. I would find it annoying I couldn't do it with the rotary as it goes into P when the door is open.
Yup that's a deal breaker for me also. I hook up to a trailer 4 days a week. Also open door sometimes while in reverse to back up to my exact spot. But I like the column shifter on my Silverado trail boss. Much smoother and faster then ram column shifter and looks better. Not just a straight bar sticking straight out
Console. Without a doubt! I grew up in the column shifter era and it just reminds me of a big 70s caddy that you’re throwing into gear. I like the sporty fee of a modern console shift lever. Gives me something to rest my hand on. 😊
It’s just an opinion and I hope you like my opinion. Since you are going to release two videos a day I hope that you make some videos about the great state of Utah and where the places to go. Thank you very much and I always support your great channel.
I actually like the Rotary shifter in my 2019 Ram Rebel. I almost didn’t get the Ram because of this, but now I love it. Once you get use to it, it feels natural in my opinion. And no I don’t confuse the volume button with the shifter. I know some of you refuse to get a truck with a rotary shifter. I think the rotary is better than a push button shifter.
Imagine trying to line this truck up on a lift and getting thrown into park and smacking your head on the steering wheel when you open the door. Had this happen at our shop many times. Sucks for maintenance too because you can't get the vehicle into neutral without the engine running unless you tear apart panels and look for the release. I say column shifter and console shifter are my favorite, as long as it isn't electronic interference where it can decide to not let you put your vehicle in neutral the moment you get a trans fault or you need to be towed ect. I get the safety aspect, but nothing beats the mechanical feel of shifting.
I drive a crown victoria with the column shifter, I find myself turning on the windshield wipers instead of shifting gears when I step into a vehicle with a console shifter 😄.
Anyone tried retrofitting the new Ram with a column shifter? The heavy duty Rams have the column shifter, has anyone tried to install one from a heavy duty into a half ton? If so, please let me know how you did it or is there a shop that you know of that can do such a modification. Thanks in advance for the info.
Just a question guys, I’m a huge fan of column shifter, what are in 2020 the pickup trucks models still allowing me to get the column shifters ? Cheers
Column shifter, the mechanical linkage (on older trucks) is more reliable then the auto select..I have an 06 Ram 1500 and a 2019 Ram 1500..I don't think iv ever had a problem with the 06 old school... although the rotary shifter is convenient I guess...🤷🏻♂️
I liked the column shifter in my 1998 Ram. Sure I could accidentally get into the wrong gear on occasion, but it was never a safety issue b/c I had my foot on the brake and could easily correct it before driving. Same thing can happen w/a console shifter though. I might like a dial, I don't know (hence the reason why I hesitate to get another Ram). I'm glad to know there are safety features in the dial, where you have to put your foot on the brake before shifting. But that means the driver (or even a passenger) could still reach for the dial and accidentally (or purposely for a prank) change gears at a stop sign or red light. I would prefer if they had a 2nd safety layer like needing to push and turn, etc. But in any case, dialing my gear just seems weird to me - I like something more substantial to grab when shifting. Also, Consumer Reports feels so strongly against dial shifters that they won't put any models with that feature on their Recommended list. Finally, I hate console shifters not only b/c they take up floor space (personally I'd like to see a built-in Kleenex compartment and wastebasket compartment there, but that's not going to happen), but also I've more than once spilled my drink on the floor shifter, which gets into the gearbox, making shifting very sticky. Practically impossible to do if the gear shifter is up and out of the way.
The dial shifter is electronic and i believe if the battery dead you cannot get it out of park. Big problem. Otherwise, I like the dial shifter for the console space it frees up for storage.
Hi great video. I am in the process of buying a new truck. I like the Console Shifter it is the only one I can use because of a disability with my right hand. I wanted to buy a Maverick and they only make it with a Rotary Shifter .I called the Ford office in Detroit, they will not build one with Console Shifter. I will look elsewhere. this was a helpful video.
I grew up with the column shifter. When I bought my H2 and I got use to using it. The rotary and the push button shifters I need to get use to those systems
All full-sized pickup trucks with automatic transmissions came with column shifters from the factory until 2004, when both Ford and Nissan introduced them to the F-150 and the Titan, respectively. Toyota followed suit in 2007, as did Dodge in 2009 before they came out with the dial in 2013. Interestingly, Nissan reverted to the column shifter on the 2016 Titan. Chevrolet and GMC didn’t add a console shifter to their half-ton trucks until 2022. All heavy duty pickups kept their column shifters until 2019 when Dodge introduced the dial on the Ram HD; however, this is only on gasoline models. Dodge diesels are still using the column shifter, although that’s likely to change when they finally put a new transmission behind the Cummins, hopefully in 2024.
I like to know and feel what gear I’m on when driving so the last is out. Console shifters take up too much room. Column shifters are more practical. Who would trust their car with a stereo speaker volume control. No way.
It's easier with a column shifter when you are trying to rock back and forth when your stuck in the snow because you can keep you hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
Console shifter. Even though it takes space, trucks now how so much storage capacity that it's really a none issue. It has a nice sport look and I like to rest my right arm on it.
Floor shifter all the way! Not a fan of column shifters too old school. I remember accidents happening when column shifters were accidentally hit and put into drive.
I'd like to know this about rotary and push button shifters: if your parking brake shoes are no longer holding properly when parked on a slope, and the parking pawls get slightly jammed, you can feel extra resistance when trying to shift from park to drive when using a mechanical column or console shifter. Often a little extra force will be enough to get it out of park. Will you be stuck in park in this situation when an electronic rotary or push button shifter? I have never had any issues whatsoever with column shifters. They're simple and reliable because of their mechanical links to the transmission. Electronically controlled rotary and push button shifters are just something more to go wrong. Are the automaker manufacturers listening to this?
No man that gets his hands dirty for work or play wants a rotary shifter! It’s a truck not a smart car! I hate even the floor shifter! Column shifter is the only way to go on a truck! Small truck large truck truck platform suv .... all trucks!!!
What about a manual? Don't you think manual is the right choice for any truck since that what a working truck should have ? Also, with manual you are in control of your truck and actually the one driving the truck not the truck driving you.
Sooo......using the column shifter in a hurry is bad because you can skip the gear you want and accidentally go into a different gear. But on the console shifter, when that happens, it's just "part of learning the truck"? I don't see how a column shifter could be "difficult". Here's a Con for the console shifter though: In cold weather, you get in the truck and that shifter boot is stiff, therefore making it "difficult" to shift. I know, I know...."That's why we have remote start. To get the truck warmed up before we get in." But it's still a valid Con. :-)
For me personally it's a column shifter, if your column shifter feels "vague" to your, or not firm enough then you need to get your linkage checked. Second and most importantly... The dial shifter is unergonomic and dare I say dangerous... Can you imagine in an emergency situation having to do a 3 point turn or quick reverse to drive engagement? Oops fingers slipped, or you fall to get the right gear altogether... Console shifter may be a little bit better in this regard but nothing beats a column shifter for tactile, feedback, and confidence in your shifting. You repeat several times about how you don't like column shifter "taking up all that space and sticking out the side"... But I guess you don't have a problem with the indicator stalk right on the other side of it?
I don't get the confusion with what gear you're in. Every auto trans goes PRND. You can feel each gear. And the engine will run higher RPMs in neutral.
I’ve had a truck with column and a rotary shifter. I like that rotary. Just took a minute to get use to. I bet everybody who doesn’t like the rotary shifter never used one. And who ever can’t get a column shifter Into gear is a moron
At this point in time, unless it is a manual, all a console shifter does is take away from storage and organization. They have no place, in my opinion with an automatic transmission. We certainly do not need a console and paddle shifters.
I would take he dial shifter or the column shifter simply because I don’t like the look or the fact that the console shifter takes up to much space that could be used for so much other stuff
The rotary shifter isnt a problem. You shouldn't have to open ur door when theres an 8 inch screen that shows everything your camera in the back is picking up. I find it easier when hooking up to my trailer. I have gotten really friendly with my back up camera
