Fix a loose column shifter on ford vehicles. This video will show you how to fix your loose column shifter for an automatic car, specifically a Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, or Mercury. A loose shifter can prevent your car from starting because you cant get into Park or Neutral. It can also leave you stranded by not allowing you to get into Reverse or Drive. I will show you how to identify the problem, tighten the bolts and prevent the problem from occurring again in the future.

It's 9 degrees outside and there's a foot of snow coming. Without the plow on my truck, we would be stranded in our home. But the shifter has been loose, getting looser, and has started making funny pinging sounds while shifting. I shift constantly while plowing: driver, reverse, drive, reverse, drive, reverse. I've been genuinely worried my truck would end up breaking down in the middle of the driveway. THIS VIDEO SAVED MY SKIN! Found the screws, they were the problem. Tightened them up, and now I'm ready for winter. THANK YOU.

This literally fixed 90% of the problem. I was told by a mechanic that the cables needed changing and it could be even more complicated than that once he dove into it, then I watched this video and it was spot on! Thanks for this!! Something else informative was a video on how to line up the shifter indicator in the dash with the appropriate gears (P RND21)… I found another video on that because little red indicator wasn’t aligning properly, and it was also spot on! Thank g-d for videos and people like you!! The mechanic would have ripped me off. Looks like I need to find a new mechanic! 😂

This is a very helpful video. My shifter has been loose for some time and I thought it would be a big ticket item to fix and held off bringing it to a repair shop. A screw fell off under the dash and I had no idea where that came from. It wasn't until I can't put it in park anymore, I thought to check out youtube before going to the shop and saw your video and this was exactly the same problem I had with my 94' Nissan Quest. I followed your video to the T and it took me 15 mins to fix the shifter. Thanks a whole bunch. You saved me a lot of stress and anxiety of driving my car. You Rock!

OMG, Thank you a million times over for creating this video! My Husband is working nights and last night my Son and I had to have our car (Ford Taurus) towed to our house because it wouldn't shift. So upon watching you're video just now I went out to my car, got out my tools and the inside of the car the bolts were tight. I looked under the hood like you showed and sure enough the bolt broke and needs to be replaced but I was able to slide it back in for now, slide it into park and sure enough my car started and shifted gears perfectly. So now I need to go to the parts store to replace that bolt. You are a rock star, once again THANK YOU!!!!

Chris- Thanks for this video and info on the loose column shifter issue in a Ford (Windstar). I've been trying to diagnose this issue for too long, having intermittent starting problems, and not being able to figure it out. I replaced the battery, cleaned the cables, replaced the starter and the neutral safety switch, and still had starting problems, plus the transmission not shifting into gears. Once I tightened these two bolts however, no more starting or shifting problems. Thanks for the great instructional video. All owners of older Fords need to know about these two problematic bolts.

Thank you Chris. This video solved my problems on my 1997 Ford Explorer 9 years after you posted this. It's amazing that Ford created such a wide spread problem like this. The trick for me was loosening one of the other screws first before screwing in the one that fell out. Also needed someone else to help put the shifter into park better while screwing it in. Easily saved me a tow to the repair shop which would probably cost 1k bucks for it all today.

Hi Chris I'm a Ford trained mechanic from England. Actually I'm retired now and living in Canada. I just want to thank you for this quick fix. I have a 1998 Explorer and baby it too much. I was experiencing the shifter problem you cover in your video. This is the genius of Chris Fix. My mechanic charged me $250 for a new shift column tube that did NOT fix the loose shifter on my 1997 Ford E150 van. The curious thing is I found that exact shift column screw lying on my driver's side floor mat and didn't know where it came from until I watched this Chris Fix video above. I then looked under the dash and sure enough the screw was completely missing from the column shifter. I confronted my mechanic with this video above and embarrassed the hell out of him. He had been in the business for 40 years and didn't know about this very common Ford shifter screw back out problem. He said he learned something and actually offered me a job. Thanks Chris Fix!!

Took me 5 minutes and worked like a charm. I was ready to trade in my Ranger that I love because I thought it was the parking pawl. Thanks Chris! Great videos.

Awesome video! Had it fixed in 10 minutes. Found the t30 on the floorboard and couldn't see where it went. It shifts into park again. Thank you!

Absolutely beautiful...........I notice this problem on my 2001 F-150 Lariat. After watching this video, I went out to my truck and discovered there was actually a bolt missing......then I remembered I found one on my truck floor about a month or two ago (not knowing where it came from?). Followed the video instructions and bingo.....good as new. Thank you again !!

Many thanks! Was looking on the net for an answer to what was going on with my sloppy linkage. You saved me a trip to the shop, and not to mention the cost of an easy repair. You Da Man!

Many thanks for completely accurate and timely instructions to rectify the problem on our 1995 F350 Dually. I expected the dealer to hit me up for a couple of hundred bucks with a song and dance about having to check out a myriad of possible sources. Took me twenty minutes to complete and even already had the Loctite. Again, thanks again.

Thank you. This was exactly what was wrong and so easy to fix. My 1997 F350 had gotten to the point that I couldn't shift or get it so that engine would crank over. After seeing the video, went to see if it was the same and found one of the bolts laying on the carpet. Had fallen out. Replaced, tightened, and saved a dealer repair. That has got to be at least $120 in the San Diego area. Thank you very much.

Man, was so bummed that my shifter was loose after I had to replace my column from the firewall including the steering wheel (previous owner broke the hell out of it!) Anyway, 5 minute fix on my 1997 f250. Thank you ChrisFix! Been watching you for years. You rock!

This advice fixed the majority of the slop on my '02 f150. The bushings above the steering column account for the rest of the slop but this fix is enough for now. Thanks for sharing

I had found the video about replacing bushings on column, which didnt seem too hard so I was prepared to do that. Found this video of yours for EVEN EASIER fix, and sure enough it helped a HUGE amount! So it’s all I plan to do about shifting for now. Apparently loose bolts had happened before I bought 2004 F250 couple months ago because one of mine wasn’t torx. Want to get correct replacement now and use loctite. Thanks so much for starting with the “how to find” even before you started the rest! I subscribed. Soon I hope to look up how to get instrument panel gauge lights to work. For now, I’m thrilled to have this IMPORTANT thing fixed!

Thanks Chris! I was having the same problem. Saw a video about replacing the two plastic bushings on the shift rod, so I did, but still had a lot of slop when moving the shifter handle. Also wouldn’t go into park sometimes. Then I saw your video 3 weeks later. Problem solved. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Happiest day !!! The video is short and spot on. I drove with this situation for a year before I got fed up and found your most excellent video. 5 minute fix. Life is good again. You saved me a fortune from bringing it to a mechanic. Ford should be embarrassed for such a crappy design. Keep making videos. Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you !!!!!!!!!!

Great video. Once I realized the bolt heads face the firewall and not the steering wheel - took about 10 minutes.Saved me not only money, but possible disaster as well. Had a few incidents of not being in park and truck began to move.
