Great stuff. So sad these guys gave so much and we are acting like w bunch of self righteous, entitled, lazy, selfish terrorists. Such a sad time for our country. These men knew hard work and respect and pulling together to help your neighbor. I believe it was America’s greatest generation 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 America forever.
Fantastic to see how much film the americans (Army Pictorial Service) took during the whole war. Most of their operations are filmed. Even a chest-camera on a parachuter! Very modern and ahead of its time!
I was a Marine in Vietnam for 20 months--(26th BLT & 1st Marine Div) my opinion, the soldiers, marines, seabees, air wing, navy, 'All' branches of the fighting men & support personnel as well as all of the Allies during WWII were "The Greatest Generation". Salute to "All" military persons past & present & those who have & do support them.
Made it easily serviceable compared to the German Wehrmacht panzers. Even thought we able to get parts for our vehicles, the German people still seemed to get parts , but not enough to keep them in the fight down the road.
August 24, 2019---Thanks for the video. What I like is seeing what it took to supply the G.I.'s with rebuilt equipment. Would make an interesting diorama.
What they didn't show was the hosing out of blood and other human remains from those tanks. I knew men, when I was a kid, who were attached to recovery units. Gruesome.
My dad was a Sgt. USAAC stationed at Waycross Georgia. He told us that in 1944 late summer early fall all stateside military personnel south of the Mason-Dixon line had to turn in there winter overcoats etc for the troops in the ETO
@@reichstreu3362 I don't know if that was a joke or not. There are many accounts of the troops in the ETO not having winter gear. Especially during the "Battle of the Bulge". Band of Brothers not just in the show. They talk about it in the interview part as well. There are stories from the 3rd Armored Division about it as well.
@@Mass_hole508No, nothing to laugh about. I was taking stock of information previously unknown to me (US soldiers caught fighting in the winter of 1944 without coldweather gear) and comparing the US Army's lack of preparation for winter warfare with the wehrmacht's identical situation in Russia in 1941. I find it interesting that the US Army would fail to supply winter clothing for it's soldiers in 1944 when they had 2 years time to anticipate the situation and no excuse for failing to prepare for winter warfare. The Germans, on the other hand, were in a much different situation. They could not begin large-scale prepararion and production of cold weather uniforms without alerting Stalin to their impending pre-emptive invasion of the USSR. As the story goes, in 1941 Stalin refused to listen to his many spies that repeatedly warned him of an imminent German invasion. Instead he watched the market price of mutton and wool knowing prices would be drastically affected if the German Army began to equip its soldiers for the extreme cold of Russia's weather. Because Germany did not prepare and market prices were unaffected Stalin left his forces as vulnerable as possible allowing Germany to achieve the smashing success they did during the initial stages of operstion Barabarossa. Its interesting, thats all.
I don't know why,,, I love the older footage of ww1,2 and Korean war.... nobody wants too see bombs being dropped, but obviously its human nature. Next war we should send the politicalian and businessmen into battles 😃
Great idea. I'd love to see those politicians captured by an enemy...held in a nasty POW camp for a year or two, have their asses kicked every day and one ration of dishwater per day. Even that would be too good for today's politicians, BUT, it would be a great start.
Extra boots and rubber overboots would have been nice. Army loves to find the only mud puddle within miles, then make you walk through it! Dry feet in winter is very important and a dry pair while your others dry out keep the Army moving.
The german Problem was: The allies flow where they want, so often they want. Without any Counter part in the sky. It was a "nice" flying. The Luftwaffe was melt down all around the globe.
The description of Peleliu making it sound like some sort of cake walk, plus that nonsense about why it was invaded in the first place (something about a great landing field) puts this entire series in question, because it's obvious they weren't about to let truth get in the way of their sunny optimism.
mwbright Propaganda never does, and that’s what this film was, a propaganda piece produced by the War Department, known today as the Department of Defense.
Not to mention the debacle that Market Garden became. As Greg says, that's what propaganda is all about. That's why the Yanks hated the access that the media was given in Vietnam - suddenly people were seeing and reading the truth of what was happening.
Matthew Erwin You have to consider who produced these films. They were being produced by the War Dept. Their purpose was to keep the public enthusiastic about the war. They weren’t trying to show the unvarnished reality. The last time the Marines tried that, after Tarawa, recruitment nationwide fell off by about half. Governments produces films to produce government aims. Then and now.
@Matthew Erwin I know why we did it. But I don't think it's necessary, or was necessary back then, to cover up the nonsense thinking that sent all those young guys to Peleliu to get slaughtered like they did. The powers that be realized it was a bullshit schlep going to Peleliu, and tried to cancel it, but the fleet was on its way so they couldn't, or so they said. And we won the fight over there, but it didn't confer a single benefit. The Marines at Peleliu might as well have been breaking rocks like the convicts of the day. Awful business. And so many families crushed by the loss of their loved ones. I guess things like Peleliu make me cranky. That's all.
No, that is probably a US Model 1919 air cooled machine gun on our normal 30-06 caliber. Americans would never use a German gun as the sound would let other Americans think he was a German, and they would shoot at hims.
14:59 Invasion of Palau Islands. The video is a totally superficial presentation for Home Front consumption. Source: History dot Com. " The Battle of Peleliu resulted in the highest casualty rate of any amphibious assault in American military history: Of the approximately 28,000 Marines and infantry troops involved, a full 40 percent of the Marines and soldiers that fought for the island died or were wounded, for a total of some 9,800 men (1,800 killed in action and 8,000 wounded). The high cost of the battle was later attributed to several factors, including typical Allied overconfidence in the efficacy of the pre-landing naval bombardment, a poor understanding of Peleliu’s unique terrain, and overconfidence on the part of Marine commanders, who refused to admit their need for support earlier on at Bloody Nose Ridge." Bypassing, Isolating and starving the island would take time and imagination. Bad generals should be shot.
I appreciate you taking your time from your duties as five star youtube general to explain how to run WWII newsreel footage. Had we had you in WWII I'm sure the battle of Palau would have been perfectly executed, I salute you General.
Arrogance cost lives. The Marine Corps General..... I think hung ho can go too far. Naval bombardment only went so far. Broke up command and control. I was Naval Air Crew. I am not trying to be hyper critical.
Also get rid of the Epoch Times ads. They talk a good story at times, but their sponsors do not really have America's interests in mind. Chinese sponsorship does not truly promote American interests. I wish I could meet that little twerp who does the ads in person. He is a sell out. My dad who was a WWII vet fought against his kind while he was overseas.
* units hastily thrown at that area were not expected to enter combat until 45 and were not issued winter equipment. They were in a lul after the 1st airborne army actions in holland. The Brits and Americans that were already in sustained operations had cold-weather gear.
That's how the quartermaster reported to the higher office. I got a 36 chest coat and I was never a 36 but had to try to ware it anyway until I found someone that had a 40 and they needed a 36!
