Camo : These only come in woodland camo from what I understand; if you see one in a different pattern it is likely a knock off.
Versions : Other militaries have updated designs of this pack such as the Indian army which features Molle all over the pack.
It should be mentioned that prototypes of these packs popup everyone once in a while including those which are OD and brown in color.
Measurements :
the main upper compartment is 20” x 14” x 8”
the lower is 10.5” x 14” x 10.5”
if the false bottom is opened the entire main compartment will measure 31” x 14” x 8”.
The one large right pocket measures 18” x 6” x 3.5” and the two smaller left pockets each measure at 9.5” x 6” x 3.5”.
History : The design of this pack came from a WWII USMC Jungle ruck and was released in the late 80's and was later discontinued at some point in the late 2000's with the last of these being made around 2008.
I have heard over the years that early versions of this pack were made by Low Alpine and all of them are known for having various problems especially with the frame and breakage. From what I have read, these were normally used by Recon, Rangers and Special Forces and that the Army decided that they were simply too big and bulky for regular use.
During the course of the CFP-90, the problems associated with the first versions were not correctly solved and some problems still passed on to the second models.

Bulletproof - Don’t let this term confuse you; every once in a while I’ll see some comment in regards to this term and for some reason there are some people who don’t understand it. It means strong, not literally bulletproof.

The biggest complaint I've heard about the genuine ones is the plastic piece that attaches to the sliding adjustment for shoulder strap height has been known to break.

@TheOutdoorGearReview I have found personally the CFP90 to be a bang for your buck. Mine, with the patrol pack on Ebay was about 100.00 altogether, and it was made by SDS. Pros: Huge room, comfortable, and finally durable. Cons: Quick Release Straps due tend to break, but you can replace those easily. Fringing is another problem with the fabric on the inside, but I found cindering it with a small pocket lighter on low flame trying to be careful not to burn the pack to melt the ends of the fabric is a easy life hack. Overall great pack, bought it for VA Defense Force, but due to fallout issue. Their loss and my gain. I think if you do your research, and finally get familiar with the CFP90? It can be very fun for backpacking, outdoors, and finally great for wilderness survival enthusiast. Possie play my song! On the harness breaking. I used the broken plate as a template and made one out of heavy duty leather. I sewed the straps between to heavy pieces of leather. It has never given me anymore problems and works better than the original plastic. And it's still adjustable like the original.

The plastic suspension piece is vulnerable when u lift it heavily loaded one shoulder strap at a time. Load it on the back both straps at the same time like a scuba tank and it will hold up. Also, don’t move the pack loaded one strap at a time be sure to use the grab handle. Take care of the bag and it will take care of you.

Yup, which is exactly how these were taught to be donned. Lay the pack on its back, top facing your feet, stick hands through straps and grab the sides of the pack, don it like a scuba tank. Great pack, been a while since I carried one. :)

I use to load my pack up completely full maxing the weight load. I sat down to put it on then rolled over to stand up with a bit of help. Lol As long as you are easy with it it wont rip out.

The first one I got that was already ripped Cut 2 pieces of sheet metal and sandwiched the plastic between the meatal and riveted it ROCK SOLID👍👍👍👍👍💯😁😁😁

Great review. I have one for 16 years it's an awesome backpack. I've put over 70 lbs. in mine and ruck marching over 12 miles in my younger years in the military.

This pack is a very good pack I own one and I believe I paid $75 to a $100 for it. Great review, I’m curious were you found all of the information for this pack. I tried to find as much information most I found and correct me if I’m wrong. It was a prototype before the military went to the Molle system. Over Memorial Day weekend I did a hike using this pack without the Day pack, I did 20 miles. Before I left I weighed it with all of my gear and it weighed 50lbs. One big issue I had was the top screw came loose on the plastic piece on the back of the pack. I didn’t lose the screw but I lost the backing to it. The way I noticed this was the change on how it carried on my back. Also one last note, you can adjust the pack to fit you. You adjust the shoulder straps by loosing the screws on the black piece and move it up and down to fit you comfortably. Also on the shoulder straps is another strap that you can pull tightly to bring the pack closer to you. Thank you for taking the time to read what I wrote. I hope it was helpful for others.

It wasn't really a prototype pack. It was more of a special service pack. It was originally designed for 10th Mountain. I got it while with EOD out of Ft Dix. Damn good pack. It is just so danged heavy. I prefer ALICE to this beast. I don't own the field pack, but I do have the patrol pack. Most people don't know what that square ugly backpack is, but I recognized it at the surplus store and snapped it up for $20.

I have one I was issued during trial testing in 92ish. They were never adopted by field units and I was still using a large ALICE when we went into Afghanistan after 9-11 (with the 10th Mountain). I didn't get a MOLLE ruck (which sucks in my opinion too) until 2005ish

Good versatile pack - I love my CFP90 when it's got just the basics, about 30 lbs of gear. I can carry 10 days of freeze dried food in it at very little extra weight. Good woodland bugout bag option.

It is a big pack, but you don't have to load it up with tons of weight. I like the idea of getting bigger bags to hold tents, tarps, jackets, sleeping bags, ect. That way you can pack up quicker and put less wear on stuff with insulation and fill up all the space at the same time. Carrying more lightweight food is a good idea too.

I have one I bought to replace the Alice as a 60mm mortar crewman. I loved it. Much more comfortable and carries more gear with easier access to your gear through multiple pockets and bottom zippers. etc. I used the pass through stow pockets for aiming stakes. I strapped the large round base plate on the back. My entire mortar section bought CPF 90 rucksacks and I think we all agreed thy made our load out easier to carry, especially rucking it for several klicks. The old Alice packs were uncomfortable beasts with our heavier weapon system. I did blow out the side stitching, or SOMEONE did when I packed the hard shelled mortar sight box inside and a dumbass PFC tossed it off the back of a 5 ton. I stitched it back up with some black heavy duty threading and it has held up very well.

I have one of those packs. It was issued to me while in the military along with the sleep system. I use it for an earthquake survival kit. I use the patrol bag as a bushcraft pack thanks to you and Dave C. and Corporal's corner and survival Lilly.

I still have the same pack when it was issued to me 20+ years ago, was a 13f, light infantry unit attached to heavy mech brigade, light pack was 110, heavy was 115. Glid/nightsight/radio/batteries, I was lucky enough to carry the saw too. Thing is a beast, aside from a couple buckle replacements its brand new. I have carried just under 100 pounds on multiple backpacking trips. I have never had an issue with the support system, but I have always put it on scuba gear style as well. The assault pack I have removed shoulder straps, and use as my food snack bag. Mostly do 7-10 mile destination camping for week or more with around 80. At 5'8" 180 thing is bigger then me most of the time, its not a ultralight pack for sure, but it will carry anything you put in it.

The adjustable shoulder straps are exactly why I bought the knockoff. Besides my shoulder straps being sewn directly to the pack everything else is the same. I even have the straps for mounting a patrol Peck. I use mine strictly for a winter pack. I'm like you, no way I'm going to carry 70 lb in any pack. These were designed mostly for a winter pack and carrying bulky clothing and the winter sleep system . Really enjoy the review and your Channel. Steven

Yeah, and the skis through the side-channels and the staves on front securing the tips through the 2 loops at the Botton, threading the staves through the Alice webbing that you want and the handles go through the bottom Alice webbing of the patrol pack if attached on top :)

back in the 70's I used to teach backpacking , etc etc at my college. I was lucky enough to purchase the Lowe Alpine Expedition pack. Time moved on , life got complicated, had to sell it, that thing was a garage to fill! So when I acquired this pack I was giddy. I thought I had read somewhere that Lowe developed the pack. Yes Lowe did . God that was rhe pack of packs. Had a picture of it. You might be able to Google the lowes alpine backpack. The picture has a grunt with bino's looking off a cliff with the backpack facing the viewer from the side. Great pack.

Yes it was ranger green or like the 1973 Alice packs, the patrol pack made up the lid and the bottom compartment was brown ... trial versions 1985-90

I have one of these big boys and love it. I also have a med Alice hellcat modified. Both amazing packs. For my pros on this pack, the size and the durability. Like you said it's bulletproof. Con, don't get carried away with how much you can get in it.

Me and my buddies bought some of these back in the mid 90's and went hiking and camping with them. They were tough as nails and we loaded them up. Love the pack and I highly recommend them.

Sorry for the late comments but I just stumbled on to this video. 70 lbs. isn't even getting close to the carrying capacity of that ruck. That pack and hauling 100+ lbs. up and down East Range and the Kawailoas in the early 90's is the reason I have three herniated disks in my back today. 25ID (L) started weighing ruck sacks during EDRE's and was startled to see how much weight guys were carrying with these and started transitioning back to medium ALICE packs. The reality was most people went back to privately purchased large ALICE packs but that was still less weight than we had been carrying. The mortar guys. 60 gunners, and RTOs were frequently carrying around 120 lbs. with the CFB-90 pack. The pack sucked without the sleep system or something to fill out that space. If not, the aluminum internal frame plates/rods would pop out because there wasn't enough tension to keep them in place.

Luke.... I have 02 CFP-90 With the Patrol Pack. Very Comfortable to wear(carry). Plenty of Room to carry your Gear including a Sleeping system section. It has A Radio pouch/Camelback pouch inside. The Harness is great the suspension is made inside instead having an outside hard harness. Adjustable shoulder mount to fit your back. Love it. To add punches got to clip it with Alice clips. Just wish it has Molle with it

The Molle will absolutely work! It's the other way around that can become a problem, metal Alice clips don't like pals webbing that much, but it the slots are wide enough you could use nylon straps, malice clips or go for the Spec Ops brand X-pouches that accepts both :)

Good and honest review. I’ve got one of these packs that I bought for $30 or $40 in 2014. It was in new condition and I’ve not had an issue with it yet. The heaviest I’ve loaded it was 40 pounds (18.2 kilos) for a 30 mile saunter, it handled that weight well. While it’s not waterproof it handled two days of ran and nothing inside got wet. I like it almost as well as my ALICE pack (the external frame of the ALICE is great).

Thats why you weigh everything! You want to strip all excess wieght down to minimum. In the Army we stripped things down to nothing. High speed low drag.

After seeing so many Ultra light super expensive gear geaks, it's kind of refreshing to see this. 8 lbs, cordura in a well made huge pack actually isn't bad considering that in the late 80's civilian packs were this heavy. I have a vintage Wilderness Experience 85L pack , Cordura. Weighs 6.3 lbs. In my late 40's I carried 45 to 50 lbs and hiked 80 miles in the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim. I'm female and was 61.5 inches tall and managed it just fine. That's too heavy for me now at age 77 and now 60" tall. I'm carry 36 lbs in a 29 oz pack for a month long "jaunt" on the John Muir Trail in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. 36 lbs is trail head weight. As I eat it will get lighter.

@@ronaldmagidson for various reasons I can't eat large meals. I dehydrated all my own meals to be nutritious, calorie dense and well balanced. I munched all day on trail mix, trail bars from a food co op, again high energy, good fuel. I was slow and because of my age, hiking solo the rangers kept an eye on me. At one point as my breakfast food was getting low a ranger called ahead to a construction crew to bring up extra food for me, mostly oat meal and trail bars, this augmented what I had and so I continued to eat well. I'm a small older woman so I'm limited in how much I can carry so I worked out my food to the gram and the calorie and to make it all fit in a bear vault as well, now some of the trail bear lockers had some hiker foods there for free which also augmented my supply. Right now I'm recovering from a broken hip (fell in my driveway) but the doc says I'll hike again in 3 months, maybe not with a heavy pack at first. I'll be 80 in a month.

I was issued this pack at Ft Bragg and was part of the airborne testing. It was just to hard to jump. So my Battalion just kept using the large alice pack.

Thanks for showing that pack. I think it is the a pack between ALICE packs and the "new" MOLLE systems. I used to use one for longer hikes. The pack is very comfortable to carry even with higher load. I liked the design of the pack, pockets, webbing and especially the fact that you stick longer gear behind the side pockets and have it secured although. The downside is really the plastic of the harness. I riped it off during a training with ~20 kg /liter water bottles in it.

I like mine better than all other military packs I own. Makes a great winter pack ! I am a big guy and require a big sleeping bag, this is one of the few packs I can fit my bag, and larger items in as well. Side pouches are not removable, but so what. I also like the interior pockets. This pack is sooo very comfortable to me, I can walk farther without pain with this pack. Great for bigger guys, and winter camping !

I picked one up on Facebook marketplace about a month ago for $75 and it looks brand new, dated 2001 and made by SDS. I needed a pack to haul 2 days worth of gear for an airsoft event, and my choices were my large alice and the CFP-90. It was a mile hike one way to my team’s base on semi-rough terrain. I had about 60-70 lbs of gear packed in the CFP-90. The distance may not seem like much, but for a guy that isn’t in the best of shape, I felt like the pack did an excellent job carrying all my gear, and I didn’t really feel uncomfortable under the weight of the pack either. On the front I added 2 Molle sustainment pouches, and in the middle had room for a 1 quart canteen pouch and Alice 3 mag pouch. I also found that the the later Molle 2 patrol pack can clip into the CFP-90 if desired. Aware of the flaws with this pack, I’m going to try to baby it as best as I can, as I want to keep it nice. It fits nicely in my collection between my Alice and Molle packs.

Had one of these bad boys BACK IN THE DAY. I enjoyed it, wish I still had it. We still used the vietnam era ALICE mag pouches, those can be easily placed on the back instead of the assault pack. For Easy access to gear/ammo. Over time the side pockets and the top draw string all busted. Turned it in for a newer one years ago. Good bag overall!

This pack did not get the recoriition it deserved, I completely missed,( got my hands on the med and large Alice ) I would find many pieces of the patrol pack,and was clueless as to what it went to. Many yard sales and flea markets, I picked many med and large Alice packs,and used them for 30 plus yrs.last year I came across the British and Dutch military rucks, and was so impressed,I got 2 of each, long back and short back, I tell you military equipment is bombproof. Am 64, 100% disabled, I have slowed down a lot, but still get out there .thanks, Maine Bearhunter5.

Plastic harness broke on mine. I measured the placement of the strap top for me and had it sewn there. Since then it has become my go-to pack for all size loads. For small loads it compresses well. Very durable and versatile.

Having used one of these for several years while in the Army, the were not capable of continuously carrying the loads that Infantry Soldiers were carrying. Stitching, and buckle issues were a challenges as well as the plastic piece that connected the should straps to the sizing rail. But I still used it for many years camping with my sons scout troop and it served me well.

Sir... This pack was mfg in 3 COLOR- DESERT , with black buckles ( U.S. mfg) , and was made for a VERY brief period before 9/11. It is highly desirable due to its limited production. It was made by the same company that mfg the woodland pack. It's production was less than 60 days. You can contact the company and they will verify. It mainly went to 3rd SFG in Bragg.

I have a genuine CFP-90 2nd Gen, Medium/Large Alice Packs, I prefer the CFP in almost every situation involving travel and storage. It holds up well despite the harness system already being broken and falling apart but everything else is still going strong.

Just picked one with the patrol pack at a Surplus store today that was going out of business. Good to excellent condition and I paid $130 for it. Back in 1991 I was in a light infantry unit in the ROK that had a COHORT transition from a Unit that had formerly been at Ft. Ord. They had also been part of the Panama Response and had been issued this ruck as part of their gear. Everyone I had talked to about it hated the bleeping thing. They called it the “Refrigerator Ruck” and stated their unit chain of command had caused it to be over loaded because of it’s carrying capacity where they were consistently carrying more than 70 pounds each with it. Hopefully I will never have to use it. I still have my original private purchased large Alice for the very infrequent big loads and long trips that I may be forced to take. But it will have a home in the collection from someone that appreciates it Service history.

Picked one up, brand new from Mcquires Army Navy out of New Jersey in February, 170 bucks , with the patrol pack. Just looked and they dont even have a listing anymore, its an awesome pack. Been hoping Luke would review it !!!

This is my main GHB/INCH bag. I constantly have to make sure i don’t over pack it because it is easy to do. I do have the attachable patrol pack but i don’t like it except for the extra room. I have a molle ii patrol pack,with sustainment pouches, attached to the CFP-90. I have added two straps to the CFP-90 to make it work. The molle ii is more comfortable to wear. I do carry the MSS and a TCOP in the main body with plenty of room for items.

I was issued one of these back in the mid-'90's as a test/evaluation piece for my unit and I still have it and the patrol bag. Great duffel bag. Worst backpack for patrols. I found when they are loaded down, there is a tendency for the pack to 'sway' left to right on your back as you force-march (walking speed at or above 4-mph). This is due to the 'internal frame' style design (hence, the MOLLE system went back to an external frame). Another problem is just the overall size. With all that room, someone in your chain-of-command will tend to want to fill it up, which adds unnecessary weight. I believe they were primarily used for extreme cold weather/mountain operations, since snivel gear tends to be bulky. But, again, an excellent duffel bag!

Dont forget a pack cover to don over this pack There are several available like winter white! Whole kits are available. If multicam, there are up to 50/60 liter pack covers ...aka tire covers for civilians

I own this pack and got it 5, or 6 years ago from a guard unit. All new with nsn#s Like others have said the YOKE is the weak link, so always use the GRAB HANDLE and not one of the shoulder straps. It is as big as a duffle bag when I set it next to mine. Instead of the assault pack, i use the woodland molle assault pack and it has all the attachments as this pack Great addition with all 3 strapped together The issued assault pack is great for maps and manuals for SHTF, stuff, while the molle woodland camo assault pack is the preferred pack for short hikes from a base camp. Like he said, it holds a lot of stuff. Skis and poles were used in back of the side bags for mountain units. As well as munitions like rockets.

I have one of these along with the patrol pack that I set up as my primary bug out bag. I got lucky the other day and stumbled in Toyota Red Sail that had two of these in great shape but I picked up for $15 a piece. I'm figuring on using one as my hunting hack for being able to pack out meat. And the other one, I will probably use for my bug in kit in my pickup.

I used this pack while stationed in Italy in my Airborne unit. It was the original version in OD and Flat dark Brown made by Alpine Lowe. I thought it was a great pack. We did not get to use them often. It was determined that it was too difficult to jump with (only what I was told). often times our Mortar Maggots used it because they could carry more ammo and equip with it than the Large Alice. It was a great pack for Cold Weather Training in the Italian Alps as well. Only advantage that I noticed though was some more modern organization options, Patrol Pack addition, and more comfortable depending on who was using it. No giant leaps over the Large Alice in my opinion but I am an old grunt who loved their Large Alice and never had a complaint.

Yes, the Rothco knock-off buckles are not compatible with the Fastex Nexus ones, so a G.I. plus patrol pack won't click with the Issue GI ruck, and they are made of 1200d Polyester which is way too heavy duty, yet not as strong as nylon. There are also a way of attaching the straps from the patrol pack or even the enhanced Alice shoulder straps in case the yoke should break. So you don't have to ditch your big pack in the middle of a mission, but with some field-expedient tricks make it back to base ;)

Packs like that are why so many soldiers end up with bad knees and feet. It brings back memories of sore knees and feet when I had to carry a Molle 2 system. Glad I did it, but I don't miss being a human mule. Makes me grateful for my trail runners and 8 lb base weight I tote now.

Have the French army pack this size in CCE, Huge internal metal frame and adj pad looks more sturdy from yours. .waist belt very comfortable. Large side compartments non detach. Even came w/ rainfly cover. From keepshooting , good price point. Of course ,sold out quick. Ordered the Alpine same purchase & got a good one luckily. Similar but smaller. Both put the weight just right once you adj to body. Only seen 2 other reviews on these. Good kit!

I was given this pack by my dad. I haven't had an issue with the mount for the straps, but it's good to know that there are some known possible issues. I think it would be pretty easy to fabricate a new plate out of something else like metal if it does break. It would be a waste of a good pack to just toss it.

Just give you update I have had that pack at 110 lbs. Carried motars in it. Also a con is metallic backing has at times pop out and could hurt you. However, that only happens when we were tossing of the trucks and side of the mountain.

I was issued one of these back in the day, yes they were big and could fit all the gear, but they were uncomfortable, and they broke very easily along the plastic parts around the harness.

The one I got the piece of junk plastic on the center of the shoulder straps was broken. I cut 2 pieces of sheet metal and riveted one on each side 😁👍👍👍👍👍 ROCK SOLID NOW 😁😁💯💯💯💯

It’s a very good rucksack, I used it for several years in long treks. The most weak part is the plastic suspenders conjunction. I’d like find it again but it’s not so common in Europe

Thats so cool you did the review of the CFP-90!! My best friend and hiking buddy uses this pack for our big camp trips. He loves it! This pack is a monster though! Hes a big guy too though at 6'2" 280 pounds. Hes been using it for years mainly because he still uses the big 3 piece MSS sleep system and Gen-1 gortex rain suit. It all fits in there with the rest of his gear pretty well. I'm trying to get him to try out my Granite Gear "Chief" Patrol pack in AOR-2 digital camo. Its very similar in size but the Chief is a whisker smaller and definitely lighter and more comfortable but its also a bit more involved too. I would like to see you do a review on the Granite Gear Chief Patrol pack in "Multicam" if you can get your hands on one?. You probably already own one lol? If not they do sell them occationally on ebay and i think they still sell them on Granite Gears website under their tactical section. They have a smaller tactical pack too i would love to see a review on its kinda like a fast pack or 3 day assault pack. They claim the Chief though is the lightest patrol pack of its size ever made and it was the most expensive military pack ever made when it first came out. Thanks for the review man!! Hike on!!

Used one of those (original) for years and loved it until the harness broke (as you described). It was useless after that. Overall it was a great pack !! Worth buying if you're young enough to carry all that weight :-)
