Combat Mission Cold War: Last Stand At Rumpenheim

A US Army Cavalry troop mounts a defense against all odds to stop a Soviet Motorrifle Batallion from crossing the river Main, as the Cold War has gone hot in this somewhat overly dramatic after action video report.
This video is part two in a series of two videos about the Combat Mission Cold War scenario "Rumpenheim Rumpus". In my previous video, I played the Soviet side against ‪@MegalonJonesSlattery‬ and drove the Americans out of this little German town. In this video, the roles are reversed - will the US Army be able to stem the tide this time?

I suppose you could call that a Pyrrhic victory for the Soviets?
@PitterPatter20
@PitterPatter20 8 месяцев назад
@Planefan1000 Kind of? Soviet doctrine was okay with losing entire battalions as long as the objective was achieved and follow-on forces could continue exploitation. On the very likely nuclear battlefield of WW3 you have to incorporate the fact entire formations will cease to exist into your doctrine, so the Soviets didn't really care about tactical outcomes as long as the larger operational outcomes were going in their favor.

Wow, what a game! Well played, you did incredibly well considering the odds and a string of back luck, inflicting way greater losses on the attacker than game 1! I don't think we got to see the end screen in the first video but it's clear that the Russian force in game 2 was in much better shape to continue operating compared to game 1 so I'd count that as a win overall. IMO 30 minutes isn't a "long" video, and it was so good and action packed that it went by in a flash, so please don't feel the need to do shorter videos on our behalf as the audience, but I understand that they are a lot of work and that you are not able to make infinitely long videos haha! Can't wait for the next one, these videos truly are a cut above the rest!
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky 2 года назад
Thanks! My thinking about "long" is that some people may feel they don't have the time to click a 30 minute video - but you're right, it should be more about what you pack into those 30 minutes 😊.
@sproge2142
@sproge2142 2 года назад
@@FreeWhisky honestly, with your target audience, 30 minutes is nothing. In the crowd I know we follow Combat Mission channels religiosity and we make time to watch it as it comes out, people either save it to a Playlist or just makes it a point to come back and watch it when they can sit down and focus entirely on the video. I obviously don't have your analytics but I would bet money on there being fewer impulse clicks from the recommended feed than usual, I'd guess you have a smaller but more "loyal" viewer base than average with the same people continuing to watch your videos as you release them. And if all of this actually matches up with your analytics then I'd say you're safe making your videos any length at all, and if you want an example take a peek at Usually Hapless's channel, there's almost a direct correlation between video length and how many views it gets, with his most viewed videos generally being his longest! Either way, don't feel pressured to do anything you don't want to do, having fun making videos is ten times more important than anything else! ❤️

Love this! And this is fine. This is a classic example of a phyric victory. Especially since in real life I imagine you would have withdrawn and saved a lot of men and ATGM platforms, and repeated this somewhere else, rather than staying and dying to the last man to fulfil an arbitrary victory criteria. If you had withdrawn, the loss ratio would have been insane. In the opening weeks of WW3, that's the best you can hope for, and inflicting huge attrition while surviving would count as victory.
@FreeWhisky

Funny you should mention it; while playing I thought after the first wave "realisticly I would fire my remaining TOW's at the second wave and then bugger off before they come ashore." Ah, the restrictions of games... did make for a dramatic battle though 😉

These videos don't need to be shorter but longer! Another great battle and interesting how I expected it to be another similar defensive tactics as the last one but it played out very differently. Still seems one sided if the soviets could afford only 2 battalions of infantry in bmps then I think it would be more even and slower for the soviet player to decide what to do and when. It would be interesting if the battle was 20-30 minutes longer in that case and see if it made the soviet player attack at a slower pace rather than swarm. Although the battle seems to play as realistic to what the russians do even now so it is no surprise that they took the town on both occasions regardless of the tactics used. Keep the videos coming top quality work.
@FreeWhisky

Pyrrhus lost the war by winning battle, a pyrrhic victory is a victory on the tactical level but a defeat on the strategic one. The minor victory is well earned, the senario itself does not expect the american player to win the battle, but to cause enough casualties on the soviet to make it feel like a loss on your ennemy even if they won.

Stellar video. I'd add one extra voice in favour of 'imbalanced' scenarios if they add to the realism of the situation. Thanks! Which one are you looking to pick up? When you play, don't forget to bring the camera down to ground level every other turn or so - it's easy to stay in birds eye view and just play from there, but you'll miss all the good drama that I use to make the video more interresting 😊
@Rimasta1

@@FreeWhisky All 3 on steam have my interests. I noticed even when on sale though they aren’t the cheapest games and then I read a number of reviews saying there are only a few scenarios and that even with a good computer the game doesn’t run smoothly. One review said there was a delay when he’d give orders making giving orders to all his units take around half an hour. Is this typical for the game or did you have a different experience with the games? I don’t mind spending the money as long as the game works ok but some of the reviews made me hesitant to pick them up and take a chance with that price tag.

@@Rimasta1 well I could answer those questions (I think the amount of campaigns/scenarios/quick battle maps is fine)z but why don't you go to the battlefront website and download a demo? There's demo's for every title except Cold War, for some reason. But you can check performance etc with any of the demos.

Fantastic stuff! Your videos just keep on getting better from an already high standard. The 3D map was really cool (how was it made?), and the use of music was very emotional, especially the sad part toward the end. Netflix next?
@FreeWhisky

The 3D map was made using Sketchup! I usually use that when I plan projects around the house but when I found out it has a "monochrome monitor" style setting, I knew I had to use it for CMCW 😁

An absolutely awful, horrific and terrible defense that you should be tremendously proud of! The play and decision of taking each fight as an individual piecemeal engagement, instead of the entire battle at once, really put in perspective the engagements of each unit, and just how awfully outnumbered and outgunned the US forces are. I really enjoyed the series of gradual retreats and impromptu resistance nests; this clearly worked better for the US here than some mass retreat with intention to entrench. Very good! Can’t wait to see more!
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky 2 года назад
Thanks! Altough I suppose that you could see the battle as a mass retreat after the bridgehead was formed, with the exception of the unlucky stranded M60's 😁

Great AAR and narrative - I found this entertaining in a world of usually dry CM videos. 10/10 and Subscribed! Have some whisky on me for your efforts sir. As a suggestion, I realize you've now played this scenario from both sides and are sick of it, but I would be interested to see the later US Army with 2x PLTs of Abrams and Cav Scouts on Bradleys go up against the same Soviet Assault force. At any rate, keep up the great content!
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky Год назад
Thanks! I would think that the infra red thermal sights would make that a one sided slaugher. Just smoke the river banks up and no Soviet can you while you pick them off through the smoke... You can easily change the scenario and try this in single player, if you're looking for a power trip 😉

Realisticly I would have withdrawn them when the 2nd wave was starting to establish a bridge head, that way 95% would have survived as heroes and the Soviets would have been forced to perform an echolon change, but that's the way computer games go 😁.

CM is one of the few games where imbalanced games are still fun, or can even be more fun than balanced ones. Saying that, I think that with M60A3 TTS instead of M60A1s and M901s instead of M150s you might have had enough firepower to win. When I played this I wanted nothing more than thermal sights on my M60s to be able to shoot through all that damned smoke!
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky 2 года назад
Yes, that would have been a huge difference.... Can't say why the US player then wouldn't just smoke his own side of the river, come out and start the turkey shoot 😁. So maybe for gameplay just two of the eight tanks as M60A3 TTS? 🤨

This is a very cool scenario to watch, though I'm not certain a town this important would be defended by effectively a rump company of support assets. Though there's no west german army in CMCW that would have likely provided as many infantry as they could spare to keep hannovers flank clear

Yeah I was zooming around with the camera and noticed that hole there... no idea what it's for as it's not the tracker sight (that's a few inches to the left) but I thought I'd use it as such anyways! The graphics were surprisingly easy. I found out that Sketchup has a setting to look like a monochrome monitor and putting down some cubes where the houses are with that program was a breeze.

This is an un winnable battle for the US, but it doesn't need to be a win. This is a battle where you have to look past it, look at the bigger picture. You absolutely decimated a tank company, obliterated a huge number of IFV's, and with those, many squads of infantry. This is more than giving the soviets a bloody nose, this is a broken leg. They wouldn't have the forces to push on for a good while. It would have slowed their advance down tremendously while they waited for resupply, maintenance and medical before they could move on allowing for Nato forces to dig in and prepare further back. Nato forces that would be fresh and in good numbers and supply since you made the Soviets fight for every inch with very few forces. That in itself is an impressive victory. Also, they town would now he open to being pulverized by Nato arty and air.
