Combat Mission Cold War: Ivan's Expendable Bastards

The cold war gets bloody as I lead the Soviet army in a large scale assault on the American defenders, commanded by Megalon Jones. This battle is a rematch after our first one, which can be watched here: • Combat Mission Cold Wa... .
Fun fact: the enemy AT team that I was chasing at 5:20 was actually never there. Megalon Jones later explained that the ATGM missiles that I believed to have been from a moving AT infantry team were in fact coming from a TOW vehicle much further away. I believed that I had chased them into the artillery zone as my searching platoon had come all the way up to there without finding them... The fog of war in this game is real.

I honestly thought that BMP with the wrong orders @21:00 was just a very aggressive recon to figure out what I had on the other side of the hill. Those RPG teams that halted my counterattack are due for commendation and promotion. I was ready to finally get rid of the BMP force on overwatch and withdraw my infantry platoon. Losing those two M60's made me sacrifice my infantry to your arty (is it better to run and get machine gunned by the BMP's or sit in cover for the inevitable arty strike?) Good job!
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky 2 года назад
I figured that it would look like that, and I was a bit embarassed because it looked like I was trolling... But the Dukes of Hazzard bit that I got out of it made it worth it! At least one of the RPG teams is getting a promotion; corporal Ratnikov has left a position open. You basicly wrestled the initiative from my hands within five minutes after we first made contact and every time I thought I had regained it, you slapped it from my hands again. It was enjoyable in a very masochistic way - good job to you too!

The spotting in this game is exactly the reason why I couldn't bring myself to finish any of the campaigns. It's so god damn frustrating when an enemy tank is shooting from the edge of a forest and none of your units can spot it because it has ONE tree trunk in front of it. But wait, there is one unit that can spot it, and that is an infantry conscript squad that is riding at the back of an bmp that is going as fast as it can on a bumpy terrain while taking fire. I don't know how that works.. Spotters, atgm's and tanks in a shouting distance from each other can't see an enemy tank at the edge of a forest (even though they clearly have a line of sight) but some random infantry squad at the back of a moving death box somehow can spot it without any problems.
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky 2 года назад
It's a mixed blessing, I suppose. On one hand the spotting system is a big part of what brings tension to the game, on the other it can indeed produce awkward situations. At least when going H2H both players suffer from it somewhat equally.
@DieGrotsky
@DieGrotsky Год назад
It a good system most of the time but it has been proven to produce significant outliers, that more commonly affect the Soviets in this title. There is a weird defensiveness on the forums when people bring up frustrations about spotting which is a shame, because these situations can make an otherwise engaging game feel senseless and frustrating. You can really see this in Usually Hapless' Death Ride video, where at one point T-62s fail to spot, among others, a vehicle in between itself and the target its aiming at, blocking the shot. I think anything blocking LOS to spotted target should be auto-spotted, and also that units must get a bonus to spotting enemies which have engaged nearby allies.

I've toyed with the idea of a war movie based on a Combat Mission scenario (and CMCW would be the perfect title to pick for this). Play a scenario (there are plenty of movies that take place over a single battle or engagement), and then focus the movie around a platoon, squad, or individual soldier that you think had an interesting story play out over the course of the mission. It could make for a concise 90 minute movie with lots of action and interesting character drama (the events would be dictated by the course of the scenario, but the writers would have total liberty to create personalities and dailogue for the characters). Unfortunately I'm not a filmmaker, so I'm not the one who will make it happen. But I still think it's a good idea. It would feel so authentic. The events depicted would feel real and dynamic in ways that no movie about completely fictional battles ever seems to manage, while at the same time allowing a broader audience to vicariously experience a war that never happened through the eyes of characters they can identify with.

@@gareththompson2708 I came up with an entire beginning in middle and end in a combat mission version. One battle made by one of our brilliant community scenario makers. It was a three-part battle and I found that one platoon that I held in reserve had an interesting story. Arc over the three rounds played. They were the only intact platoon left at the end and so they were used for the final assault on the enemy stronghold. I was able to create an entire story in my mind that they were young trainees fresh out of school and that they were kept at the very end and earned their veteran status in blood. Oh it was so beautiful!

Bit late as usual from me 😉 Another fantastic vid, good job on keeping the same great quality as game 1! (no offense intended below, I don't mean it as criticism to you but as criticism of CM:Cold War.) Guess we have another example to file under "Soviet tactics doesn't work in CM", won't stop people from finding some way to say that it wasn't executed correctly the next time we talk about it though. 🙄 It's honestly frustrating to see video after video of very capable players executing good soviet style attacks and getting punished for it, I've still yet to see a single video of it working from the people who keeps blaming the players and saying that it works 'if executed correctly'. Right now it forces the Soviet player to play like he would a Nato force, only less capable in most ways. I really wish they'd decrease the inherent capability difference in soft factors like spotting etc, to give soviet tactics a chance to work, right now just a few US tanks are able to stop any kind of soviet tank push, and add onto that all the atgms etc... Oh well, at least you were able to get a draw, that's damn impressive considering your initial losses and the strenght of the opposition. This scenario must have had a relatively small point difference when building your forces, your opponent had a much larger force than I expected, so getting a draw seems like a huge win to me! 👍 Keep up the good work, can't wait for the next one!
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky 2 года назад
Hah, almost didn't catch the sarcasm on the late comment 😉. Looking back I think that maybe I should not have let the batallion take shelter when they couldn't spot the M60 that was killing them, but I should have gone forward with all six remaining tanks on a hunt command instead, to see the doctrine through to the bitter end if need be. Anyways, you're probably right that applying the Soviet doctrine puts the red player at a disadvantage at the moment... but it's a hell of a ride anyways 😉
@sproge2142
@sproge2142 2 года назад
@@FreeWhisky Oh no sarcasm, I'm a day late aren't I? Such late comments often get missed, but you seem on the ball, reading all and any! 😄Anyhow, you're right that not being able to spot is the major issue, just as in real life tank duels whomever spots first usually wins, the problem is that in this game the soviets' are so bad at spotting that they can't spot the shooter after he fires to kill the first tank, letting him just continue shooting and making the number of Red tanks irrelevant as he picks them off one by one. But the frustrating part is people swearing up and down that soviet tactics work without any one of them being able to show it! 🤣 But hey, as you say, at least we get to look at the pretty explosions! It's a shame the game doesn't show the turrets turning into helicopters and flying away!!! Thanks for the great content! 👍❤👍

Great video!! I don't have any way to play the modern games (only played CMBO, CMBB, & CMAK). But for the hill where you lost those 2 BMPs trying to spot the enemy line, I recommend taking a squad, splitting it and having then edge to the lip of it. They can help spot enemy units for shoot n scoots by tanks, bmps, and for arty strikes. Should help you keep your units safe.

You fell into the classic mistake of assuming the enemy has deployed closer to you than he really has. That assumption had a knock on effect that ruined your entire plan, like a string of dominoes falling over. Also, just some advice from a very old Combat Mission vet: Always start with Plan D and work backwards. The enemy will never expect Plan D to come first.
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky Год назад
I agree with the first statement, but I'd argue it only started going wrong when I stopped because of two tanks. Starting with Plan D is certainly the more unexpected option, I agree on that!

Turn based, as it's the only way for me to replay the action and capture it.

I'm sure there's a sonnet somewhere in there, waiting to be discovered 😉

Agreed, depending on what Cobras he brought that could have been very expensive. Air assets are a bit of russian roulette in CM, imo.

It's an attack map and it's called "Hills Rough Water (2512 x 1616) 097 Attack". Inspiring name, I know. Comes with the game.
