There could never be another series like this that could be made without CGI. Back then everything had to be acted with studio scenery etc. Amazing series. Cudos to those that were in this series. Just Brilliant.
COMBAT! is the greatest war show, TV or cinema, ever produced. The actors are superb, the direction fantastic! Thanks to Duke, for making these epic episodes available for us to enjoy! 😎👍🏼
Amazing how brave Doc is. He is considered a non combatant, yet in some shows he had to deal with life threatening situations, he did so with as much bravery as even Saunders but without a weapon. He is loyal and a decent human being who would rather heal than kill, yet he knows that sometimes war is the only answer when an enemy is unreasonable. The Germans(Nazi's) were about as unreasonable as a person can be! I noticed at times even Saunders defers to Doc's homegrown wisdom. He knows Doc is as rock solid and no braver man is in his squad.
I can tell you from my time, its a shit job. Most of the time you cant help patients, except for pretending you're cool as a cucumber and no matter what, you insist its not that bad. Its heartbreaking
Dennis Weaver was a Navy F4U Corsair fighter pilot during WW 2. He later portrayed a USN staff officer who becomes a fighter pilot in the Admiral William Halsey biopic starring James Cagney, "The Gallant Hours". He became a vegetarian in 1955 and was a great believer in renewable energy.
"By the rude bridge that arched the flood, Their flag to April's breeze unfurled, Here once the embattled farmers stood, And fired the shot heard round the world." --"Concord Hymn" Ralph Waldo Emerson
I have watched Combat series front to back about 3 times now because I missed it in the 60s. I was around then just didn't watch Combat much back then. i am a combat vet from Vietnam in 67-68 so I know what they went through. After watching these episodes today Io have become somewhat close to these guys. Almost all, if not all, are dead now. Rick killed himself, Vic was killed in a movie stunt by a helicopter. Others just died of old age. The last I heard Doc was flying charter planes somewhere enjoying himself. not sure about that though. And no Russia could not have won this war without the US. We provided planes, trucks and tanks to the Russians and they were fighting only on the Eastern Front. The US and our allies were fighting Nazis on the western front. Nazis were not an easy enemy to push back and they also murdered US POWs. They were an evil group of soldiers, not all, but most were die hard Nazis. God bless the US soldiers that gave everything fighting Nazis in Europe.
I had no idea how the leads died. I’m not that old but my dad got me into the show and I’ve been watching them again here recently. We binged it awhile back. I hate to hear that Rick Jason killed himself. I’ll assume Rick Morrow died doing what he loved
I am about like you, Jerry - missed it on the first time through, Vietnam 1966. And here it is 55 years later, and Agent Orange is taking it's toll. It is good to see how the "Greatest Generation" overcame, mostly, the evils of that period. Today those evils are a good bit more insidious, and watching Hanley and the squad face a more visible enemy. Gives us hope for the future, I think. Good program, overall.
When I was growing up, I liked Burke's Law, The Saint, Star Trek, The Avengers (I had a crush on Diana Rigg), The Persuaders. BUT I LOVED COMBAT! And then I became Flight Lieutenant with a squad of 4 helicopter gunships and 16 men (well, boys actually - wasn't any one over 22). You sure learn to Man Up, then. *Or die trying!*
As a sergeant, I was always glad to get recruits with country accents. Farmboys made great soldiers. From an early age, they've had to work hard and understood what it meant to be part of a team.
JF: Agreed. I was USMC active duty 73 > 82, many (not most) of the "city guys" were not nearly as proficient as the "country boys" in field exercises. Don't even get me started on Land Navigation.
I was a 1st Petty Officer in the Navy. Growing up in a Farming community I always like getting farmboys in the Division. the ones from the big cities were too coarse in there behavior. Got me tick off at them more times than I can remember.
Combat was/is good on so many levels because the narratives frequently divert from combat. There's always a human interest story - on both sides of the conflict. The brilliance of the writers is that each week they had a different story to tell.
My husband grew up on a dairy farm, the youngest of 8 kids. His dad's cows were treated better than all the kids. They all lived in a 3 bedroom house with no indoor plumbing. The milking parlor had 😅hot water piped on and classical music played on a stereo.
I remember the guy who plays the old man in the garden on one of the Star Trek TOS episodes called the Deadly Years. Always neat to see these characters from other shows. Loved Vic Morrow on the one Bonanza episode he played on.
The old guy was Felix Locher (pronounced as Lo-shay). Born in Switzerland. He is the father of John Hall, an actor who played several roles, including Ramar of the Jungle. They are now both buried together in Los Angeles. RIP guys. You will live forever on film.
I wonder why these actors liked to have their dogtags outside of their shirts so much. Bright shiny, tinkly objects. As a Navy aircraft mech I kept mine taped together with electrical tape and in a pants pocket so they would not catch on or come in contact with equipment ot should not. However, I realize this was just a tv show back when I was a teenager before the VN war.
Real men had hair on their chest and the tag chains would get tangled up and rip the hair out of your chest. LOL. The Army was required to were around the neck at all times.

In a less than one hour show you've got to figure what happened. The wounded German soldier got to a squad and told them what had happened. They set up a barrage in the area where the Americans might be. They had enough time to set up a mg nest for any Americans that might come by the farm area. One American soldier was killed in the barrage. Little John was not the brightest soldier but he was there on the front line. Sometimes it takes all kinds to win a war.
The digging of the trenches reminded me of the name "one man utility trench" The sergeant I knew said that it was not a foxhole and that a foxhole was underneath a foxes tail.
Dennis Weaver, Marshall McCloud. Which rotated with Columbo and Banecek in the NBC Sunday Mystery movie. Dennis also starred in Steven Spielburgh's first movie I believe, which as a ABC made for TV movie called ' the Duel'.
That was the 20 ft rule when attacking armed opponents. If you carry, be cognizant of that ! Also, that kraut MG nest...these guys should have been able to pick off the krauts, since many were exposed from the chest up. Come on.... one shot -one kill. You can do it !!!
I don’t know it it’s true or not, but the camo cover on Saunders helmet was from his brother’s ParaMarine’ parachute. m.imdb.com/title/tt0055666/trivia
Kirby was the most judgmental of all the squad, always ready to blame, but in the end, he turned out OK, just a show on emotions at a time when they were high!
the old man ( farmer ) looks like one of the survivors in the sci-fi ( tos ) pilot " Star Trek " the " Menagerie " aka " The Cage " later with Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy . the old man played one of the scientist .
''HIS EVER CHANGING DIRT'' Although He'd said - I Change Not ! Still: every living thing & it's seed Comes from & returns back into ''HIS EVER CHANGING DIRT'' Yet: in between those 2 times Are they not fashioned by His Will, His Light, & His Life Giving Waters ? -U.S. Paratrooper Sgt William 'Rock' Gilpin 82nd Abn Div.1/504 back in '74.
Caje carries his rifle as if he is left handed so does Kirby. Bar is not really a direct aim weapon. But it can be if held stable. A real one would kick Kirby all over the place.
+Arthur Johnson Caje and Kirby are both left handed. I've also seen some "replacements" during the series which are left handed at well. It's nice for us to be represented, in this right handed world.
About the beaver tails on german soldiers belts in the Combat! TV show. I suspect it is a sort of pouch for carrying a few small items like spare socks or gloves and maybe other small lightweight things. In one episode a guy had one that seemed stuffed with something soft, perhaps a clean shirt or shorts. Some military historian probably could probably tell you.

Combat, was a very good program but Littlejohn, made it look so out of place with his slow antics, he really threw tthe enjoyment of the show off he should have been taken out of the show from his very first appearance always something about him very annoying.
