I have been doing TCC for years but have never seen these applications you demonstrate. So thank you, Chinese masters are too secretive focus on the pretty . You have been lucky having a good teacher who showed you well.

I have just the one question..to all of you on the web; do you feel or see their punch ?. I can do the moves, but I want to know HOW you all seem to anticipate it... what am I missing ?.

You need to develop "Eagle Eyes", or "Eagle Vision", which is to see globally, noticing the slightest movements of your surroundings. Here is a description.... www.martialarts-london.co.uk/martial-arts-articles/eagle-vision.html
@ShaolinArtsAZ
@ShaolinArtsAZ 3 года назад
Hi Bob, the ability to respond to an incoming strike relies on the ability to read your opponent’s body. Based on their stance and position, there will be a limited number of ways they can strike - or at least strike with any power.
@eBueno331

Use peripheral vision to contemplate the shoulders-head triangle. If the opponent doesn't move, you remain still. If he/she moves slightly, you move first.

For me, my ability to feel or see their punch came from countless sparring sessions over a period of years. Because it’s Tai Chi, it seems mystical, but the truth is that anyone that has trained and fought in a lot of matches can do it.

How did you actually test this in a fight? Were you a correctional officer who had many encounters, or did you test under similar conditions. I knew two persons who had extensive real world experience. Both believed, based on experience and observations that chin na was extremely unlikely to work unless the attacker was already subdued or was cooperating. Against an adrenalized, wild, attacker the odds of chin na succeeding are about the same as catching a fly with chopsticks, no matter how skilled at chin na you are. That was their opinion and it seems far more reasonable to me than yours.

@VictorVenning

I learned that a particular joint lock as a part of two other systems rather than Tai Chi. Also, I don't love his application. In fairness, like a lot a Tai Chi Chaun, you can't demonstrate w/o injuring your partner (Tai Chi has a lot of good eye stab/gouge techniques, for example.) But kudos on the attempt, all the same.

The term is "Chin Na" or "Qin Na" ( 擒拿 ).Tai Chi Chuan is a SOFT (Internal) art, nothing 'hard (external) about it. Just trying to help..............
@ShaolinArtsAZ
@ShaolinArtsAZ 3 года назад
Thank you for bringing the error in spelling to our attention! I will talk to our editorial folks and have that fixed. Regarding Tai Chi Chuan (more properly Taijiquan) being only soft or internal, I believe that is a fundamental misunderstanding of the art. Taijiquan (太极拳) literally means grand ultimate FIST. The last character is commonly used for “boxing”. The internal aspect of Taijiquan indicates the source of the energy that is from the core (internal) not kinetic energy from the muscles (external). Regarding hard vs soft, Taijiquan is frequently characterized as “iron wrapped in silk”. It is soft and flowing until the energy is released, at which point the iron (hard) becomes very apparent. Taijiquan, if practiced without the hard or external aspect is merely a qigong focused on moving the internal energy. Thank you for your respectful comments!!

@@ShaolinArtsAZTai Chi Chaun never tenses the muscles, even when striking. A strike in Tai Chi Chuan is delivered with a soft, fluid hand or foot, allowing the chi to emanate from the Lao Gong (hand) or Yongquan (foot) points. This allows Tai Chi Chuan to create internal organ, joint and muscle damage with little or no visual marks to the body. Tai Chi refers to the spiritual aspect, Quan (hand or fist) refers to the martial aspect.

@ShaolinArtsAZ

@@williampalminteri1727 which begs the question… Tai Chi Chuan according to whom? See for example… “Even though the Chen Style still mostly involves soft movements, there is a mixture of hard and soft movements. Again, it should be clear to the spectator that the force of the movement is not necessarily constantly soft, but hard movements are scattered throughout the form set. For example, in the First Lu of the Chen Style, about 30% (or roughly 25) of the 83 forms involve some degree of hard movements. Just like in the case of fast and slow movements, it may be only part of a form that is hard, i.e., even within one form, there could be a mixture of hard and soft movements. It is important to emphasize that hard and soft as described in this paragraph refer to the external appearance of the form movement. Through Taiji qigong practice, a form movement may appear to be soft externally, but internally it may be very hard.” www.dontow.com/2008/04/brief-comparison-of-the-chen-and-yang-style-taijiquan/

The biggest problem with all Chinese Martial Arts is that they don't account for the timing and distance. All techniques do work, but only if the timing and distance are calculated appropriately.

Looks great, go try in a real fight. The deadly art of pushing.
@ShaolinArtsAZ
@ShaolinArtsAZ 3 года назад
Absolutely. Want to come in and give it a try? I think you may misunderstand. The movement is not designed merely to push. If forcefully applied, the opponent’s wrist will be shattered. By moving the opponent to the ground, one gains an advantage in the fight. It’s not the whole fight, just a part. The way to win a fight is to give yourself a series of advantages.
