If you have a boat, mold and mildew seem to come with the territory. But there are a number of ways to keep it controlled, reduce damage, and get rid of that musty smell in cabins and compartments. BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow shows you a number of simple techniques for reducing or combating mold and mildew on both new and old boat vinyl, as well as how to control mustiness aboard.

There are many other good vinyl stain removers and protectants on the market. Just be sure not to use products containing bleach.

Good question, Joe! Sorry I missed that one in the description. I'll add it. It's a desiccant. DampRid is one of the most common brands, but there are others that do the same thing. Starbrite offers its own version called No Damp, available from West Marine. Arm & Hammer has one as well, I think. They are really effective, low tech (the granules pull moisture from the air and it drains to the bottom of the container), and inexpensive. They even make bagged versions with hooks that can be hung in closets or lockers. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Best I found is Lysol mold and mildew. Blows away all these other wanna be products

Hi Darryl. I just looked up the ingredients, and while Lysol M&M might be effective, it's also going to vastly shorten the life of any vinyls you use it on. It contains bleach, which breaks down the vinyl, destroys the stitching, and could discolor any fabrics nearby from overspray. The best option is to keep mold and mildew from getting a hold to begin with by cleaning regularly and sealing with 303 Aerospace Protectant. If you've got old vinyl that you're trying to get a couple extra years out of before replacement, then go for it. But if you're trying to keep good vinyl looking good, start saving for replacement now. Also, bleach isn't the most environmentally friendly, even in small amounts. The products we recommend are both effective on those specific tough stains and kinder to marine life and ecosystems.
