Thank you for this video! I’m picking up my very first batch of unprocessed alpaca fibre this afternoon. So excited… I’ve never spun 100% alpaca fibre so this will be an entirely new series of discoveries and learning moments for me.

I originally started spinning after buying alpacas. Other than a little bit of practice wool, I have only ever spun 100% alpaca. I have so much and don't know what to blend it with/ don't want to ruin it by blending/don't know where to source blending fiber from that I don't ever blend my alpaca fiber with anything. I am increasing my fiber processing equipment and just bought some Valkyrie fine combs. Thank you for making this video so I can see how the finicky alpaca fiber works on combs.😂

Thanks for this video. I have champion alpaca blankets and the Valkyrie ultra fine combs but haven't been confident using them. Appreciate being able to recomb what's left after using the Diz. I have used the drum carder on previous blankets but this is way better! The combs were worth the money thanks to your help!

I agree with the static electricity buildup! It can get really bad in winter when the air is dry! Spinning alpaca is lovely… 😍

Oh this is satisfying to watch 😍 I love that you thought of how to make things a bit more DIY for people as it's hard to try new hobbies if you can't afford lots of new equipment. I got sheep fleeces which I've done some processing and spinning with and a kilo of alpaca coming soon! I had a dog brush which worked OK just doing small bits by hand and a flea comb that I broke 😂 I find it easiest to just wash and pull bits into little bunches to dry, as I hate trying to card it! I'm gonna see if I can find some combs like this. I totally thought you could try with forks though 😁

I love this stuff. I don’t have combs can hand carders achieve the same thing? I need to find locks too. Lol

I would love to try spinning. Can’t afford to get a spinning wheel. Maybe a drop spindle ? I want to learn

Definitely recommend that is how I started!

Definitely try a drop spindle, you can even make one if you look for tutorials online 🙂 I bought one on Etsy and it's much easier than I thought! You just need that and a small bundle of roving or top from Ebay or Etsy to try spinning 🙂 I have raw fleeces and the processing is much harder than spinning but I'm getting there 😁

ThNksAmanda, I did look up howto make one and that may be the way I go. I have 10 bags of roving from my alpacas last year. So I’m also ready for the challenge. I have watch countless videos on spindle spinning also. 😊

What about VM I have an alpaca fleece with tons of straw and stuff. I have tried combining and carding but it doesn't come out. Any suggestions?
@RayneFiberArts
@RayneFiberArts 2 года назад
VM is a toughie, I would just try to pick as much as possible out before washing and after washing then try combing twice. You can also "flick" on a dog card or hand card if most of it is in the tips before you comb. It can waste a lot but it works. Hope this helps thank you for your wonderful question!

How many skeins do you get from one fleece?
@RayneFiberArts
@RayneFiberArts Год назад
It depends so much on the fiber type, the way you prepare it and the size of the fleece, how much lanolin is in it. However, I can say that I got 7 skeins from an alpaca fleece that weighed around 2 and a half pounds. You get roughly 4 skeins per pound depending on so many factors there really is no way to answer this question. You always get some loss in the lanolin and dirt from washing and then more loss in the way it is processed.

Wow!!! Ok. So trial and error. I’m sheeting my Tunis sheep for the first time this match. Just trying to figure out about how much to expect. Again thank you for the videos! Would you recommend combing and carding? I’ve seen some who just card.
