Our Rye crop is ready for harvest!
We hire a neighbor to come in with his Massey Ferguson 9895 to combine our rye. The next day we bale the straw with our New Holland BB940 square baler.
Thanks for watching!

weather is so so so dry over there with you thats why it went up into the machine ........we here in ireland have a very wet summer here after a very dry spring and a crop like that would be lost .......the straw would be rotten and the grain sprouted ever before u could cut it ............

I remember growing rye for cows to graze at the end of the 1970's. It got to advanced for the cows to eat, so we left 2 acres to combine. It took 2 days to combine and we had 600 small bales of straw! Didn't do it again!!!

Good to see the Massey combine working. . . . My grandfather who farmed east of Saskatoon, was a Massey fan. He did break down and buy a John Deere tractor from my uncle who had a dealership in Asquith, Saskatchewan before John Deere changed their tractors to more than 2 cylinders. Your rye crop was certainly a good crop. You can use the straw in the dairy barn for sure. I like your RU-vid channel because it brings many memories back to life. Thank you.

As someone (in the UK) who has never seen rye harvested I find it amazing the way that flattened and matted crop gets so cleanly harvested by the combine.
@johnnyholland8765
@johnnyholland8765 11 месяцев назад
It is a common problem with rye. You develop a method and todays grain heads are better at getting a downed crop into the machine. We have a "floating cutter bar" that will literally shave the ground. Sometimes you have to cut it only in one direction depending on which way the crop is laying. This operator has done this before hence his good job...
@georgedoorley5628
@georgedoorley5628 11 месяцев назад
seen rye cut for grain here in ireland .......lots of shortener used to keep the crop standing .......still a bitch to get it through the combine ....very hard on man and machine .....if it lay down like that in the video here this year it would rot with all the wet weather we are having ..at the moment ...........lots of spring barley flattened here this year

Some of the toughest combining of my youth on the farm was the year my grandfather grew rye. We didn't have many smaller feed bags and soon ran out and had to use the larger bags which were hard to lift. We were used to wheat and oats. He sold the crop to the local feed mill. When we loaded it all onto the pickup truck, the front end lifted up off the ground. He had to put the heavier bags on each front fender so he could drive it into town. That was the last year for rye.
