Thanks so much for doing this one. It's one of my absolute favourite Pentatonix songs. I found the original very good and full credit for his composing this song with its great melody and quirky lyrics. But you could hear how much Pentatonix had to work with, which they grabbed with both hands. Really enjoyable musical experience.
Sheldrake commented on Pentatonix’s video amen thanked them for covering his song. I love when the original artist is happy that someone covered their song.
I just saw you did this one! Yeah!!! 👋🏼 I never heard the original. Definitely an upgrade by Pentatonix. This is such a fun, silly song. Pentatonix are from the U.S. Three of the are from Arlington Texas. One from Kentucky. The original Bass is from California. And the new bass is from Maryland. If you want more info about them and don’t feel like looking, let me know and I can fill you in.
Thank you!! I agree.. I really loved the original (hadn't ever heard it either), but PTX took it to a whole different level! ..and the most magical thing about this song are the whimsical lyrics! This one has remained in my top 10 for years now.
After I heard the Pentatonix cover, I looked up the original just to see what it had sounded like. While I appreciate the original, I have to say I like the PTX version better. You can't help but want to move with the PTX version! Cosmo commented on the Pentatonix video, thanking them for covering his song - that's a classy act!
This song is know for being in an Apple ad. The one with all the different colored people running in formation. Pentatonix took and ran with it too. Very catchy and quirky. But able to highlight every singer in the group. And the chorus is so "bouncy"........... Thanks for the reaction
I had never heard Cosmo Sheldrake's version of Come Along and it's a brilliant song, but I do believe Pentatonix's version has more life to it. I'd say more color as well, but that could be the video influence. Pentatonix is just more upbeat and fun.
This was so fun… I was familiar with the PTX cover (I think they probably had a lot of laughs and fun doing this one) but enjoyed hearing for the first time the original, and it was enjoyable… but I agree, PTX is the one I’d choose again and again. I have a suggestion for your consideration: Rise by Katy Perry, covered by Superfruit and friends. Not sure if you’ve done Superfruit yet, it’s a separate endeavor by Scott and Mitch of PTX, and in this cover they’ve invited 3 very talented musician friends. Superfruit is not particularly acapella, but it underscores so well that they’ve known each other (school, children’s musical theater, etc) since elementary school. Same with Kirstie and Mitch.. think it was high school when they became The Trio. Okay, anyhoo, sorry for all the extra, it’s just deeply powerful what Superfruit and friends with Rise. Thanks as always!
Second this suggestion - Superfruit (with Brian Austin Crum, Mario Jose and Mary Lambert) covers this song incredibly (with a very poignant back story as to why they came together for this song).
This cover is one of my favorite PTX songs. I heard Pentatonix before the original & listening to both I was blown away with what Pentatonix did with the song. I never heard of Sheldrake either. I just remember ready he was an indie artist. They made the song come to life. I think each member was highlighted & I love the energy. This cover highlights their arrangement talents. I’m new to your channel so I’m learning about your likes & dislikes. 2 recommendations: 1)a universally loved Elvis cover, given the recent death of his daughter. Pentatonix official video of Can’t Help Falling in Love. Their 5 part harmony is just beautiful, smooth and perfect. 2)after hearing your intro that you had just come back from church, I can’t recommend enough Pentatonix official video covering Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) it’s heavenly ✌️💚🥶
Cosmo’s original song got flash-in-the-pan famous when it was on a commercial some years ago, maybe during the Olympics or Super Bowl or some such popular event. I believe it was a commercial for FedEx, of all things. I agree, the first version is interesting, but the cover is so sparkling and dimensional. I love that you reacted to them both together in one video!
Your shirt is fun! I had never heard the original when the PTX version was dropped, so I went looking for it. I love how whimsical and quirkily "off" it is. Cosmo Sheldrake wrote the song in 2018, though it feels very much 60's, like the Beatles Yellow Submarine. Apparently it was used in an Apple commercial. The fish illustrations are both perfect and incongruous. I love that the whole thing is an invitation, while also being vaguely threatening, like the candy house in Hanzel and Gretel. I like the Alice in Wonderland-ness of it all, which is also referenced in the lyrics along with Winnie the Pooh (which, of course, is entirely positive, but also whimsical). When they perform this live, PTX goes strolling through a crazy projected landscape of mushrooms and whatnot, and they "grow" like Alice. It fits perfectly, and seems to be a nod to Cosmo, who loves mushrooms. I'm not sure I agree that Pentatonix did an upgrade, here, since in a way it's apples and oranges. Both come at the same feel from different directions. The a capella arrangement and performance is so incredibly done, though, it has become one of my favorite PTX covers.
I agree Gina! I don’t think it’s an upgrade although I may have used that term. Just different interpretations. My daughter got me that shirt for Christmas She didn’t know Suesue had gotten me a Uke for Christmas so the timing was awesome
I missed this one when it came out, sorry, but yay! It’s one of my favorites from PTX. Gotta love a good chair-boogie song! I’m right there with you - love the name Cosmo Sheldrake, had never heard the original and favor the Pentatonix version. I can echo the recommendation below for Rise by Katy Perry and the cover by Superfruit. They recorded it as an LGBTQ response to the shooting at the Pulse nightclub, and it’s powerful. Loved your reaction, as always, and, off-subject, I don’t think I’ve mentioned that I think you have fabulous hair! Peace from Ohio …
Might I suggest Havana original and cover by pentatonix. Also their cover of over the river (yes that old Christmas time song) is a very creative approach
I like both the original and the upgrade, but in different ways. Yes to Sheldrake on the lyrics, the quirkness. But also his version has underlying dissonance that emphasizes the "don't waste your life, time runs out" message. The PTX upgrade is much more lighthearted, emphasizing what to do instead of wasting time: chase your dreams, even the seemingly silly or imaginary ones. Sometimes, I need Sheldrake's mournful kick in the pants, but most of the time I need PTX's more hopeful emphasis.
Might I suggest post modern jukebox? They do vintage jazz and big band covers of very well known iconic songs. Like Creep, All About the Base, purple rain, Dream On ... etc. They are a treat to see
Thank you Denise! I have done some PMJ and Haley Reinhart Some of your suggestions are on the list but I’ll check and make sure I have them all Thanks again!!
If it's not on your list, add the PMJ version of "Toxic" (featuring Melinda Doolittle). Hearing a Britney Spears production turned into a torch song is hilarious, and nobody could pull it off like PMJ.
Thank You!!! I would expect any less but your honesty. But hey, if you don't like the genre of Acapella, why play it? Is your channel after all...(as you like to remind people) Just a thought.
Non PTX, non a cappella recommendation: Brian Justin Crumb covering Radiohead’s Creep. It’s was his 2nd live audition on America’s Got Talent. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SnAeCZdFaE0.html. His 1st live audition was great too when he covered Queen’s Somebody to Love is incredible too but his Creep is breathtaking ✌️❤️🥶
