British artist John Craxton started a life long love affair with Greece in the 1940's which inspired much of his work. The Pallant House Gallery in Chichester is putting on the largest showing of his work for over ten years. Come and join me as I explore this uplifting show.
Tickets can be bought here until 21st April 2024: pallant.org.uk...

Afternoon George; I watched this yesterday and it brightened up a wet day! I knew nothing about John Craxton until now; many thanks. I have been visiting Pallant House a couple of times a year since I discovered it in 2012; by way of the Lucian Freud exhibition at the NPG. David Dawson: working with Freud; was on at the same time so I ventured down there. Have you ever been to the Watts Gallery? the Photographs from the Brian May Archive of Stereoscopy; ends this weekend. Keep up the good work.

It is a lovely gallery to visit, isn't it? I try to get down for most shows there. I have not been to the Watts Gallery since it was refurbished - a very long time ago. I simply must get down there, probably in the summer as I walked to it along the North Downs Way and enjoyed that. Thank you for reminding me - I will aim to got his year.

What a delight! He did the covers for Patrick Leigh Fermor whose work I treasure. I sense some affinity with Modligiani in a strange way, as well as El Greco! I had no idea this rare individual existed until I found your vlog. Thank you! Perhaps a minor talent but one who traveled far from the usual, haunts Also read Norman Douglas 'SouthWind' re Mediterranean sailors!

Thank you for watching! I have never read Patrick Leigh Fermor but now have a couple on the shelf and I look forward to reading. The covers are beautiful. I will also look up Norman Douglas 'SouthWind' - thank you.

It's interesting how identifiable art is to a certain era and style. these works could easily blend into an exhibition of early/mid 20thC Australian artists, e.g. Arthur Boyd, Joy Hester, Sidney Nolan, John Perceval, Albert Tucker, Danila Vassilieff from the Heide school, and others who broke free from 'traditionally acceptable' realistic impressionism and fought to foist modernism into an extremely staid and under educatged society. It was almost de rigueur for artists - who could afford it - to travel to Britain and France to expand their artistic consciousness. It is highly likely they would have rubbed shoulders with Craxton.

I agree, a very distinctive style of the time. Shamefully of the Australian artists you mention, I have only really seen works by Sidney Nolan. I really need to do explore that period more form an Australian perspective. The Pallant House gallery (where the Craxton show was) did put on a Nolan show in 2017 which I remember well. pallant.org.uk/whats-on/transferences-sidney-nolan-in-britain/

Was not familiar with this artist. I was thinking of Marsden Hartley when looking at the work. I wonder if they knew each other? I see parallels in their work and life.

Thank you for watching. I'm not sure if they knew each other. I wasn't aware of Marsden Hartley's work but have had a brief online look and he looks interesting.
