Part 1 focuses on Alma 13 and examines the priesthood as a preview of the "High Priest of good things to come," the purposes of God's "Order," Christ's "preparatory redemption," and the significance of Melchizedek. Brother Halverson my wife and I so much appreciate your teachings from the Book of Mormon. We have never experienced anything quite like it and for us it is life changing. We started with Mosiah 26 and since then are listening with great intent to each lecture. We are sharing your link with our friends. We feel your gospel insights are at a depth that we have never heard shared. Thank you and please know you’re making a difference. We truly want to be God’s people and are growing to love our Savior and our Father in Heaven more as we are beginning to understand more fully the value of daily repentance and being baptized unto repentance. God bless you for being willing to share the understanding of the scriptures that God has so abundantly blessed you with ...can’t thank you enough!

Thank you so much for your kind words, Robert. I'm really touched by your gratitude. The Book of Mormon and the Spirit of God deserve all the credit. I'm just grateful for the chance to teach such powerful truths--especially to such open-hearted fellow disciples. I'm grateful we get to learn together!

Like so many others who have commented, the lessons you've been sharing have been life-changing for me. The admonition to "study the Scriptures" has always been somewhat nebulous to me; I've never really figured out how to do it and feel that I'm really being effective in my effort. These lessons and your insights are such a great blessing. Of course, we all want COVID to go away but I hope those of us who don't number among your Institute students will still have the benefit and blessing of your teaching. Preparing these videos is incredibly time-consuming, I'm sure, but I hope a way can be found to continue sharing them with all of us.

Thank you for your kindness and encouragement! I know what you mean about wanting to know how to study the scriptures more effectively. We talk a lot about scripture study in the Church, but we don't do much to teach people HOW to do it. I'm glad these lessons have been helpful. Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!

50:52 one day as I was thinking about my ancestors, they being early converts that stuck with the Church and came to Utah, I wondered who they thought was the most important. The answer came very clearly to me. “You.” In astonishment I asked, “Me, why me?” “Because you’re in the middle of the fight.” I felt so loved to know my ancestors care so very much about me, a they do about all of us. I’ve been waiting for doctrine to back that up, when just today I listened to John Bytheway quote President John Taylor, “God lives and His eyes are over us. And, His angels are round and about us and they are more interested in us, than we’re are in ourselves. Ten thousand times, but we do not know it.”

Yes! John Milton for the win! I took a John Milton class last semester. We spent the majority of the semester studying Paradise Lost and it was so interesting! I actually feel like it really strengthened my testimony despite the fact that not all of Milton's thoughts and beliefs perfectly align with ours as Latter-Day Saints.

I loved Paradise Lost! I think Milton shares insights into the Fall that I've only seen in the Pearl of Great Price accounts (not in the Genesis version). It must have been the Spirit that helped Milton to be so insightful!

I have always struggled with reading Alma 13. It seems to me that the first 11 verses are just constant repetitions and redundancies that make my head spin. I'm thankful for Brother Halverson's detailed line-by-line analysis that helps to identify the minutiae and show how each repetition builds upon the previous one. The Book of Mormon never contradicts the Bible, but often expands and clarifies its teachings, in addition to revealing new truths. See Alma 13:28, for example. The language about not being tempted above that which we can bear in 1 Cor. 10:13 seems to come without condition, as a free gift. But Alma asserts that we must “watch and pray” for this assurance to become efficacious. Good to know!

Question....we were committing sin in our pre life... how were we able to be in god’s presence.?
@Unshaken
@Unshaken 4 года назад
Great question! The key is whether or not we get to "stay" in God's presence and live with Him eternally. Overcoming our sinfulness so that we can eventually be able to do that is the point of the whole Plan. The unclean can "be" in the presence of God, but they cannot eternally "dwell" in God's presence. It's the "dwelling" part that's the difference. In some ways, because of the omnipresence of God's spirit, we are always "in His presence." As the Psalmist said, "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?" (Ps. 139:7). The question is, can we become worthy enough to "dwell" in His presence (to stay there permanently)? As Lehi taught, "there is no flesh that can DWELL in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah" (2 Ne. 2:8). A fallen Adam and Eve tried to hide (unsuccessfully) from God's presence; at the beginning of the Book of Job, Satan is in God's presence; there's a great verse in the Psalms (Ps. 51:11) when a fallen David prays, "Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me." Again, there's that sense of being in God's presence but not being able to stay there. I hope that helps a bit!
@joepiloto
@joepiloto 4 года назад
Thank you for this insightful lesson. I appreciate the reverence you focused on regarding the true name of the Melch. PH. Why do you suppose with this injunction for reverence of His name our current High Priest has shifted course and now encouraged the more frequent use as opposed to other monikers?
@Unshaken
@Unshaken 4 года назад
Great question. There must be something we don't fully understand about that verse in D&C 107. One thought I've had is that it speaks of "the name of the Supreme Being" and the full name of the priesthood mentions "God," but not "Jesus Christ." So perhaps it is the Father whose name that verse is protecting. Also, talk of the Melchizedek Priesthood usually occurs between members, while the name of the Church is used very frequently with non-members, and we're not doing them any favors by not clarifying whose Church it is. There's probably more than that, but there's my two cents! Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!

Why do people of other faiths get so upset when sharing the plan of salvation and talking about becoming like Heavenly Father?
@Unshaken
@Unshaken 4 года назад
Great question. Usually they feel that it somehow takes away from God, when from our perspective it is simply adding to His glory. Or they think that we're replacing God, usurping His authority, or somehow becoming independent of Him (none of which is true). And often it's our own fault, in terms of the way that we explain it. Most believe that the grace of Jesus makes us into people who are more like Him. We just clarify the eternal nature of that growth--forever becoming more and more like Jesus. In one of the videos about King Benjamin (I think!), I talk a little more about this topic. It's such a powerful one!
@michaelharrisactor
@michaelharrisactor 4 года назад
Hi Bro Halveson: Great presentation. I found your remarks about the priest's breastplate compelling. Can you talk a litttle more about the "reasonable service" that we are preparing for when we put on our holy breastplates...?
@Unshaken
@Unshaken 4 года назад
Great question! I love how Paul uses that phrase ("reasonable service") in Romans 12:1, which he defines as "present[ing] your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God." I think that's a beautiful tie-in to the ancient priesthood, since so much of their daily service was presenting sacrifices to God. Like we talked about in this lesson, if everything they did was meant to point them (and others) forward to Jesus Christ, then their sacrificial offerings were a type and shadow of Jesus presenting His body "a living sacrifice," which is also what He asks of each of us. Considering all He gave for us, it does seem perfectly "reasonable" for us to offer Him all our heart, might, mind, and strength in service to God and humanity--treating one another like the "precious stones" the high priest bore over his heart, lifting each other like the "precious stones" on his shoulders, serving with "holiness to the Lord" always on our minds, etc. We often think we're being asked to do too much, but like Paul said, the service God asks of us is perfectly "reasonable." In fact, it's an honor to give it. Thanks so much for asking!

I have an impression; but first consider the events. J.S gave the prestood to blacks in the beginning, after his death apostle and BY walked it back. Lots of conversation about why... Then I heard someone say that God commanded it in the beginning and influence of man and society changed it. So did God have to wait for "men" to be aligned to bring it back in 1978? God does not wait, he can make the way with all things possible. Now with the increased and rise of discrimination right now, many might look back on this. My impression is that it was not withheld from blacks for the blacks. I'm thinking it was done to judge us, the discriminating judges from what we think are higher places. Could it be like having a child that is mentally handicapped, the child will never be more then a child. They are already accomplished to celestial glory. Who's being taught and challenge? The child or the parents?

Great thoughts. Psalm 78:41 says that ancient Israel "limited the Holy One of Israel" and I think we continue to do that all the time. And the Lord in His patience waits for us to catch up, to get out of His way, to allow Him to do what He's wanted to do for a long, long time. Thanks again for your comments!

B.M Alma13:3: now creation, fall atonement-b4 atonement, fall, creation. Shouldn´t it be the latter: atonement, creation, fall; because without creation where would we fall?

Elder Holland is one who has definitely repudiated false doctrines about the priesthood and African Americans.

Yes. I'm grateful for his clear and powerful voice! Sad to think that the last remaining apostles that were there for the 1978 revelation have all passed on. What a blessing to have that added light and truth.
