Incredible discussion. There are many, many Come Follow Me discussions being led by seminary teachers via blogs and RU-vid, etc... and they are all good. But your discussion has been my favorite. Humble teaching demeanor. Clear doctrinal points being discussed without fanfare. But most especially, you shared your insights with the Spirit and I was genuinely uplifted and edified and learned things I had not previously comprehended or understood to the degree I do now after pondering your teachings and listening by the Spirit. Thank you very much.

I have a 3 year old son, I am inactive in the Church, I have committed myself though to the BOM course cause I love this book. The things I learn through my own personal study and what you brethren bring help me a lot in such a way I can not tell you. I want to keep a journal of this course as I go through it with you and someday present this journal to my son. I don't know when but I feel that it will matter to him someday. Thank you for the time and effort.

I love these videos too, they help me with teaching/ leading a discussion in the Sunday School class for the adults in my ward. I do hope you have the manual "Come, Follow Me - For Individuals and Familes" It will help in your study of the Book of Mormon and help you share these things with your son now, and as he grows. God will bless you for every effort. His promises are true.

If you want to stay here, then you cannot eat of that fruit. If you want to stay here, then I forbid you to eat it. But you may act for yourself, and you may eat of it if you want to. And if you eat it, you will die. “I see a great difference between transgressing the law and committing a sin” (Joseph Fielding Smith, “Fall-Atonement-Resurrection-Sacrament,” in Charge to Religious Educators, 124).

I was under the impression that Adam and Eve did not have a knowledge of good and evil, or a knowledge much of anything. Did they know that by eating the fruit of knowedge of good and evil that they could have children? If you find any sources let me know! Thank you guys and God bless
@scripturecentralofficial

It’s implied that they both knew enough to make that choice, otherwise it would have been a completely random occurrence. In order for the plan to have worked, both Eve and Adam needed to have that choice and make it knowing full well what the consequences would be. Hopefully this clarifies it for you. :)

The timing of a blessing is the Lords. The Lord would've allowed them to partake of the fruit in His time. Like us, they were impatient and sought fruit before the works of OBEDIENCE were offered. We would be here regardless of their decision.

Matt, I use to feel the same way. This video gave me the insight and knowledge I needed in order to FINALLY understand it. OPPOSITION IN ALL THINGS, was needed for them to CHOOSE FOR THEMSELVES, and use THEIR AGENCY! God could have told them, but then they would not have acted for themselves. God's Plan of Salvation was always with the Fall, the Atonement, our Savior, Eternal Life. They would have never known how to act for themselves if God always told them what to do next. Please re-listen to this video. I know it was exactly what I needed in order to learn and understand.
@tylerwren587
@tylerwren587 4 года назад
Imagine Eve struggling and pondering this decision for a long time. She finally decides that in order to obey a higher commandment, she must partake and take upon herself death but for a higher, selfless cause... Then when God comes back, she hides? And when God asks why she partook, she honestly responds "Satan beguiled me".... The doctrine within the scriptures do not support the idea that Eve partook knowingly. Rather, scripture describe the choice as "yielding to temptation", "deceived" and "disobedience". We should not blame Eve for the choice. She did not have the knowledge of good and evil and was deceived. But it contradicts doctrine to say it was a righteous choice or done knowingly in attempt to live a higher law.

@@swissmann thanks for your response. 1. Yes, they hid themselves because they were naked, but that was a symbolic of being guilty. God even connects the two - have you eaten of the tree I commanded you not to? 2. There may have been "no other way" than to partake of the fruit, but even that was half true. It seems strongly suggested that there was a correct way to do so. There is "no other way" to enter the kingdom of Heaven but by baptism. But that doesn't make it correct for me to baptize my 4 year old daughter by myself. It is not the correct time and I don't have the authority to make that decision. Even if I hold the priesthood. We know Satan seeks to imitate the Lord. He sought to be our Savior in premortality, he appeared to Moses claiming to be the Only Begotten, he attempts to replicate sacred ordinances without the authority to do so. He saw what was being done on other worlds and wanted to replicate it. But it was not his place or authority to do so. So he was cursed for it and angry because the same thing was being done on other worlds. The difference is, he wasn't authorized. Eve personally used the word "beguiled" but the scriptures also say she was deceived. "And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression." In this way she was fully beguiled and deceived. Although the fruit may inherently be a good thing, it was taken prematurely before God declared it so. I liked the reference to "bitter" being taken before it's time. 3. She was choosing between good and evil. God had commanded it not to be done but promised to provide further instructions. Whatever God commands is right. Breaking His commandments is the definition of evil. However, she was in a state of innocence. Since she was missing a component of full agency - knowledge of good and evil, it was considered a transgression and not a sin. 4. There is nothing to suggest Eve's decision was based on having children. Satan didn't even tempt her with that. It was about gaining knowledge and becoming as God. Only after she partook, did she convince Adam to do so because they were going to be separated and therefore have no children as God commanded. Adam understood this so he knowingly "partook that man may be". 5. "Nevertheless" did not refer to God wanting them to do it. It was clarifying that they had agency. The reason this was so important was that this was the first time they were actually able to exercise their agency and choose between obeying God or not. They had never been faced with an opposing or wrong choice. Everything in the garden was acceptable to do. So he commands them not to do something "nevertheless" they could choose. Meaning it was always greater that agency should prevail than just a commandment. It goes back to Satan's plan. If he said, do not eat of this tree, and to make sure you don't I'm going to have cheribum guard it so you don't have the option. No, the fact that they should have agency was even more important than the commandment. Otherwise the commandment would not mean anything. He didn't say "nevertheless, you should take it because that's the only way". So he commands them not to, but they necessarily have agency, but don't do it because he forbids it. Here's a great quote I found from Joseph Smith that I illustrates this principle of heaven very well - But we cannot keep all the commandments without first knowing them, and we cannot expect to know all, or more than we now know, unless we comply with or keep those we have already received. That which is wrong under one circumstance, may be and often is, right under another. God said thou shalt not kill,-at another time he said thou shalt utterly destroy. This is the principle on which the government of heaven is conducted-by revelation adapted to the circumstances in which the children of the kingdom are placed. Whatever God requires is right, no matter what it is, although we may not see the reason thereof till long after the events transpire. If we seek first the kingdom of God, all good things will be added. So with Solomon-first he asked wisdom, and God gave it him, and with it every desire of his heart, even things which may be considered abominable to all who do not understand the order of heaven only in part, but which, in reality, were right, because God gave and sanctioned by special revelation. A parent may whip a child, and justly too, because he stole an apple; whereas, if the child had asked for the apple, and the parent had given it, the child would have eaten it with a better appetite, there would have been no stripes-all the pleasures of the apple would have been received, all the misery of stealing lost. This principle will justly apply to all of God's dealings with his children. Every thing that God gives us is lawful and right, and 'tis proper that we should enjoy his gifts and blessings whenever and wherever he is disposed to bestow; but if we should seize upon these same blessings and enjoyments without law, without revelation, without commandment, those blessings and enjoyments would prove cursings and vexations in the end, and we should have to go down in sorrow and wailings of everlasting regret.

This is a great question and discussion @TylerWren. For centuries, Eve has been vilified and denigrated. More recently, we have had statements from our prophets and apostles speaking of the fall not as a mistake, a selfish decision, or premature misstep, but rather as a fortunate preplanned event. President Nelson has spoken of Eve as much as anyone. He never emphasizes the beguiling aspect of Satan in the event. He puts much more emphasis on her making a wise and courageous choice. For example, he said, "Happily for them, “the Lord said unto Adam [and Eve26]: Behold I have forgiven thee thy transgression in the Garden of Eden” (Moses 6:53). We and all mankind are forever blessed because of Eve’s great courage and wisdom. By partaking of the fruit first, she did what needed to be done. Adam was wise enough to do likewise." In 2015, he said, "We need women who have the courage and vision of our Mother Eve.” (“A Plea to My Sisters,” October 2015 General Conference) Elder Dallin H. Oaks explained it this way: "When Adam and Eve received the first commandment, they were in a transitional state, no longer in the spirit world but with physical bodies not yet subject to death and not yet capable of procreation. They could not fulfill the Father’s first commandment without transgressing the barrier between the bliss of the Garden of Eden and the terrible trials and wonderful opportunities of mortal life. For reasons that have not been revealed, this transition, or “fall,” could not happen without a transgression-an exercise of moral agency amounting to a willful breaking of a law (see Moses 6:59). This would be a planned offense, a formality to serve an eternal purpose...It was Eve who first transgressed the limits of Eden in order to initiate the conditions of mortality. Her act, whatever its nature, was formally a transgression but eternally a glorious necessity to open the doorway toward eternal life. Adam showed his wisdom by doing the same. And thus Eve and “Adam fell that men might be” (2 Ne. 2:25). Some Christians condemn Eve for her act, concluding that she and her daughters are somehow flawed by it. Not the Latter-day Saints! Informed by revelation, we celebrate Eve’s act and honor her wisdom and courage in the great episode called the Fall (see Bruce R. McConkie, “Eve and the Fall,” Woman, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1979, pp. 67-68). Joseph Smith taught that it was not a “sin,” because God had decreed it (see The Words of Joseph Smith, ed. Andrew F. Ehat and Lyndon W. Cook, Provo, Utah: Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University, 1980, p. 63). Brigham Young declared, “We should never blame Mother Eve, not the least” (in Journal of Discourses, 13:145). Elder Joseph Fielding Smith said: “I never speak of the part Eve took in this fall as a sin, nor do I accuse Adam of a sin. … This was a transgression of the law, but not a sin … for it was something that Adam and Eve had to do!” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, comp. Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols., Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1954-56, 1:114-15). This suggested contrast between a sin and a transgression reminds us of the careful wording in the second article of faith:" There are many more statements from the prophets and apostles regarding this. I'm just trying to find ways to understand the scriptural statements in light of these "fortunate fall" statements. Look at how Adam and Eve spoke of their own fall in Moses 5:10-12. There is no lamentation about being beguiled or having made a poor or untimely decision. They are glorifying God and are grateful for the decision that was made. While many in the Christian world want to slap Eve on their way out of the garden, I want to give her a hug.

Before y'all said there's a Mount Moriah and a Mount Sinai covenant. Does that mean a patriarchal blessing is considered to be a Mount Sinai covenant? Pretty much al of them say something about the blessings are dependent on obeying the laws/commandments. Have been wondering about this for awhile now.

Your patriarchal blessings would be a personal supplement to God's covenantal instructions and commandments.

@@raysalmon6566 So, I take it that you don’t believe the Book of Mormon? You are entitled to your opinion, of course. I presume you have read it because you mention King Benjamin, who doesn’t appear until after Nephi has died. Do you believe in God? Not only is there so much evidence of mesoamercans and the archeological studies that are coming out to prove the truth of the Book of Mormon, but I have a very strong testimony of its truths. I am so sorry that you think it’s all fictional. Best regards.

I have not went through it all yet, so just commenting on a part. I disagree that there has to be a law for everything. As noted, the law punishes. How much more obedient to God would we be if we made a good choice (give property back to owner) rather than a bad choice (keep property for themselves) without a punishment affixed. If there is no punishment, that shows the true character of the person. The law (punishment) just tries to get you to consider (by force) to choose the good choice so that you won't reap the bad choice results (punishment). However then there is the saying that "the rewards you receive are based upon the law you obey" (rough quote), so therefore contrary to the talk, the law is not about punishment alone but also rewards. A good place for "Teach them correct principles (why should I not keep someone else's property)(OK, now I understand) and they govern themselves". Of course we don't live in a perfect world where folks will choose the correct principle always after the explanation. Yet the closer we live to that principle and the less we rely on human law to force us, via punishment, I believe the closer we will be to God. Thoughts???

Some things have natural consequences even with no explicit law against it, like jumping off a cliff. You will fall and be injured or die as the consequences. Without God's law, we don't know if something is right or wrong, or we have the excuse "it isn't written anywhere" such as smoking or drinking beer. It wasn't until modern revelation gave us the Word of Wisdom that we were taught these things are bad for us and against God's law. Jesus taught the higher law, so we are not supposed to seek retaliation, for example, as previously in the Mosaic law of an eye for an eye, etc. The Holy Ghost helps us desire to do good things without thinking of the punishment for not doing the good thing. For example, we might feel inspired to read the BOM and then are blessed for doing that. Not doing it causes us to miss out on blessings, but we aren't "punished" directly for not doing it. Good people generally don't desire to do very evil things, but we all have our weaknesses, areas where we are more easily tempted. The law sets the boundaries so we can more clearly see the path...and holding to the iron rod guides us on that path. Hope these thoughts help a little.

Why didn't Satan entice them with the fruit of the Tree of Life? Would that have defeated his purpose and they would have had eternal bodies in a state of innocence and he could not tempt them?
@taylorhalverson3052
@taylorhalverson3052 4 года назад
They already had access to the fruit of the tree of life and could eat of it. In fact, as long as they ate of that tree, they were able to live forever in the garden. Only after they partook of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil were they barred from partaking of the fruit of the tree of life. Jesus is now our tree of life.

Thank you for that clarification. I will reread that section again with new understanding. If am not mis -remembering, sometime, wasn't the tree of Life fruit referred to as bitter in the Garden? If so, then in Lehi's dream it was described as being sweet beyond all other fruit. Because.........now the plan was in place, the fruit was ripe and Christ was the full grown tree?

The reason it is beautiful that the eternal promises are called the Abrahamic Covenant is because it is the promise that if we lay claim to the the Atonement of Jesus Christ, substituting His sufferings for our sins if we repent and keep covenants as symbolized by Facsimile 1 and Abraham's symbolic sacrifice, we are on the path of sanctification through Christ's mercies. Or first covenant starts the process with us becoming as if we were Christ, taking His name upon us. Fac. 2, as explained by Nibley in many of his writings, is the journey we take through Covenant keeping to gain our exaltation and prepare ourselves to be stamped justified; the process of the journey of baptism through fire and the Spirit. This process holds the promises of a glorious Resurrection and inheritance. Face. 3 is the establishment of thrones and principalities (promised Land). Qualifying for those promises, make us a king or queen under the holy order of God. And with His permission, as typified by pharaoh as (but pharaoh, without the priesthood it had no efficacy... Thank goodness for Melchizedek) the type and shadow of the Father, He gave his witness along with pharaoh's son (Christ symbol), that Abraham had received the qualifications of an eternal Father with the right of eternal seed. It is in mortality that we lay the foundation of our eternal kingdom. We are commanded to do the work of Abraham. He was mortal, as are we. We can climb Jacob's ladder (covenant path) and receive those same promises even though none of us are as great as our Heavenly Father. Abraham did, we can also. It is my opinion that some names represent offices and titles and are a key to understanding the plan of salvation and that Abraham assists the Father in that high office, making his name perfect for the eternal covenant of exaltation and Eternal Parenthood.

P.S. I spoke (wrote) too soon. After posting my comment, I went back to your lesson and realized I jumped the gun. You went on to discuss the 2 commandments. The following is what I wrote prior to discovering I had erred: You forgot to mention that Heavenly Father gave Adam and Eve 2 commandments. The first, which is considered the greater commandment, was to multiply and replenish the earth. The second, which is considered the lesser commandment, was not to partake of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Being in a state of innocence they could not obey the commandment to multiply and replenish the earth until they lost their innocence by either partaking of the fruit or leaving the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve could have been in the Garden of Eden for millennia striving to obey Heavenly Father's commandments. They were most likely frustrated that they were unable to multiply and replenish the earth. Then, there is Satan milling around causing strife. At some point, Mother Eve figured out (on her own or from Satan) that in order to fulfill the greater commandment Adam and she would have to do something different. That something different was to partake of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Her mistake was in partaking of the fruit without first discussing it with Adam. After she ate it, she forced Adam's hand. He had to eat of it, too, or be a lone man in the Garden of Eden, while Eve would be thrust into the cold and dreary world. For humanity to exist, both Adam and Eve, had to depart the Garden of Eden.
