Yes and it is through our own suffering that we learn empathy, the first step towards charity, the pure love of Christ. Then we are able to keep that covenant to mourn with them that mourn. When I was 14 and in great distress at the hands of a mentally ill violent mother, I went to my attic room and prayed to God to “please lead me to the truth. There must be more than this.” 14 years later after much suffering, sin and hopelessness, I found the gospel and was baptized (38 years ago this coming Friday 22 May). Years later after my children were born I was wondering why that prayer wasn’t answered immediately like brother Joseph’s, And I asked God why (without bitterness but with a real desire to understand) and the spirit speaking to my mind said “because I wanted you to know what happiness was not.” However years before that when I had been a member of the Church for only six years and about to come to America from England, I suddenly was given a distinct impression during a spiritual conversation with someone, that God did not hold me accountable for anything I had done during those 28 years before baptism This is a testimony to me that the Lord’s timing always has a reason behind it. One important focus since joining the Church has been missionary work, and recently after praying about my lifelong chronic ill health which has prevented me from living a normal life and decreased my success in every area of my life, including financially, I was told that my entire life had been about preparing me to preach the gospel beyond the veil! I am now 66 years old and my life to most onlookers does not seem all that successful. But I remember after joining the Church feeling all I wanted to do was marry an apostle so I could travel the world sharing the gospel. Of course I see now that my health problems and limited energy would never have allowed for anything like that, but through my patriarchal blessing I was assured that I was on the right track in my desires.

What really struck me in Mosiah 21 was that some of these men that were fighting so hard for their families were that same ones that initially abandoned them. They had learned how important their families were to them and were willing to do anything to free them, even if it meant losing their lives.

I have to comment on 2020 - yes, indeed, the entire world has come to a stop with so much misery and pain. However, our beautiful world is getting a much needed rest and is literally breathing easier. Our homes are much more meaningful, we are appreciating the small things, like fresh water and being able to physically help a stranger or friend. We are all appreciating people like our trash/sanitation crews, postal workers, and so many others who we rarely acknowledged or thanked every time we encountered them...day care, teachers, and special needs helpers!!! How many of us have found untapped creativity to solve a need? We are collectively learning compassion, gratitude, inventiveness, and clarity for what our base values really are! Even knowing people have lost family or friends and have had to say goodbye through a screen -all that horrendous pain has enabled us to see just how much we had before and what really matters now. This whole mess has been a blessing! I pray each night for this virus to cease, but I am also thanking God for teaching me so much because of it.

Your story about Hashimoto disease resonates with me because I attend 12 step recovery as a family member. That initial reaction to it is "I want to feel better immediately" but it really happens by degrees and also the realization that you change your whole lifestyle to accommodate this treatment method is a hard pill to swallow for family members because they aren't the addict, so another common reaction is "why do I have to do the work, I don't have the problem?" Recovery work is intense and it felt like a second job I was doing for a while because of how much time and energy it took to get my emotional and mental health back. But it is worth it and I am still working it. ;)

It’s taken me a year to feel somewhat ok again. And you’re right, it’s intense work for things we did not do. It’s a high price to be paid for others agency. I take comfort in knowing it has brought me even closer to Christ.

I love the way you presented this. I've been wrestling with the verse about Alma's people "not being able to feel the burdens placed on their backs" for more than three years. My dad passed away in 2016 and I kept wondering if my grief meant I was doing something wrong, because I could certainly feel that burden, and at times it was crushing. But you paired that verse with the one about being "prospered by degrees" -- and sometimes, that's how God blesses us. That has been my experience. Thanks for showing us that both of these stories are stories of God's deliverance, and that it comes in different ways.

I was talking to my daughter about this and she had some good thoughts. Imagine testimony meeting: someone gets up who is testifying strongly of the saviour - we’re all clapping, hallelujah-ing, it’s amazing. Then, the next person, (and I’m sure every ward has one) gets up and gives you a run down of their week - how would the clapping be then? The same would be true of talks, singing, it would highlight those who we feel did ‘better’ and that’s not how the saviour wants us to be. We all receive the same reverent appreciation.

Emilie thank you for sharing your story. It helped me with your observations. I have had a rough 3 years of drs. Of crying to the Lord for help. Finally being delivered when I went in a special elimination die. I too can only eat certain foods, that is how I control my auto immune disease. I will have it the rest of my life but the Lord has shown me how to accept that and a way to relieve the pain.

I also have been struggling these past 8 weeks with my thyroid and have been in bed for most of my days. I have been praying to understand. @@tinysafari1851 Honestly I hope I would act with joy and excitement. Have you ever seen a nursery child or sunbeam when we talk about Jesus? Their whole body lights up! I've been at the bedside for a woman who was hours from death who told me that she could hear the angel choirs and that she couldn't wait to go sing and shout with them! I've heard an African -American sister say that she would shout and praise in the presence of the Lord. Remember David dancing for the Lord? So many of our hymns have become slower and slower. They aren't reverent that way. They're morose. The gospel should make us joyful! On the other hand, I find that a quiet atmosphere is more conducive to seeking revelation.

@@jenb7756 I really liked your comment. My thought was why did Alma go under water after he baptized Helam? It was an act of contrition, an act of humility and an act to the Lord of "I want to be clean, I want to show you that I'm all-in". I want a do-over. We all need do- overs thats what repentance is for. You can show respect and reverence so many different ways, these is not a one size fits all. (I respect President Nelson request in general conference not to clap or shout when a new temple is announced, but express gratitude in our heart.) Out of respect I choose to follow.

2020 has been a fantastic year for us. I'm not dwelling on the negative parts of it, like my husband's appendix rupturing and emergency surgery and him being in the hospital for 10 days with us not being able to visit.I am focusing on the fact that the Lord blessed me with a better job (with insurance) the week before this happened and that he survived and is now mostly healed That all our family and loved ones have been blessed with health and virus free. That my son-in-law was blessed with a new job that pays better (his job cut his pay and made him work the same hours for it), that my third daughter just finished her mortuary science associates degree and has passed her state board exams and can now be blessed with a job she loves that she can help others and also be able to support herself. That my youngest son is graduating in a couple of weeks and even though this has been hard for him not being with his friends, he gets his school work done in a fraction of the time than regular school. And the best blessing of all... That we can still have church and partake of the sacrament each week at home. The Lord knew what was coming and has blessed us abundantly. I love looking for silver linings in everything that happens to me. There have been so many more that I can't even list them all.

I love going through the scriptures over and over, because I, too, find things I’m so happy I didn’t miss! For example, these particular chapters say a lot about the role of women and children. In Mosiah 19: 12-14, I’ve wondered about the men of the land of Noah who wouldn’t leave their women and children when attacked, but then asked their “fair daughters” to stand out in front to plead with the Lamanites! Is this a form of abuse or is it a turning point? Did they recognize not only the beauty, but the courage and leadership ability of their young women? I think of our valiant daughters serving full time missions in places where they “stand forth and plead”, and, yes, sometimes people are merely charmed by their beauty, but womanhood is more powerful than merely physical beauty. Eventually, the group that stays behind (Limhi’s group) IS led back to the gospel, and I think the recognition of their young women is a turning point. The capacity for righteousness includes honoring women and protecting children. I also see a contrast with other young women, the daughters of the Lamanites, who are obviously privileged enough (in Mosiah 20: 1) to “make themselves merry”. Some of these women end up being married the the wicked, worldly priests of Noah who left their families behind, then enslave Alma and his people. In so many ways, the women of the society tell the truth about the entire culture.

Emily, You are saying 2020 is not a good year but once again, because of this trial the Lord is moving us and when we look back and see what we have learned and changed we will not see this as a bad time. As a people we are moving to becoming more faithful, more self reliant, more mindful of what is important because most of our distractions have been eliminated. While I don’t like watching people suffering, I feel that this pandemic has blessed me and has shown me and testified that God is aware of me and is by my side.

We continue to enjoy these weekly supping at the waters of the gospel. Thanks so much. I appreciated your quote from Mary Ellen Edmonds about in times of our distress, we will have a covenant person within reach. From that, I linked in my scriptures Mosiah 21.13 (that is when the people of Limhi stopped trying to get out of bondage and humbled themselves in mighty prayer) to Mosiah 7.1 (this is when Mosiah, a covenant keeping person, was prompted to send out Ammon and the 15 strong men). I connect the fact that Mosiah was prompted to send out the redeeming help from Ammon and the 15 strong men, to when the people of Limhi humbled themselves and turned to the Lord for deliverance.

I love these lessons thank you for filling my day with a bit more light! Also I think maybe we don't clap because, well, I know both of you would get a standing ovation for your thoughts and inspirations in sacrament but let's face it there's always someone who is not the most engaging however much their heart is in it and wouldn't it just be so obvious that that person wouldn't get as much "praise" for their work? Also there we go, we praise the Lord and the words and revelation that flows through us, not the person delivering the message. That's my thoughts on that anyway.

Thank you both so very much. I got introduced to you at the end of the year 2019 when I bought Don’t Miss This at Deseret Bookstore. Along with the Book of Mormon I’m studying the New Testament and have been following your archived lessons. The whole reason for my comment is to share an app called The Chosen. A friend from my ward recommended it. It’s a series of our Savior. We just finished episode 4. The makers have done a beautiful job so far. I thought you and others may enjoy this series. I think another component of wanting a covenant person help is they are aware of an eternal perspective to whatever we are going through so not just thinking that death is the end and suffering happens but no good can come from it. I read that mountain-truck story and thought it very helpful. I was in a car accident recently and something broke under ute and it jumped around the road before sliding sideways and flying over bank. I called for God to help me and send His angels to protect me. I knew my husband would hate me being paralysed. End result I went home from hospital that evening with no brakes but lots of bruises. I thank Heavenly Father for the way my prayer was answered. Ambulances, fire brigade, state emergency services and police were there and the first person on scene was an off duty nurse. Talk about blessings. Then neighbours and family brought casseroles and sweets and said prayers on my behalf. An outpouring of love and service.

But Emily 2020 is a good year...when we 'stay' we don't progress. God has a better way, like the people of Alma. What are we focussed on right now? 2020 is probably a year that God hears from more of His children. These events bring the Savior's return closer...so that there will not be a 2019 again for you.

I believe God provides deliverance at the time that will be most advantageous for His Work of Salvation, when the most people (in the long run) will be brought to Him through that act of deliverance. Also, it seems to me that sometimes (or in some WAYS) Heavenly Father "delivers" the righteous - those who are seeking to Hear Him, at least - BEFORE the bondage/troubles come (i.e. Nephi warned to leave before Lamanites got him; King Mosiah I warned to leave; Alma's group, etc.) By following the guidance of prophets and apostles, many people have been "delivered" from some of the current troubles by having sufficient food storage, savings, healthy family relationships, Come Follow Me church-at-home habits, etc. But those who either aren't listening, or are being too over-zealous in their own desires, or are full of iniquity, or maybe even those who are ignorant to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost and need an experience like bondage to bring them TO the Lord are allowed to endure the bondage/troubles for a while first, before receiving their deliverance (i.e. Zeniff's group + descendents, etc.) Again, the deliverance comes when (a) those involved TURN TOWARD the Lord, and (b) the deliverance will bring the most people into His Fold. We can bear our burdens with patience, and even joy!, as we continue to HEAR HIM. He will strengthen our backs that we won't need to feel these burdens on our backs, while we await the perfect time for our full deliverance from this isolation (which will actually make me sad, a little, because I've loved this time with a little simpler life and more focus on my immediate family! ) Love these lessons! So glad my friend got me interested in Don't Miss This!

I want to clap in church too! Here are my thoughts on it. I think that we do not because the spirit touches us all differently and I might be enduring to the end of a talk someone else might be wanting to clap. It would be sad for some to be clapped for more than another. (that's the fairness and don't want to hurt feelings part of me). While I think that the spirit does speak to me sometimes that I want to jump and cheer, but there is something to be said about quiet reflection. It's hard to hear what the spirit is saying when everyone is focused on applauding. It would also take up a lot of meeting time if we clapped because it takes time to settle back down. My husband is a convert and from the South. He has been to Hallelujah, Amen, praise the Lord, sing and shout meetings. Attending one is on my bucket list.

The people of Limhi did not stand as a witness of anything. They had to be reminded by Alma that God had delivered them (Mosiah 25:15-16). The people of Limhi felt like they did it themselves. This is the difference between a covenant people, and a non-covenant people. Mormon included this so that we would know we should rely on God, like Alma's people, and not lean on the arm of flesh, like Limhi's people; I think this is what these scriptures are teaching.
@seudogg
@seudogg 4 года назад
I disagree with your assumption. In Mosiah 25:16 where Alma exhorts the people of Limhi to remember that God had delivered them does not equate to them “feeling like they did it themselves”. In fact, much of Mosiah 21 supports that they more than likely felt the opposite - that "God had delivered them". v. 13 - they humble themselves in carrying their burdens v. 14 - they humble themselves before God and cried unto him deliverance vv. 17- they care for the widows and fatherless - which to me is an example of "bear one another's burdens" - Mosiah 18:9 vv. 31-32 - they made a covenant to serve God and keep his commandments vv. 33-35 - they were desirous to be baptized and (at this point in time) would've joined the people of Alma if they could v. 36 - "All [their] study" was on how to deliver themselves out of bondage

@@seudogg I think Mormon put these two stories here to show us the difference between covenant people, and non-covenant people - there is power in covenants, and waiting on the Lord.
@seudogg
@seudogg 4 года назад
@Jim McKinney I certainly do believe that we are better off making covenants with the Lord early like the people of Alma did. On the same note, reading these stories side-by-side has also taught me that as long as we have breath, it is never too late to make those covenants as both groups reached their desired destination. We can get caught up in comparing the two stories and if it came down to us having to choose one or the other to be our path we would likely choose the one of the people of Alma (and Chapter 21 tells us that even the people of Limhi would have gone with them in a re-do), but a miracle is miracle and the delivery of both groups from bondage, although different, were exactly that. I also believe that there is more we can learn by reading these stories than just that one group was the covenant people and the other was not (at one point in time). For me, as I read these chapters this time around, what stood out was parallels of these stories to the Parable of the Prodigal Son. As that parable is told in the Book of Luke, nothing is really mentioned about the road home for the prodigal son, but just that "he [came] to himself" and then his father saw him "a great way off" and ran to meet him. Emily Freeman shares in this video that, unlike most scriptural stories, these chapters focus more on the journey than the miracle/destination, and for me, the story of the people of Limhi depicts what that "road home" might have been like. Reading through Chapter 21 I can see how, in a way, the Lord saw them "a great way off", meeting them (as Emily likes to put it) "where they were" and "how they were" and then provided a way for them to escape through the counsel of an "unprofitable servant (22:4)", Gideon. Then, when they arrived in Zarahemla, like the Prodigal Son, they were accepted as Nephites (as brothers and sisters) and not servants. In the April Conference of 2002, Elder Holland shared a talk about the "Other Prodigal Son", which is in reference to the son who stayed with his Father in the Parable. Like this son, the people of Alma had made covenants to be with God by obedience to His commandments. However, as it says in Mosiah 23:21, "... the Lord saw fit to... [try] their patience"; so they still had more to learn, just like this obedient son in the Parable. To me, the "other prodigal son", hadn't yet learned what it means to be an "unprofitable servant"( just like those spoken of in the Parable of the Laborers); which is (1) to focus on no more than our duty, (2) not to assume we deserve more than what we've been promised, and (3) to let God be God. Mosiah 23-24 tells of how the trials the people of Alma endured in the Land of Helam enabled them to better "stand as witnesses of God" (like they promised to do (18:9)). They learned to (better?) do their duty and not murmur (by being ruled by the very people they chose against by being baptized) because of their trials and to let God be God. For me, what makes the atonement of Jesus Christ so wonderful is that it is just for "the other prodigal son" or "the covenant people", but everyone; even those who do not love him back. As long as they have breath, they can still "come unto [Him]", and that is what I've learned reading these stories this time around.

I love your comment! But, the people of Amulon never have the prophesies of Abinadi happen to them.(That we can see) Instead they carry out the beatings and burdening like a donkey TO the people of Alma. It is clearly a sign to me that Joseph Smith didn't write this book . It really is true. If you were writing this book you would make the unrepentant suffer the chastening. But really it is part of their repenting for some reason .Limhi's people also suffer but for some reason Amulon's people(the ones who deserve it) do not suffer this way. I LOVE your comment

Catherine Finney from “Answers to Gospel Questions” by Joseph Fielding Smith, volume 3, page 203-204: “ We May conclude that Alma held the priesthood before he, with others, became disturbed with King Noah...If he had authority to baptize, that is evidence that he had been baptized. Therefore...that was not a case of Alma baptizing himself, but merely as a token to the Lord of his humility and full repentance.”
