When my dad was in a horrible car accident and lying in an ICU bed, I was tasked with going to straighten up his apartment for when he went home. I was paralyzed in his apt, and couldn’t think. Music, sure dad had a lot of different music. Country, classical, even hymns didn’t work…..then I found a Primary Song CD….amazing what comfort those children’s voices brought to my heart! That was 20 years ago!

My husband finished his battle with cancer this last week. We had his funeral on Saturday. His one request was that Amazing Grace be sung, and a sweet young lady sang a version that will forever be a part of me. The version is Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone). He was so young with so much to live for, but now his mortal chain are gone and he is free of pain and earthly sorrow. I miss him so much, but when the tears start to fall I hear those words and I feel the peace of an eternal Father. I’m so grateful for the gospel and for this knowledge. This weeks lesson was hard for me, so thank you for the beautiful way you presented it. “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” So keep on Barney Fifeing it up. 😊

Thank you for calling attention to the attachment of nursing mothers to their infants! A nursing mom cannot forget her child - not just because she loves it, but that her body is tuned to meet its needs, even in the absence of her baby. ‘Beautiful imagery that gets passed over by those who don’t understand it. Thank you!

I want to thank you for, not just this episode, every episode I've listened to for the past couple of years. I am so grateful for the effort you put into researching guests who share knowledge that the average Christian may never learn without your podcast. I once brought an agnostic friend to Church with me. He happened to have Ph.D. in literature. He looked at the hymns and asked, "What does all this mean? It makes no sense!" At the time I was so flabbergasted that I couldn't reply. Later, I thought, "He teaches poetry. If he can't understand the beautiful expressions in the hymns, he shouldn't be teaching poetry. The hymns are poems set to music." Again. Thank you, to all of you. You make my days more worthwhile and my study of the scriptures much more enlightening.

It is a scientific fact that, when people sing in tune together, their hearts beat at the same pace/rate. An incredible concept.

I love this and how they’re talking about how important the music is especially in our meetings. As a former ward music director, I remember learning the valuable lesson from a stake music chairman when she told us that you should never cut the music short just because the meeting is running long. You should never sacrifice the music because someone has overspoken or for some reason delayed the ending of the meeting. Hymns are canonized in our church and they are just as important as the spoken word. Really happy to see that this message continues.

I remember when they first added music to the temple film … it made so much difference to me in how I felt about it. Music is a beautiful part of worship.

This is my third time through this podcast, as Dr. Hopkin speaks about songs in modern temple worship my mind caught hold that we do have songs or hymns today. Many of our temples we first go to the chapel were sacred music is played. Those few minutes as I sit with my sweet heart are often the most satisfying moments for us. Our hearts turn more fully to the blessings of the temple, of the wonders of God's love for us. Because hymns are so calming I have placed a small hymnal into each of our 72 hour grab and go bags we carry in the cars as well as the larger household kit. Each child's car has such a kit in their car and they take that kit as they marry and move starting their married life. Peace comes as we sing the songs of redeeming love of God.

My teenage sister shares a lot of remarks from Hank which show that Hank knows about mental health and being gentle with each other and ourselves and learning truth about our emotional lives etc., which I know, because of my past experience, must come in some way from Hank's own experience. People who really identify with that stuff and can say it that way, and who keep their eyes open to share the quotes and thoughts from others that also teach and help with that, really only can do it that way because they have lived it. Thanks for mentioning something about that here, Hank. I recognize this, as I say, because I also know what Hank means by dark times. And I've been a musician my whole life, and I must say, there are times when I've tried to go about life in a less musical way and assume that the music is more of a nice aside to life, the parsley on the plate, but the Lord brings me back to realizing it's a gift He gave me that I could go through this life with music as one of my most familiar friends, and He has been willing to speak to me quite often through music--so if I have been trying to hear Him through some other medium, sometimes He has to show me that I'm making it too hard :) --He was willing to just make it easy on me and use the music.

I listen to your podcast every week. I feel like a fly on the wall listening to very knowledgeable people talk about very sacred things.I teach 10 year olds in Primary. They get so silly sometimes and don’t focus on what is important. I have been praying all week for a way to make the Psalms seem important in their lives. John, your story about the Hanoi Hilton I feel like it was an answer to my prayers. I can’t wait every to see what wonderful things you have to say. Thank you! Karen Burningham

Love the idea of Psalms as a type of hymnbook and as we sing we all worship in unity. I often feel the Spirit most strongly when singing. Most of my reading and worship is done silently but singing and hearing I add more of my senses so I am that much more involved. I do sometimes pray verbally but it's just my fumbling words, not the beautiful prose of the lyricist. Hymn 112 "Never can I repay thee, Lord. But I can love thee. Thy pure word, Hath it not been my one delight, My joy by day, my dream by night? Then let my lips proclaim it still, And all my life reflect thy will." How can you sing that without weeping? Sooo many more examples.

My parents and I have been quoting back and forth about being "translated correctly" since that episode. You and Hank make the scriptures much more accessible and approachable with both of your insights and your wonderful guests! Thank you so much for all you both do!

I have been a poet of sorts from my youth and as a 73 year old I have written many poems. This podcast inspired me to go back and look at my poetry to see if any of them reflect a psalm-ish presentation. It was wonderful to find a few! Wow! I write poetry to express my feelings. But to express the feelings of my heart to God is indeed a humbling thing. Thank you for sharing the reasons for the psalms and the purposes of the psalms. I loved this.

If we’re not one we’re not Christ’s according to the scriptures. Three times in each sacrament meeting we can show that we’re His children and that we’re one. Then one chosen from among us speaks for us all in invoking God’s blessing and his presence. We must never be afraid or ashamed to sing with our whole hearts-how united do we wish to be? How much one of God’s children?

Yes the closing hymn is closing a sacred service but I would definitely never see it as an end to that experience. I see the closing prayer and hymn the prayer that extends that experience into our everyday, it carries us into whatever comes next in our week. Zion united inviting the Lord to be with us in the week to come.

I had an experience: Nov 2018 I just got off the phone with a friend and shared my experience with SS the last three weeks. I’ve been to three different wards all teaching the same lesson (can’t recall which number). The first Sunday when the scripture about we are engraven in His hands-okay I just searched for a scripture about image palms of his hands to share it’s not there. Nonetheless, I heard it three weeks in a row and each week it progressed within my mind: First week: it was words nothing too spectacular except that they were remembered. Second week: I saw Him looking at me. He was seeing me in the palms of His hands. The Savior was looking at me-which also means I was looking at Him! Third week: in the palms of His hands was not only me but there was my complete life’s story; my all; my everything . . . It was/is a beautiful progression. If any of you know the scripture that this came from please share for I am unable to locate it. Dec, Back in my home ward: Well someone heard my request😉. Not last Sunday but the Sunday before in Relief Society there were handouts with a baggy of chocolates😍. Isaiah 49:15&16 I will not forget thee . . . I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands. It’s the size of one of those pass-along cards. I have no clue where the little glass frame came from. It was in my dresser when I unpacked last month. Father provides! Thursday night we had a Progressive Dinner. At the last house I happened to be walking next to the Sister who gave the lesson and did the handouts. By the way the lesson wasn’t connected to the scripture at all. I shared my experience with the scripture-with a cracky voice-and how I couldn’t find the scripture anywhere. She had tears flowing down her face as she thanked me for sharing. That’s the end of that experience. Now a question: From about the 45 min mark to the end-the explanations of hand gestures Shon is sharing: do you see the temple as I do???

John, that was a great impersonation of Don Knotts 😂🤪 A great lesson. I have a Jewish Bible that lists the Psalms (Tehillim) in this way; Book 1 - Deliverance Songs, Psalms 1:1 - 41:14, Book 2 - Divine Judgement, Psalms 42:1 - 72:20, Book 3 - National Hymns of Y'hudah, Psalms 73:1 - 89:53, Book 4 - God's Great Kingdom, Psalms 90:1 - 106:48, Book 5 - Songs of Praise and Thanksgiving, Psalms 107:1 - 150:6. I love how the Jewish Study Bible reads differently to the King James Version Bible and I love using them together. I find that the JSB sheds more light on verses that are difficult to understand in the KJV. Thank you Hank, John and Shon. 😊❤️🙏🇦🇺🐨

I loved the comments about the power of music for worship, and glad you also mentioned the power of other kinds of music (movie scores, etc.). It’s probably safe to say that the original singers of Psalms were not singing in 4 part harmony in the Welsh style that we’re familiar with in church, let alone being accompanied by an organ or piano. Do you have insights about the musical style(s) that accompanied the Psalms originally, and how we can be open to what may be a powerful, moving style for people coming from other cultures in our worldwide church? Can we learn to appreciate and allow space for those other musical styles in our worship services, or should we assume that the music of heaven is just like that found in our hymn book or as performed by the Tabernacle Choir?

Jesus loved the Psalms because they define Him as God. Jesus loves the fact that He is stated as the Priest by the order of the Melchizedek. Psalm 110:4. Also, the Psalm shows He is our creator, Psalm 148:5 For He commanded and they were created, He also established them forever and ever. God will never be shaken, Psalm 112:6 Surely, He will never be shaken, the righteousness will be in everlasting righteousness. The Eternity of God, Psalm 90: 1-2 Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world everlasting to everlasting, You are God!!! God is much more than a mere man!
