We sang a bowdlerized version of this hymn at the secular-humanist Ethical Culture school I attended as a child, with "Every field doth food provide" instead of "God, our maker, doth provide" and "Come, ye thankful people, come" instead of "Come, to God's own temple come." Nothing wrong with the substitution, but the school's practice was inconsistent, since we also had an annual Christmas concert where we sang carols in their unexpurgated versions.
