Comedy Censorship Used to be WORSE with Kliph Nesteroff - Factually! - 245

For as long as there's been comedy, there have been people lamenting that "you can't do comedy anymore". This sentiment feels more prevalent than ever, but is it actual censorship or a shift in our culture? Adam talks with Kliph Nesteroff, a historian of comedy and author of Outrageous: A History of Showbiz and the Culture Wars, about the history of censorship in comedy, and how the idea of audiences being "too sensitive" is propaganda pushed by the very same people who censored comedians in years past. Part of what you have to understand about what Ricky Gervais was saying was that he was in Britain and comedians there are getting arrested for saying some of those things. His view on censorship is more geared to the realities of where he lives, but to broaden it for American appeal he joked (it WAS a joke) that it wouldn't get aired.

Remember when Chris Hardwick was hosting like 5 different TV shows and still recognized as a founder of one of the biggest RU-vid comedy channels? False accusations were made. It must have cost him millions. Michael Richards definitely messed up. But he VANISHED after that. Chris Delia was cancelled. I don’t know all the details. A few years back I remember watching a docu-series on CNN about the history of comedy. At some point they ask the question, “is anything off limits?” A lot of the comedians who were featured in the series said no, save for Craig Ferguson. He was adamant that he doesn’t do rape jakes and that there’s nothing funny about it. One of the parts that still sticks with me is when he goes on to criticize the habit that so many comedians have when they tell a joke that is edgy/offensive and which earns them backlash. They quickly hide behind the first amendment arguing that you’re not allowed to criticize or be mad at them because by doing so you’re infringing on their first amendment rights. I love his retort, “no I’m not. However, you’re telling me that I’m not allowed to criticize or be mad at you is infringing on my first amendment right to call you an asshole when I feel like you’re being an asshole.” (Chef’s kiss)

People consistently misinterpret (intentionally, I'm sure, at least for some of them) the 1st amendment all over the place...like, are you literally incarcerated because of what you said?? If not, it's very likely that the 1st amendment is not relevant to your argument. Also, above and beyond that fact, if your only defense for something you said is that it isn't literally _ILLEGAL_ to say it -- get some better material! Like, damn...
@electrified0

The thing that bothers me the most is that many comedians use "cancel culture" as an excuse to not be funny. They get on stage and give their TedX style speech seeking applause rather than laughter. It's a shame to see legendary comedians put a ceiling on their talent, knowing they're going to sit in the comfort of easy applause by playing the victim and crying about the narrowing walls of comedy instead of actually using their talent and expanding them like they did in their prime.

Netflix choosing not to offer something because they believe it will upset their subscribers and hurt their bottom line is NOT censorship, it's just a business decision. If the government told Netflix that they aren't allowed to offer something, THAT is censorship. Most people complaining about "censorship" are actually just complaining about other people not liking what they are saying and not wanting to engage with them anymore.
@camipco

I think this is partly true, and I agree the distinction is important. But content decisions made by private companies have a serious effect on what is available in the public sphere. Like imagine if netflix and disney suddenly both removed all their content with lgtbq characters / actors? that would sure have a censoring effect on the availability of media...

@@camipco"I think this is partly true". Its 100% true. Government throwing you in jail AND confiscating your books AND forbidding discussion is Legal Censorship. That others use the word privately, like a broadcast tv content reviewer, doesn't change the legal definition, which, being legal, is always actual censorship. The Internet= more freedom than anyone can use. The "Free Speech" screechers just want to avoid responsibility for things like being wrong on covid being no big deal, the insurrection, iraq. It's exactly what he said, the reason they keep claiming censorship and crying cancel culture in their specials is cause the audience keeps agreeing, because they're entreching themselves in an audience that's more and more conservative and bigoted each time. I think Dave Chappelle is a good example of this. I don't know if Chappelle understands that he's stirring very close to cater to the same people that made him leave comedy before. Like, yes cater to transphobes and the racists will come. It makes me feel sad for him if he's not noticing the clear shift

But then Burr was all pissed about the audience not laughing at his Chinese joke. Dude, it's not their job to laugh at your jokes. You're the professional. It's your job. I could push back against the idea that suppressing bigotry is censorship, certainly up to a point anyway. Free-speech, as originally premised by JS Mill, was about protecting the good-faith debate of ideas that are subject to rational scrutiny. Bigotry is more in the class of ideas that things like "threats of violence" or "political propaganda" belong to. Bigotry doesn't exist in the world of logical propositions to be fairly scrutinized by reason, it is meant to subvert that exact process and sow irrational hatred and discrimination.

About the Blackface part. Netflix also remove an episode of Community that had an asian Character (Chang) painting his face completely black to look like a Drow. Within the context it was clear it was not okay and the joke was on this doofus doing this insane thing because we've known Chang for 2 seasons and all know he's insane.
@camipco
@camipco 6 месяцев назад
It's true that there are instances where the rule is clumsily applied. But it's a mistake to conclude from that the rule is bad. The idea of removing all the blackface episodes of all shows from your platform is probably a good one. And yeah, in doing that you hit some episodes that are arguably not exactly doing blackface, or doing it to make a good point or whatever. But the question is which side of the line are you more willing to risk. Is it worth it to take down some good episodes to avoid having a bunch of a blazonly racist trope on your platform? Or is it worth keeping some of that blazon racism around to keep the Drow episode? And it's impossible to calibrate that precisely to please everyone, and it's definitely worth having the conversation. But a lot of the discourse about this is to suggest that because they (maybe) got it wrong in this or that instance, that means the entire project of trying to have less racism in comedy should be thrown out.

That's normal, sloppy, individual missteps. This is to be expected precisely because there's no massive demands for censorship with rules and a single committee. The real truth that nobody wants to articulate these days is that most comedians are self-important, uninteresting, and venal; mediocre people get into comedy because it's slightly easier than some other routes to show business and because they imagine they're a generational voice like Bruce or Carlin--but of course, they're not, they're Tim from Topeka. Fantastic discussion, I loved it. I can't agree that eliminating abusive language is censorship because the intent is a reduction in harm. I think it's necessary to silence bigots etc. The phrases that comes to mind are "absolute tolerance will always lead to intolerance" and "silence only helps the oppressor". Reasonable people have to work against bigotry and intolerance or else it will continue to exist and while that may look like censorship it's just not the same thing. I also think it's important to delineate the difference in order to call out bad actors.

One could argue that any censorship is harm reduction: "It hurts national morale to criticize the gov't" "It hurts the church's outreach to lost souls when you criticize the church" Rather than play word games, or talking about the vibes of a specific word, it's better to say "Correct, it is censorship, b/c I feel that this type of speech is bad for this reason." Now you have taken a stand, and others must either agree or disagree. Especially in the face of those who try to weasel their way into saying the same thing from their perspective.

They go through the prime of their careers in that aftermath where lots of comedians could swear or curse or say pretty much anything they wanted along those lines. Guy Aoki that debated Sarah Silverman's wasn't the best person to debate her on that specific joke. He was dismissive, whereas if he were a comic he might have emphasized how interchangeable it was with other slurs and wasn't a strong premise and the stakes felt cheap in it's modularity like an opener about Shelbyville if you were in Springfield. This is a decent topic, and while the guest has views that are absolutely batshit to me scattered throughout they remained interesting and suspiciously sane for someone who willingly watches old 'reality TV'. I mean, I could see watching it to 'solve' it, understand how the show's creators handled the participants in such a way that they got the show that they wanted, and then could pretend was 'real', but yikes. I have a huge soft spot for old comedies, I think most cinema ages poorly (lots of exceptions I'm sure, but I don't love old drama generally), but good comedy is by definition timeless. In 1000 years people will still watch Charlie Chaplin, and very little of what is being made now will be watched, he just did the slapstick stuff really well. I'm sure lots of bad comedy was made that aged terribly, but the best stuff ages well and will continue to age well.

Personally, I have to be in a certain mood to watch or listen to comedians. If I don't like the type of jokes that any particular comedian tells, I just don't watch them, but I don't feel offended by them. If someone is offended by something that someone else says, that is their choice to take offense. It reminds me of how people a few decades ago would get offended or bothered by what they see on TV while sitting there with a remote in their hand and instead of just changing the channel to watch something else, they have to complain and try to get that program censored so that no one else can enjoy it. It's the same as someone making rude comments about a post they don't like instead of just ignoring it and moving onto the next post. We choose what we want to get offended with. It's fine to give a critical opinion of something, but at the same time, if it bothers you, you don't have to watch it.

I’d say it’s ironic that the comedians like Louis CK, Seinfeld, Gervais, even Chapelle, were either totally milquetoast, or finding the closest line they could to being “dangerous” and still feeding off the stereotypes of hegemonic culture, and often affirming the hierarchies of that culture. They might want to think they were transgressive, but let’s face it, if your audience is made up of half the American population, you’re just not that transgressive. All the people who were “offended” by your truth-telling were overly vocal weirdos and not representative of the actual place your culture is at. You’re mainstream. The problem is that the prejudices and biases these comedians used to feed off of aren’t as popular any more. That’s all. They’re getting old.

They’re getting old and they’ve also surrounded themselves in their money bubbles. Having a lot of money changes the way a person thinks, the people they surround themselves with, the places they go etc. and it turns into an echo chamber.

Although, interestingly, Louis CK has never had much of a reckoning around the content of his jokes. In fact, back before we found out about The Thing, he was often cited as an example of how you could address sensitive topics effectively without punching down. I think he does talk about it some in his comeback thing, but honestly that was mostly so dull I don't remember much of it. But he does accept at least some of the 'cancelling' was legitimate, and while he equivocates, he admits what he did was gross.

I'm a little late to the party, but I find myself listening to a fair number of center left and center right videos. It's interesting to hear the same battlegrounds from the two different perspectives, namely college campuses around the 44 minute mark. It feels as though the right claims the left has captured these institutions, and will always send people to protest a speaker. Claiming every speaker for the right is bigoted, as they seem to in this video, feels like it takes for granted a heavy leftward lean of many institutions.

I think Sarah Silverman's joke was and is funny and she was right that it is obviously self deprecating and implicitly anti-racist, but Aoki was right that it legitimizes slurs. I think what happened is once your audience gets big enough, your ability to effectively do satire ends. In the age of social media, satire is a super dangerous tool. If you made the same joke today, millions of people would see it who are too dumb to understand that it is obviously self deprecating and implicitly anti-racist, so basically the only thing left that the joke could possibly do is make it cool and funny to use slurs for Chinese people.

Her joke was for her audience, at that time. A core element of humor is context and contradiction. Dad says he's going to work but he's wearing a football helmet, so the kids laugh. Same with Sarah: her audience is hip and more aware. Everyone in the room is not a racist, including her. So the absurdity of her dating a black guy and saying racist things is the core of the joke + the idea had been suppressed during Reagan-Bush. Her cohort knew this was b s., so its not a surprise some brought the issue out into the open. Its a great joke in its time & place and that's a big part of humour.

Most annoying censorship is the offending of a few who knew it was going to be said and still went/watched/listened to the show, and the result is the many many many who did not interpret it to be offensive are now denied to make their own decision to go/watch/listen to the show or performer again.

@@gcharny8022 I think everyone understands that New Zealand is a different country to the USA. And yeah, the history of the treatment of Māori people isn't exactly the same and in many ways is better than the treatment of indigenous people in many other countries. But still fundamentally they are an oppressed group by white settlers, with higher rates of incarceration, poverty, a history of discriminatory laws and practices. As for the comparison to statehood, my understanding is the Māori have some relatively small number seats in the New Zealand legislature, but they aren't self-governing. (I just googled it, Māori currently hold 15/120 seats, which is less than the 16% of the population they make up, but yes, way more than Native Americans in the US Congress), Like Māori are still a minority in most of New Zealand, right? Is there a part of New Zealand where Māori have majority political control?

12:15 It generally wasn't a bunch of people who wrote letters, it was usually a small number of people who wrote and copied a large number of letters. One time, Howard Stern got 100+k plus letters about him sent to the FCC, written by six people. When Michael Powell, the head of the FCC and son of Colin Powell, was asked about it, he said, "I don't care about how many people are complaining". So, it tended to be less about offending Americans' sensibilities and more about a small number of Chads and Karens who want you to do what they say. These same people could have heard Tim Allen say the N-word in the mid-60s and would have been fine with it.
