Still love The Young Ones.. always loved the dysfunctional, mad, imaginative and surreal weirdness of the show. Alexei- the unattended firehose- I liked as well. Fond memories. R.I.P. The People's Poet..
11:30 -- Sounds like Posner is suggesting that Sayle didn't really fit into the YOs. He's entitled to his opinion, of course, but I think that Sayle was a wonderful compliment to the show. It's sort of like a mango with salt, lime and chili powder -- I've had this in Chicago at various Mexican street festivals. It doesn't sound like it would be good but it's surprisingly tasty.
Loads of screaming, lots of things getting smashed, a barrage of insults, loads of slapstick, and then some music on top of that. Hard not to make a funny show out of all those elements.
I'm gonna stick up Alexei Sayle here. He can be very funny and quite acute (the sketch about Oscar wilde on Alexei Sayles merry go round was hilarious ) but I think its true they didn't really know what to do with him in the young ones and he does stick out. I don't think his characters in young ones were very well drawn. He would often come on, muck around for a bit (not being funny) then he would do his bit of stand up, which could be funny, then he would be flying off again!
