My son is a Sci-Fi geek and obsessed with Red Dwarf, a couple of years back he managed Chris and Danny's booth at Liverpool Comic Con, when it was all over they took some selfies with him, My son is on the autism spectrum, they are the only photos I have with him smiling it's the happiest I've ever seen him. It was probably nothing to Chris and Danny but those pictures are so special to me.
My boy is too (on the spectrum). He loves RD of course, but also a huge Fadder Ted fan. A few years back we met Ardal O'Hanlan after his stand up show, I took a photo with my son, who made a joke about being close or far away in the photo, Ardal laughed (like it was the first time anyone had quoted it to him) he was great.
On facebook, their was a photo of a banana taking suggestively, and the caption was "What does this look like?" and best comment was "A small off duty Czechoslovakian traffic warden."
I might be crazy but I don't care which seasons were better or worse, I will watch and watch anything Red Dwarf as long as the original 4 dudes are in it.
Oh, the show's DEFINITELY better when you have Cat, Lister, Rimmer, and Kryten in it. That seems to be the right character balance there. The Holly's are a question mark -- Kochanski is NOT. Most people did not care for the way she was written even if they had no personal animosity towards Chloe Annett or Clare Grogan. Kochanski was NOT designed to be a series regular and the chemistry never worked well with women beyond Holly and even with Holly it's a toss-up for some who's better.
While I understand what you mean...(I am always incredibly excited when they make more of it and I do watch it) I really would like to see Rob Grant return....or, feel that it needed Rob Grant. Does anybody know what happened?....why did Rob Grant leave?
Depression is a harsh reality for many. I suffered myself for 25+ years before getting to the bottom of it. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 40 years old, but my neurologist is certain that I've had it since I was 16. Depression is a common symptom of MS. I was also diagnosed with ADHD a year later. Most would probably lose it when receiving diagnosis like these. But I was elated! I had the answer to my mental health issue. Since then I've met my now fiancee, and my depression has all but gone. Just remember that there's always light at the end of every tunnel.
Chris Barrie is an amazing voice talent. There are Red Dvvarf audiobooks vvhere he does all the characters voices spot on & it feels like you're reallygetting to listen to a forgotten episode
Still get tingles when Dave emerges from stasis, and Holly says it is now safe in that understated way. Dave's universe has just changed forever, and he's blissfully unaware. For him, just a second before the ship was full of life. Just really really clever sci-fi.
This was the funniest sitcom in the history of British television , and the best quality of science fiction, second only to Doctor Who. I watched every... single... episode. I was very sad when Louisiana Public Broadcasting stopped giving me this escape from the pain and loneliness of my empty and unloved life. The late 90's were a very difficult time for me: totally alone in myself, divorced from my best friend, and even my former business partner. Lister and Rimmer were the two halves of ME- the modern, male: the lone science nerd, the failed, military, authoritarian, and even the self-absorbed, survivor cat, the entitled and sex-starved princess too- all of me floating on a lonely rock in space after a long night shift at hard labor. I was, am, and will ALWAYS BE- a loyal Smeghead! Thanks to the BBC and ALL of these great actors and writers. You made my life bearable at a time when any sane man might have jumped out of a 13th floor window. God Bless you!
At least once per year! My 13 year old daughter also requests to have a RD night several times per year. We pic a series to start from, get cinema style snacks and binge watch until one of us falls asleep or pukes from all the snacks.
My daughter and I do the same (no puking though!). We've watched it over and over for years and she is a huge fan. I bought her a London Jets t shirt a few months ago & it's now her favourite shirt.
Absolute comedy gold, I have converted every episode in mp3 format so can listen to it in the car. So if you see some old smeg head driving around laughing his head off... it'll be me
I'm glad Norman Lovett insisted that Holly be a head on screen instead of just a voice. Holly has become iconic as just a head, whether it's Norman Lovett or Hattie Hayridge. People even pretend to be Holly by wearing black polo neck jumpers and standing against a black background.
Pass The Butter Robot she wasn't bad, Norman Lovett was much better though. The way he delivered his lines was brilliant. It's a shame he left when he did.
The movie was made several years ago and was so bad I watched it once and gave my copy away. Basically it was the same storyline as The League of Gentleman movie which was also bad. Both excellent comedy series that are amongst my top 5 but the movies were terrible.
@@cunning-stunt Are you talking about "Back To Earth"? Because that was a miniseries shown on the Dave network in 2009, not a movie. It was made to test the waters for a TV revival after the plans for the Red Dwarf film described in this documentary fell apart completely. BtE wasn't great but it was successful enough for Dave to make 4 more seasons of Red Dwarf with the latest (Series XIII) being filmed as we speak.
I'm re-watching Red Dwarf, marathon style, paused it a S03 E02, came to youtube for something wholly different and ended up watching this entire thing. Just thought that was weird enough for a mention, back to the marathon.
I can't count how many times I have run through the entire series. Luckily, two more seasons are heading our way. If they're anything like Season X, than we are in for a treat!
i'm American and i watched every episode of Red Dwarf i could et my hands on over here in the states... David Lister has been one of the biggest influences in my life ... without even meaning him to be .. i just noticed after 3 decades that a lot of my personality matches Lister's. it wasnt like i purposely did it or anything .. it just happened. and i am glad it did Lister is a great role model .. he may not be spiffy or have perfect manners .. but he is brave courageous kind honest and an all around good bloke to have to look up to. Thank you Craig, Doug and Grant for giving me a wonderful show and wonderful characters to lift me up in the down times in my life.
I think the best thing about Red Dwarf is the relationship (odd-couple-y) between Rimer and Lister. The best evidence of this is 'Marooned'. If they just didn't have that on-off bro-mance relationship, it would be so dull.
Which is doubly fitting to the premise of the show since the actors don't like each other even in real life. Holly activated Rimmer mainly to give Lister a hard time and vise versa, thus giving Lister something to live for. The fact that the actors themselves don't get along ended up giving it that extra level of believably it deserved.
heres an interesting fact, the family guy episode with stewie and brian locked in a bank vault over a weekend was inspired by marooned, the seth whathisname guy openly admitted it as an insperation as a fan in an interview
red dwarf is something i was exposed to at a very young age by my dad, he had all the episodes up to series 7 recorded on vhs, as well as owning a couple of the officially released tapes. half of the recorded vhs have been worn down and had to be thrown out (series 2, 3 and 5), which admittedly is probably my fault lol but im working on recording my own now to fill in the blanks as it is my favourite way to watch the show (feels like how it was MEANT to be seen) by comparison to many red dwarf fans, im quite young at (almost) 23 but red dwarf really means the world to me. i always find myself coming back to it, even knowing the storyline and jokes word for word by now, it brings me a huge sense of comfort. it reminds me of being a kid sitting infront of my big crt tv in my bedroom in the 2000s and forcing any friend who came over to watch it with me. im glad to have been raised on such an excellent show, i really wouldnt have it any other way
27:38 "The rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated" great Mark Twain quote. I think Craig Charles' poetry is the only poetry that I have ever really appreciated. It was just so gritty a real and genuinely had something to say. I remember seeing him performing his poems on TV in the early 80s. I think it was also the first time I heard the term "Scouser".
Best smegging show ever watched this show the first with my dad and showed it to my cousin shortly after. I cried after hearing it was cancelled glad it came back even though it was not showing in my area so I bought it on dvd still hold my cigarettes in my ear
I met Danny john-jules at the Excel during a martial arts conversation. He was at his own stall, signing photos of his various rolls. I was checking out some training knives, when by accident I ended up standing next to him - on his side of his stall. We just looked at each other for a few seconds, which I broke the silence by saying one word: FISH.......!
One of the best series to ever be made in the world, and what makes it so great is the cast is made of individuals from all around the light entertainment industry mixed with writers/producers/director of great comedy series
I'M IN AMERICA. WHEN WE GOT PBS STATION TO SEE RED DWARF HERE IN THE U.S.A. IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES AND THE WORSE OF TIMES...THE BEST WAS BRITISH COMEDY IN OUR HOME...THE WORST WAS NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE THE LAST 2 YEARS OF RED DRAWF. THANK GOD FOR VIDEOS...TROUBLE WAS, AFTER WATCHING THE BEST BRITISH COMEDIES (RED DWARF, TRACY ULMAN, AND THEN ABFAB) AMERICAN COMEDIES CANNOT COMPETE. THANK GOD FOR VIDEOS ONCE AGAIN...^-^...'IS IT JUST?ME THAT ALWAYS!USES ALL CAPS'...^-^...GOD SAVE YOUR GLORIOUS QUEEN ELIZABETH II...
good to know Danny has always been late. I interviewed him and a few other cast members a few years ago and he was the only one late to that too lol and he answered his phone halfway through the interview. Still worth it though, i was glad to talk to Chris Barrie and he did his Kenneth Williams impersonation for me. Legends.
IF......IF there was ever a Red Dwarf movie no fucking recasting. Nobody can be these people, except these actors. Had they learned nothing from the us pilot? You have magic, don't let it out.
That's why the movie was never made as one of the bigger companies that were interested wanted a recast with big name American actors then they said famous Brits and made the idiotic mistake of saying Hugh Lawrie could play Lister
I just hate in general when some company takes an established show, and tries to redo it with new actors as a movie. In general, that's a bad idea to me. But then when it's something that's from the uk, it makes me go wtf. Like if they had said lets do black adder as an american version, no...... fawlty towers? no.... Come up with new ideas folks.
Sanford &Son isn't exactly a remake, Galton and Simpson just took the idea of a father and son and then wrote it around the Black American pair. There are no remade episodes at all. Which is why it works so well. 'Porridge' less well and 'Dad's Army' was total flop. 'Dear John' wasn't so bad, although I'm glad the US version of 'Only Fools' never happened (Well the excellent French and Saunders sets of such a thing with Matt Lucas as an American Del Boy not withstanding) The American version of 'To the Manor Born' was interesting, as they reset the whole thing in the 20s and made DeVere American, but it sort of worked. While the American version of 'Being Human' was more faithful to the original idea, and didn't suffer from the censorship we have to put up with in the UK these days (Red Dwarf would can't be shown unedited on free to air TV, and even classic Doctor Who's are out and they were made as kids shows) Of there has been the reverse version, 'Brighton Bells' a British remake of 'The Golden Girls'. While 'Live on Mars' was based on a script that was ripped off and the original was made in the US. Although that is all very confusing indeed.
Believe it or not but Madonna is a massive Smeg Head! She once said that replacing the original cast in a movie would be ridiculous. Thanx Madge, I agree.
Moondog954: I love series XII so far, after all these years it's still brilliant. Most TV shows are rubbish by now, if they're even still going after so long. I can't wait to see Holly again. He might be older, but who isn't?
I actually thought series XII was one of the all-time best (with the exception of one particular episode...) Which was kind of surprising, as I also thought series XI was pretty flawed.
I was an American kid living in England when I first saw this show and I felt so smegging smug to have discovered something so cool my fellow 'muricans knew nothing about. Still do, actually. This show is tits!
+smecking Then let me show you something. If something is tits-it's naff/bunk/rubbish. But if something is the tits-then it is awesome. Hope you understand :-)Glad you enjoyed!
I remember in the early 90s flipping through the channels during commercials of SNL, and discovering both Red Dwarf and Black Adder on PBS (when SNL was actually funny) and being instantly hooked on both.
They never released a film "officially" no. However, series 8 when edited together works as a film as it's one long continual plot. Same can be said about Back To Earth.
It's so great cause it's a top quality sitcom AND a fairly serious sci-fi show that takes the science somewhat seriously. The science isn't a vehicle for the comedy - they are equal partners.
I'm American, grew up watching this show in the mid-90s, it aired Friday or Saturday nights on our public television channel. Loved coming home from whatever teenage nonsense I was up to and catching this, was a highlight of my weekend.
This is one of the gems one would find on PBS in the 90s here in America and I dare anyone to describe the show to a first time viewer its wild and fantastic
I love that smeg. I'm working at a particle accelerator in California this week, and I've just watched all of the first 7 seasons while doing some x-ray spectroscopy.
and now, in 2016, we have series 11! FUCKING YEA SMEG HEADS! and it is everything it was and more! classic comedy and atmosphere is back! LOVING the new series.
i remember when i first found some old Red Dwarf episodes on PBS. after just seeing that 1 episode i ended up setting my VCR to record what i could because i couldnt always stay up that late lol
Obsessed with Red Dwarf when I was a kid. Craig Charles is a fantastic radio DJ now. I find him incredibly watchable/listenable Didn't know he started off as a poet but Liverpool of the 80's, there was a lot to be political about
The best part of this show was that it had so many springboards for new and amazing episodes. You almost never got the same thing twice and even when you did, it was even more amazing the 2nd time around. I don't think I've ever been as much of a fan of any television show, they way I am with Red Dwarf.
My dad taped every episode from PBS. Antique Road Show, Red Green Show then Red Dwarf. Every weekend was chocolate malts and a few episodes. We still do it to this day
They did tell a whopping lie though. They say that Norman Lovett left red dwarf because he moved a ways away and didn't want to commute. However, it's a well known fact that Norman wanted more money to play the part and they couldn't come to an agreement.
It's not a lie exactly... Norman moved away and didn't feel he needed/wanted to be there as much so cut his days in half so they cut his wages which he was upset about and they couldn't come to an agreement so they got Hattie. It wasn't that he wanted more than he was getting, he wanted the same money for half as much work.
Chris Barrie didn't leave Red Dwarf because he was making The Brittas Empire. He had filmed both shows consecutively for years. From what I gathered from interviews, he left because by series 6 he wasn't happy with the some of the production aspects of the show and felt the scripts were becoming much more traditionally sit-com like (the catch-phrase-y "Space Corps Directives" for example,). and that his character was stagnated. He was also wanting to go into production to star in a sitcom, which was not well received, lasted only 2 series, called A Prince Among Men He originally intended to do only two episodes of Series 7 and ended up being in 4 - though two were only cameo appearances. and he enjoyed making them so much that he returned full time for series 8.
I saw an interview with Chris where he eluded a major part of the reason was his character never evolved or changed and was always the target of persecution. This resulted in them inventing Ace Rimmer.
Red Dwarf was a land mark comedy. I personally enjoyed every episode. However, the reruns far and away beat any BS attempt at a movie without the magic of the original cast, crew and staff writers. Thanks for the memories.
Red Dwarf is a great success primarily because of the following. Change any of the following, and Red Dwarf will begin to suffer: - Doug Naylor's writing - Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules, and Robert Llewellyn playing their parts - The fact (whether anyone actually realizes it) that the show is a tribute to the working class In other words, just as the Beatles would no longer be the Beatles if one of them were replaced, in order for Red Dwarf to FULLY be Red Dwarf, Doug Naylor, Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules, and Robert Llewellyn MUST be present and fully involved. Looking forward to more episodes.
The trouble with this line, "just as the Beatles would no longer be the Beatles if one of them were replaced" forgets the fact that a) Richard "Ringo Starr" Starkey replaced Pete Best on Drums just as the group recorded their first record for EMI-Parlophone, and b) Jimmy Nichol was Ringo Starr's stand-in for the first few weeks of the group's Australian tour in 1964.
I used to watch everything that was on public broadcast. I grewup with Doctor Who from the second Doctor on. Blackadder, Red Dwarf, and so many others. I didn't care that the production values on BBC shows was skimpy at best. What they had was some of the best writers and actors out there making these things of beauty! If they had had the money and backing of like Star Treck or something then a huge part of what makes these series great would have not been there!
I was first introduced to Red Dwarf back in 1997 and 1999 and the rest is history with DVDs and revival series and TV movie, I'm a total Smeghead Fanboy to the show and inspired me to make videos on RU-vid and I have Red Dwarf and other shows to thank for it!
Wow, this is so cool. I grow up watching the earlier episodes of Red Dwarf it was the best in it's time and still is, really hope they make the movie with the original cast it would be awesome.
Uroboros if its occasionally standing in front of a black screen reading lines v running all over the place on screen all the time then yes. It is a bit rich.
Actually, they wanted to cut Norman Lovett's salary in half despite doubling his screen time. So it wasn't particularly unfair for him to ask for more money - they were cutting his salary.
My favourite episode. I think I actually had some sort of existential crisis when it was revealed to be a game. Also you have the same surname as me. And the same first initial.
This seems rather dated now, seeing as Dave revived the show. -ps. Always thought Chloe Annette was hot as well as very good in the Kochanski role but Claire Grogan is always a welcome sight and presence too
Its funny, they couldn't fund a film, but they can fund three series afterwards. Probably a blessing in disguise to be honest. I love Red Dwarf from two of the best writer to hit TV
Holy shit! Thanks to this documentary I now know that Barrie was the voice of Reagan in the "Land of Confusion" music video. Tres cool, Mr. Barrie, tres cool. :D
Since this was made there have been additional Red Dwarf series' produced. Now up to 12 series and the feature length episode Red Dwarf: The Promised Land produced in 2019. I plan to import the U.K. DVD when it comes out.
