To be fair to Jimmy, he got caught, he owned up, apologised and all his colleagues absolutely ripped him for years on national tv. It still comes up occasionally but it was pretty intense for years. He took it all on the chin and earned his respect back. Basically, his apology and dealing with the aftermath was literally perfect. An example to anyone who gets caught.

Sorry if someone has said this, but David is actually still in his forties, he's just like my Dad was...David acts older than he true age. It's Lee that's in his fifties. I was surprised that Spencer said that the people look younger on TV in the U.K. because I sort of disagree. I like that British celebrities mostly seem to stay away from plastic surgery. They maybe dye their hair but that's about it. They look like real people and not some kind of impossible "ideal" of youth or beauty. I appreciate the idea that realism isn't a bad thing over there!

27:47 Richard Wilson! The fantastic actor who portrayed Victor Meldrew (clearly his most famous part, but among many other roles) in what is IMO one of the best (if not the best) sitcoms in British TV history _One Foot In The Grave._ It would be so great if you could at least consider a reaction to the full 38 Eps and 4 specials of its 6 season run (there were also 2 Comic Relief specials). Probably the main reason I've always adored it is because of its uniqueness, even among the vast majority of British sitcoms. One might consider it a comedy/drama. It was in a great many parts 'hysterically funny' and (of course, this is Britain) absurd. But it was also extremely full of Pathos. You were either compelled to cry tears of joy or sorrow, sometimes within seconds. I would warn you it had a somewhat slow start, but by season 4 it was attracting close to a 3rd of the population of the UK in viewing figures...for good reasons! Some of which was the great acting by Wilson And Annette Crosby and others. But also in its extremely clever writing by David Renwick. He wrote that Mastermind sketch of _The Two Ronnie's_ I know you've seen. Honestly, It's impossible for me to 'big up' OFITG enough. If anyone's interested in re-visiting it, I'd recommend the Podcast 'One Foot in the Podcast'.

I also recommended already Rising Damp, due to showcasing not only a great ensemble cast, but also arguably one of our greatest ever comedy actors. Re OFITG, you are in my opinion, spot on regarding it's greatness, acting and writing-wise. When it first came out approx 1990, I enjoyed it imensely but thought the protagonist V M was annoying, but in a great way. Now nearing my 60s I think his character is an absolute hero, trying to do the right thing in life, but so many things going wrong due to miss communications and miss reading of situations. An absolute masterpiece of a comedy, very near to the level of Fawlty Towers, but for me, nothing beats that. The only US sitcom that comes near our best ones is possibly Sienfeld, an absolute original idea of a comedy. Frasier is not far behind, but not at a top level.
@carlhartwell7978
@carlhartwell7978 8 месяцев назад
@@gaskellr44 I love Rising Damp and I also love Seinfeld. I totally agree nothing can top Fawlty Towers. But I also want to mention Curb Your Enthusiasm which was written by (and also starred) Larry David, who co wrote Seinfeld. Not sure it was better, I'd have to be on the fence, but it is hysterical in a somewhat 'irreverently British' way I think. I also totally agree with regards to Victor, he had clearly 'been through some stuff', but was at heart a very nice guy. There were points where he made questionable decisions 🤣. But on the whole his heart was usually in the right place, just 'the world' Renwich created for him VERY much seemed to conspire against him! But he was no Basil Fawlty. He wasn't at all a character you laughed at because of only his actions, usually it was because of outside forces. And there are MANY occasions during OFITG where you admire him. And that last ep... 😭

Yes, I quite liked L D playing a characature of himself, which has been doen before and since at varying levels, one of the most famous was Tony hancock as himself in many guises but most known in HHH, but yes L D used all his writing skills that he applied in Seinfled to put himslef in awkward and cringy situs in the show, which I believe included many cameos of actors, again playing charactures of themselves. For me, Seinfled was USs greatest ever sitcom though, as it was an unusual style of turning the ordinary into the extra-ordinary, with great use of serealism of an unusual type. With regard to FT, it would be impossible for me to watch that and then try to watch say Blackadder in that order as the comedy would fall flat in comparrison. A good but overated comedy.@@carlhartwell7978
@carlhartwell7978
@carlhartwell7978 8 месяцев назад
@@gaskellr44 Oh absolutely Hancock's Half Hour was genius. And you rightly point out that he was playing a caricature of himself. But the limitations of the time were _perhaps_ evident when you watch a sitcom like Curb? I find I have to disagree with Blackadder to some degree though, I'd personally put OFITG above it, but it's still very much up there. So many great quotes and Rowan Atkinson's performances along with so many others makes it a gem for me. _'Edmund! Can it be true! That I hold here, in my mortal hand, a nugget of purest green!'_ Tim McInnerny's delivery is ridiculous!🤣 What I would say is that FT only ran for 12 eps, and it never dipped in its genius. Fair enough. But that is unheard of otherwise. For 'mere mortal' sitcoms, there's nothing wrong with Blackadder. For me,, comparing Blackedder to FT is like comparing John Higgins to Ronnie O'Sullivan.

TBH - I think the problem Spencer & Daniel have (when mentioning 'Bingo'), is they don't realise what an institution the 'proper' game is in the UK !? To host a bingo game, in the traditional way, takes quite a while to get 'trained-up', which is why Lee had been 'shown the ropes'. To pick and 'call' the numbers requires the host to entertain the people and (using quite a bit of Cockney Rhyming Slang), to shout out many standard references (such as 'Tom Mix' for number 6), plus a few local quips. If you don't know the number terms, may I suggest putting into Google search; "Bingo Calling in Britain" This throws up MANY sites listing the usual, accepted options to the NUMBERS CALLED !!! E.g. 'Two Little Ducks' = 22, 'Knock on the Door' = 4 or 'Top of the Shop' = 90 etc. Along with more 'up-dated' versions. As far as I'm aware, this is NOT the norm in the US and explains why Spencer seemed to be oblivious to how Bingo is played in the UK..?

Pro Tip! - When pausing video, Use the directional keys on your keyboard to skip forwards or backwards by 5 seconds, much quicker + smoother.

I did plastic work at school- I made a green shiny bookend thing. I’m ten years younger than Lee they probably phased it out soon after for health and safety

Now here's a thing. I used to see Josie Lawrence on Who's Line, then one day I saw a really old film with a woman in it who looked exactly like her, but blond I think, and her name was also Lawrence as I remember and I couldn't help wondering if she might have been an older relative. But I couldn't find out. So maybe not. I love you guys, you're so much fun. And you have lovely hair Spencer, you hang on to that pony tail. :)

David, Rob and Lee are great friends and socialise often and i remember David's wife, Victoria, saying that Lee is - as she put it - "weirdly quick". He comes across that way on the screen as well - extremely quick. But then all three are exceptionally bright and quick.

The reason many Chinese have an English first names goes back to Britain governing Hong Kong as a colony until 1997. Many Hong Kongers adopted an English first name in addition to their Cantonese names. The English name became part of their official name, as a suffix.
