What i like about ur channel is your frequent follow-ups...

Feels important since I see a lot of videos without a follow up and wonder if it worked, what they learned, etc. I need to do more of that!

Like your thinking. Old Alabama Gardener has a video on making Comfrey salve. Another use for this amazing plant.

Today I dug up some of my comfrey plants and planted pieces of root around the outside of my garden fence for a rhizome barrier. I'm excited to see how this will help keep the weeds out of the garden!

Thank you. Master skills on the homestead. Design, strategy and organic fertilizer and the roots til the soil and draw deeply for nutrients. I would call this a perfect plant.

The only issue is to NEVER dig near them or they spread like fire!

thanks for this video! it's given me a new appreciation for comfrey after I've decided it's not something I want to have a whole lot of, but as you say, if it can essentially prepare a garden bed for me, it's got a place!
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 6 лет назад
I just want to be SUPER SURE folks understand I don't suggest planting it IN a garden or ANYWHERE that people plan to dig or till... That woudl be a real problem! On the outside of a garden in a permanent location it is truly a miracle!

I am installing a similar project to stop Bermuda grass from entering my vegetable garden, very close planted garlic, then comfrey followed by a strip of alfalfa on the grass side... Not sure if it will work as Bermuda or Devils grass is almost unstoppable... Behind the fence on the garden side I have a two food path that I double dig every month to get the runners that come true. If it works I can finally stop the digging, and mulch that path, fingers crossed...
@justjamie333
@justjamie333 6 лет назад
simon allins I’ve found the only way to stop Bermuda is to remove by hand and sheet mulch/woodchips. Also pushing it back in small manageable sections. Sounds like you’re on top of it. Best of luck!! Ps. I’ve never tried a comfrey barrier but have plenty so will do!

Hi Jamie, thank you for your kind words. Yes, I dig it out and remove the rhizomes, it took me an hour per square meter. The comfrey barrier is to prevent it from coming back in. I did a lot of research on Bermuda grass and found several weaknesses. There is a study on eradicating Bermuda funded by SARE and done by an organic farm. They compared mechanical control to hand digging and cover crops. They both work. But most useful info I found by the people who try to keep it alive! Shade, drought and freezing temperatures are your friend in the battle against Bermuda. I have very hot summers and cold winters -11C, it is weakened by summer drought, this winter I will rotary plow just before frost. Once eradicated I can make more gardens. : )
@justjamie333
@justjamie333 6 лет назад
simon allins rotor plow? The weakened Bermuda? Then remove the broken rhizomes?
@justjamie333
@justjamie333 6 лет назад
I’ve thought of tilling an area and then using my shifting tray to remove rhizomes, then sheet mulch, then go after what appears there after. It is a slow (sometimes) frustrating labor of love. Indeed. But so worth it! Thank you for your response :)
@simonallins6010
@simonallins6010 6 лет назад
Roto tilling will cut it into little pieces, a rotary plow is not as destructive to the soil and will not shred the rhizomes as much. It depends on how much land you want to make Bermuda free, in my case way to much to do It by hand... good luck

I love it! You guys have really transformed your property! Very visionary. Just curious, have you ever considered using a Scythe to do your grass cutting? It looks like a great tool and also eco friendly.
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 6 лет назад
I love the scythe, but it hasn't worked for me for mowing lawns.
@JanColdwater
@JanColdwater 6 лет назад
EdibleAcres Oh wow. Do you know why that would be? Could it be because the ground may not be flat? Curious to know where the scythe would give a problem working with it.

I’d like to purchase some root cuttings from you. I’m thinking I’m good for timing but wanted to confer with you first. Is there still enough growing time if I purchase now and plant immediately? Zone 7 northern Virginia I’m also wondering for others if it safe to plant it in fall knowing it will not have time to grow until next spring?
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 6 лет назад
Certainly is. We plant comfrey basically straight through the winter and it takes no matter when we plant! Kind of crazy! Our main planting season is generally later October and we're 5B...

The strip of dead grass running along the line of comfrey, is this your land or your neighbours?
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 6 лет назад
Hmmm.... Hard to say :) . I think a little of both. For the last many years they mowed super tight right up to the fence, which was over their property line, so now I think we're a little over theirs. Over time we might see if they want this pattern to evolve :)

This has been a very helpful video - what do you mean by stepping down on the comfrey leaves - I'm not sure how to do that without killing the leaves? Although, it is pretty hard to kill anything comfrey!
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 4 года назад
It won't kill the comfrey at all, it kinks/breaks the stem a bit and helps them send up new shoots. If the leaves you step on die, great, its more mulch and nutrient for the soil!

Do you use russian comfrey or normal comfrey that makes seeds?
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 6 лет назад
Only Bocking Comfrey. Sterile, does not spread by seeds.

Can comfrey be dried for winter feed for your chickens?
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 6 лет назад
I don't know. I would think comfrey would have a hard time becoming a dried crop.
