Should you use the plastic one the vet gives you or buy a different one? This video goes over the pros and cons of 3 types of e-collars. Watch until the end because I'll show you the secret to getting your dog used to wearing it BEFORE surgery to avoid cone collar escapes that could end in damage to the incision or infection.

Which collar worked best for your pup? Drop a comment below!

i tried the inflatable, tube collar and it didn't work. i have a St. Bernard and his snout was long enough that he could just lick himself anyway. the collar didn't break or fall off, it just wasn't substantial enough. if you have a big dog or a dog with a long snout, i would be careful trusting this to work.

So helpful! If we had waited until surgery day we would have been ill-prepared. Thank you for going into detail on the products and why they're important.

Some dogs are like Houdini, and they can reach, bend or escape from these collars. The inflatable ones are typically less reliable than the big plastic cone of shame the vet supplies. If your dog had ear surgery, then you’d want to use the cone from the veterinarian. Is this an allergy type of thing where you’re trying to stop your dog from itching his or her ears? A veterinary appointment is best as there are medications to relieve symptoms. Your dog could also be checked for an ear infection. You may also want to ask about your dog’s diet. Certain types of animal protein can be linked with allergies.

Congratulations on getting a new puppy! You can try an inflatable, and honestly, it might be wise to get a Comfy Cone and an inflatable to see which one is best. Be sure to ask about the store’s return policy. Look for an inflatable that has loops to thread a collar through. That might mean you’ll need an extra dog collar too. It will need to be a little bit longer than the usual one to avoid the inflatable collar from being too tight. You should be able to easily slide two fingers between the dog collar and your dog’s neck. Good luck!

Thanks for the great review. I am planning to get my beagle this , any idea if it would help him not scratching his eyes ?
@RunAgainRover
@RunAgainRover 2 года назад
Glad it helped. I can’t say for sure if your beagle won’t be able to scratch his eyes because the material is flexible. I suppose another question is why are your dog’s eyes so itchy? Does he scratch them so much that he injured himself? If so, a visit to his veterinarian would be wise. Wishing the best for your boy!

Can they still lick there Paw with it?
@RunAgainRover
@RunAgainRover Год назад
A cone collar might not reduce paw licking. I think the best question we’ve got to ask ourselves is why they’re licking. Let me use a human example to make a point. Let’s say you had a terrible case of Athlete’s Foot - a painful and itchy condition that causes the skin to split open between the toes. You try soothing the discomfort by rubbing your feet and scratching. Which is a better solution? Putting boxing gloves over your hands so you can’t itch, or maybe restraining your arms so you can’t reach your feet? Nahhh, we’ve got to ask why you’re hurting. Once we find the root cause, we can find a solution for you like special creams, cotton socks and washing your feet after you work or exercise. See what I mean? So for dogs there are lots of resins for paw licking. Inspect the paws and between their toes for thorns or any other object that might be stuck. Overgrown nails are actually painful for dogs, and licking may be an attempt to soothe pain. If they need a nail trim and you can’t do it, vet techs do an awesome job, or you can use a groomer. Pet stores like PetSmart (requires proof of a current rabies vaccine) can do nail trims. Look for growths or sores between their toes, and if you see either, schedule a quick vet visit. For some, licking may be behavioral and stem from anxiety or boredom. There are plenty of positive solutions for that. Many dogs have food allergies or may be sensitive to the main protein source in the kibble we feed. Chicken is a common kibble flavor and lots of dogs are allergic to it. Talk to your vet and ask about how to transition from one food to another without having your dog deal with vomiting or diarrhea. Another issue that leads to paw licking is an allergic reaction to something their contacting on the ground. Similarly, it could be a sensitivity to things like lawn sprays and fertilizers (this was my dog’s problem). I’d walk my dog and he’d go through people’s lawns and days later the licking started. It was awful. The solution? I washed and thoroughly dried his paws after walks. If people had super green grass, he wasn’t allowed on it. If I smelled or saw fertilizer bits in the ground, I turned around or went a different way. One last reason for paw licking is a build-up of bacteria or fungus. If your dogs paws smell like Fritos or popcorn, then regularly wash their paws with a gentle dog shampoo, and Pat ‘em dry, even between the toes. Lots of info for you! I hope it helps, Angel. Let me know how it goes!

My malamute had an inflatable one that was much better but he managed to deflate it last night. Which one is best for a big dog?
@RunAgainRover
@RunAgainRover Год назад
Hey Ben. I have an almost 80 pound very active pit bull, and I used the Kong brand for him. I’m curious how your boy deflated the collar? Did you see it happen? And lastly, did you thread a dog collar through the loops along the neck line of the inflatable?
@MrYodaone902

@@RunAgainRover so we just got back from his checkup at the vet. He must have pulled the stopper out as it’s fine now that I’ve reinflated it. It is looped onto his collar with gauze. It makes him snore 🙃
@RunAgainRover
@RunAgainRover Год назад
@@MrYodaone902 oh good! I’m happy he didn’t wreck it. I had to lengthen the collar I used because when threaded through the loops it was a little too snug. You probably already checked, but check to see whether there’s enough room between his neck and the inflatable. Best wishes with your dog, Ben! 😊🙌

Hello, which cone do you think is best for my 2 year old shih tzu? He has an infection near his @nus, we already have a cone for him which was given by the vet but the problem is that he doesnt walk at all with it. We cant remove it cause he licks the infected area and it would become worse. I need some advice ASAP cause he isnt peeing or pooping at all
@cspinelli123
@cspinelli123 2 года назад
So sorry you're struggling with your dog's cone collar. I'd say the best e-collars (cone collars) are ones that don't allow them to lick whatever part of their body they're supposed to stay away from. When my dog had knee surgery, he had to wear a cone collar for over two weeks. I only removed it when he went outside to pee/poop. He had an easier time sniffing, and he was more focused on that and showed no interest in licking his leg. The moment we got back into the house, I put the cone collar back on. If you continue having issues, I recommend putting in a call to his veterinarian. They may have some other solutions. Good luck!
@frozenyogurtz2939
@frozenyogurtz2939 2 года назад
@@cspinelli123 thank you for this response! I decided that i will just remove the cone when I'll let him pee or poop, I will just watch him carefully so he wont lick himself
@cspinelli123
@cspinelli123 2 года назад
@@frozenyogurtz2939 very good. If he has an infection near his anus and poops, the area could become sore or itchy. What happens then? He'll want to soothe it by licking. So please, as soon as you get back inside, put his cone collar on before doing anything else.
@frozenyogurtz2939
@frozenyogurtz2939 2 года назад
@@cspinelli123 as i said before, I'll watch him carefully so i can stop him before he licks the infected area. He's also very obedient so he would stop if i told him so and dont worry, i wont forget to put back his cone after he poops

I wish I watched this before the spay surgery- watching this 4 days after and finally bought my dog a more comfortable collar and the 40 overpriced plastic collar from the vet was a waste
@RunAgainRover
@RunAgainRover 10 месяцев назад
I’m glad you found a more comfortable cone collar. Keep the $40 one though because sometimes they can still reach the incision with the inflatable donut style collars or even the Comfy Cone. Dogs hate the plastic vet collars, but many times they’re the best lick deterrents. Best wishes for your pup’s smooth recovery.

For the inflatable one, you mentioned having a seperate longer collar. My dog wears an 8", would you recommend 9" or 10"? Thank you, great video!
@RunAgainRover
@RunAgainRover Год назад
I think one of those adjustable length ones would be best. Keep testing the length once it’s threaded through the loops on the inflatable. You’ll know you’ve found the right collar length when you can comfortably slide two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck. If you get an adjustable length collar, you’ll still be able to use it after your dog is healed. Best wishes for a smooth recovery! 🐕💕

I used the full body suit!
@RunAgainRover
@RunAgainRover Год назад
Hey there, Greg! Yep, the full body suits can be a great solution for certain dogs. The bonus is that pups in pajamas look pretty cute. For others considering pjs, be mindful that the material is thin. For dogs that are lickers, a suit may not provide enough protection. Another thing to be mindful of is the snugness of the material against your dog’s incision. Too snug may irritate the post-op area and increase the dog’s desire to lick.
