The grading system is officially broken. What next - 9.95s? Can the finest grader in the world explain the difference between a 9.8 and a 9.9 with a straight face? Of course not.

I used to love collecting graded Comics but the way cgc is getting makes me want to not collect any graded books and sell the ones I have except for my golden age graded books and a few key silver age and a few sentimental ones

To get an 11 it must have all the signatures of everyone who worked on it, the person at the warehouse who taped the box, the delivery driver, the owner of the newsstand, the barrister who made his coffee quick enough so he didn't miss the delivery of the box to his newsstand and the paw print of his dog who guards the stand while he gets his coffee.

It's the sad state of the market when one needs to pay a massive premium for a 9.8 that doesn't look like a 9.6 and pretend it's 9.9. The Secret Wars 9.9 book you highlight has a miss wrap. That's not a 9.9. No printer defects are expected on a 9.9 If I had an employee who couldn't tell a 9.6 from a 9.8, I wouldn't let them evaluate 9.9s. Just sayin. This won't end well for CGC fans

Agreed. It's pretty clear they relaxed the grading standard. I thought the standard was the standard and theoretically, it shouldn't change. All I know is any high grade book in a holder that has a serial number that starts with 42, 43, or 44 is suspect. Better examine that book closely. You might have an 8.5 sitting in a 9.6 holder.

@@vinceguaglione5524 I think they might find out that they can't determine standards. They co-opted the ones they have in the first place. I think 9.9 crap is a cover-up for a decade of shoddy 9.6 and 9.8 grading.

@@holyharlot5222 they used to be fairly strict and consistent in their grading. Wasn’t as strict as overstreet but at least we all knew they were a touch more lenient and you could accurately estimate grade within a point or so of overstreet. Now? It’s a free for all. They’re giving out high grades like candy these days.

have you seen the price of slabs. CGC hit the final nail on the coffin. The slab being easily broken was bad, then they did the idiotic thing of verifying Signatures after 10+ years of making fun of CBCS, then they go hey 9.9 are easier to get now. So all those silly people paying 5x more for a 9.8 than a 9.6 or 100x more for a 9.9 than a 9.8 :)

At the price level for these books it is no longer about collecting as a hobby or liking characters/artists/writers etc it is all about trying to own something other people do not own no matter what it actually is.its a status symbol just like anything else. Collect what you like in prices you can afford and don’t worry about the number a company puts on a piece of paper inside plastic

We need third party grading for big books but we don't need this kind of manipulation. 25 years in they suddenly change the grading scale. At least be open about it so that older graded books can hold their value and the newer 9.9s don't go for silly money.

I'm tempted to try for 9.9s just to try to get in on this crazy money to be made. I prefer raw books myself so I can check out the interior artwork - unless it's signed. I do like me some CGC SS slabs.

The new era of 9.9 and 10 CGC grading has made me want to stop collecting graded comics. I think I will only buy CGC books from now on with the intention to flip them🤑

$15k for a NM 87 in any grade, let alone a human graded book is laughable. The last buyer that that gets suckered I to buying it for spec is going to have buyers remorse.

It's so easy to blame CGC and the other grading companies (one of my favorite pastimes). With recent events, they're an easy target. But at the end of the day, if someone is willing to pay $15,000 for a book like that 9.9 New Mutants ( a book I wouldn't pay $50 for), then that's on the bidder and the bidders who are clearly in need of some serious help or need to perhaps seek out an intelligent second opinion. Now, as for that X-Force #2--well, I'd easily pay $20 grand for that in a 10. That would be sweet. What a rare gem!

As long as I get 9.8s from my submissions I dont really care. If I get a 9.9 or 10 then its just gravy. Not going to go out of my way to buy a 9.9 or 10 if I didnt get it myself from grading.

Top sales seemed to have created a trickle down before to the lower grades but with this (new) grading situation, I wonder what effect it will have. Could devalue the lower grades?

Forget just comic buying - go to a convention, have dinner with friends and buy a key grail….and correct on the concerns about 9.8s getting bumped to 9.9s or 10. In my opinion, these folks are speculating, not serious collectors, especially because of the risk based on the census count. Great video for great discussion. Thank you.

You have to be out of your mind if your gonna crack a 9.9 to try to get a 10.0. Probably will come back 99.9999% of the time a 9.8. So this is a total stupid mute point, unless you have a handful of 9.9's, which ain't gonna happen. Stupid.
