Hey man. I've been around here ever sense your How to get featured on webtoon video. I finally got out of my depression and I'm gonna start my own series. I just wanted to thank you. You helped me keep being motivated and making storyboards even if I couldn't bring myself to actually draw anything. I know that it's gonna take a long time untill I actually can publish my stuff but at least I took the first step.
So glad to hear that you're out of your depression, love to hear that. And that you're jumping back in to comics. Let me know if there's anything I can help with and I'll try.
@@walterostlie I don't wanna bother you but I joined the Discord server under the name AJ makes stuff so I hope we can talk once in a while. I also would love to hear your opinion of my story when I finished conceptualising
Thanks, I really needed this because everytime I write dialog it always sounds stiff and boring. You actually got me here 8:46 plus english is not my native language so it's really hard for me to not make direct descriptions like instead of saying "You think I'm dumb?" it's better to say "You think I was born yesterday?" or "My birthday is near." to "My birthday is just around the corner." something like that pls don't judge me haha
I just don’t want to write everything (and proof read and whatnot) and then not be able to draw what I want. Like having issues with anatomy or mood. But yeah! I agree that some people can write stiffly and because my comic’s dialogues are pretty short, I wouldn’t say it’s too bad? Especially when it comes to the time period, ages, etc. but these are very helpful tips! Thanks again, Walter.
I would love a video on writing and researching characters of a different culture to understand how to avoid stereotypes and try to show more the charm of the different culture😯💕
Long route: I've watched TV shows (with subtitles) made from countries I didn't know much about. It's crazy how much you can pick up that way. It's very visual - obviously. So you pick up certain gestures, common clothing styles as well as spoken details.
Yes! Walter's here!! Your videos are REALLY Awsome! And your tips are SUPER helpful! But the thing is, English is not my first language , so it maybe difficult for me and for some other people like me to speak it "out loud" when writing dialogue......but thanks again!
I know it can be real hard. But speaking it out loud will help, watching movies in english will also help. But really the most helpful thing will be making some native English speakers for proof-reads.
man after watching this I went back to read out loud my scripts and daaaamn its trash i had to re write the whole thing, thanks walter i really needed this
I sorta act through my stories and art. I live in a small town, so not much acting out here. Maybe Steven Spielberg will get interested in webtoons and find me and then hire me. That would be dope. :-)
Hey Walter! Just wanna say thank you for making your videos so fun, engaging, and easy to grasp ☺ making comics has definitely been less daunting since I started watching your videos
Short and sweet. Great points! After I graduated in '73, I bought my first Thesaurus. Still have it. A valuable tool! But now, there is Google. LOL. There are ways to make characters sound intelligent without being grandiose. Of course there are exceptions, depending on the character. Your content is great! That is why I subscribed. I am a little bit closer to launching my own webtoon, but I still need to smooth out some rough edges. Step one: create a good story. That is where I am, at the moment. I think the rest will come naturally. That is me.
Really enjoyed this video. I've written a novel in the past but have been concepting a graphic novel during Covid. Need to start the writing. Any videos you can recommend on how to decide which parts of a story you show with art and which you show with text? Thanks for your videos!
Thanks for the video, Walter!! I’m currently trying to script out my story, and trying to make the dialogue sound natural is something I’m struggling with. I appreciate all the little humor bits and thumbnails too. Have a nice day!
Ps. If you’d like suggestions for a further video, I would appreciate if you could give some tips on how to properly use dialogue to foreshadow or set up your story if that makes sense. Thanks again :)
@@jayaphurailatpam2480 it'll be out by around july 11. Though, it has lgbtq+ themes, so it might not be for everyone, and i understand if it's not to your liking. It's "Warmth" by Poly Polar. Thank you for being interested!
I do have a question about dialogues... how do I make sure the dialogues suit the character? Anything on how to study up on that would be a big help, Walter. Thank you for your informative and fun content.
With dialogue, it's always important to consider your character. A very formal character is prolly gonna be formal in their speaking too. A laid back character would prolly slurr words and such. It's not enough to just write normal sounding dialogue, your dialogue must also sound normal to the person you have crafted.
Walter, I was wondering your thoughts about being a Webcomic artist, whether or not it's a viable job option. I noticed you have a strong IT background despite being one.
I did IT work for a long time. I saved up a little nest egg of money by never buying anything and did comics on the side. Till eventually I had enough money saved and I was making enough money from art/comics to quit my job. I have a video detailing the entire journey, Path to Freelance I think.
I've often wondered how many people noticed the eyeballs. Thanks for catching that detail. I hadn't heard of Oobi before, but I looked it up. I absolutely love that there's a tv show where they stuck eyeballs on top of a hand. More of that vibe needs to exist in the world.
@@walterostlie Yeah, it's too bad more educational children shows aren't really like it nowadays. I don't think they even air it anymore. I didn't think much of it when I was younger, but it was a fun show. It's so silly. XD
If it would be possible for you to make a video about planning a panel or an scene in a panel? I always struggle with that.. It's like a blank page for me.
it took me more time writing my dialogue, first i write it in my own languange then translate it, then i ask help to my online friends who's more comfortably talking in english, its help me a lot and I also i learned things XD.
I'm creating a comic and it's really hard to make a dialoge in english cause it's either my first nor second language... I will try harder and like always, thank you very much Walter!!!
I totally understand, but you are doing the right thing. Do what you can and you'll always get better and more comfortable with the language. Watching American movies or reading American comics will help, try repeating the lines out loud so your brain get's used to saying it, not just understanding it.
I got editor on my comic for this stuff and she really did a good job but still really need for someon to read on multiple people i know xD. Anyway i like to ask , if some creator on webtoon that they put 18+ will they still get a ad to there webtoon?
Yeah I actually say my dialouges outloud, even the shouting, to the point I get embarrassed. I just laugh at myself and say "Ah what am I doing?" ;w; This video will help me in the near future.
Hey mr walter!! Me again (sorry if im annoying you with all these questions) But i just found a webtoon comic that has the same name title as mine's going to be. So do i have to change my comic's title?? (Honestly i really don't want to) Btw ur videos are always helpful so thank you!!!!
You don't have to change it. Just work harder to make your comic the better one ;-) Bummer though. But not a crazy huge deal. Unless that comic is already crazy popular.
@@walterostlie oh thanks again!!! I was worried like crazy!! Don't know why but i just searched it up n 1 result came... But that's ok cause I'll work really hard for my story n i have full confidence in it!!
Can you do something with writing kids as characters? Like around elementary school? Obviously I can’t always relate to children and I can’t always speak with them and especially now I have no idea what little kids really talk like these days cause they seem to be changing constantly. Either way it would help
Do you mean how to write a non-adult convincingly or do you mean trying to keep up with the latest slang/abbreviation, so that your characters sound hip? Also do you mean like 5 year olds or we talking 13-18?
I think it would depend on how important it is to the story and the type of impediment specifically. I think I would say try out a few examples and let some other people read them to see if it is either offensive or hard to understand. Unless you want it to be hard to understand to sell the point of the impediment.
Convert it? You should be able to type in whatever language you want. If the language uses different symbols, you'll need to find a font that supports those symbols. If you just want to translate, you can prolly just use google translate.
@@walterostlie Wow ^^. Thank you so much... So basically if I have like 300 episodes I can only get contracted for the mentioned number of episodes but WT gets to have the digital rights for +/- 3 years?
@@licio5823 Ah. You mean if you get converted from canvas to original? That I am not sure. You may only be contracted for new episodes and not the old episodes. They may then only have exclusivity to the new episodes. But that could be weird. They may end up paying you for the old episodes, but maybe at a reduced rate? I am big time just guessing, I'm only familiar with straight to original, not the conversion from canvas to original. That's a really good question though. I'll see if I can find out or if you find out, let me know.
Interesting tips as always. Definitely making me think more about my dialogues. I wrote under your previous video that I finished my webtoon entry, you said you wanted to see it so: www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/morbus-b/part-5-end/viewer?title_no=435659&episode_no=6 Would love to hear your thoughts on the overall story and whatnot. Thank you!
That was really good! Well done! Just one little thing. Dialogue at the end "Back then you also said..." there is a balloon tail pointed at the main character, I think it's supposed to be a tailless balloon. Otherwise, top notch work! Looking forward to more from you.
@@walterostlie Oh yes, I noticed it few hours after posting, but can't edit it as it's a contest entry.. I'm sooo upset xD Thank you so much! Your interest in feedback really gave me a boost of confidence to see it till the end :D
Totally fits. Makes you wonder if it was him fooling himself or if he's going crazy because it really is true or if he's been infected. Lots of possibilities, lots of brain activity triggered.

@@walterostlie someone around 5-10 years old. I’m trying to figure out how to make his dialogue sound simple but also finding a way to make it sound real, like “yeah, this is what a little kid would say”. I also know it probably depends on the kid’s personality, but overall I want to be able to write engaging dialogue while still making him sound little and innocent. I have no problem with teens though...I mean, I am one.
Hmm, I'll think about it. Usually I default towards making people just sound like people unless you have a super strong confidence in getting a certain type of "character" across. But I'd say for young kids, they tend to understand things more literally and use solutions that drive straight through problems. There's less intricacies to their words and thoughts.
