In this video I talk about the latest and greatest FOMO book. We are talking about Blood Hunt 1 The 1 in 25 EC homage cover swipe of Crime Suspenstories 22 featuring the decapitation Thor. What do you guys think about this recent variant cover explosion? I think it mostly has to do with FOMO. But now the speculators are jumping on to the next EC homages that are coming out. I talk about them but also talk about diminishing returns for these types of gimmicks.

I preordered 7 of these variants around $50-60 each because it felt like the red band edition would be under-ordered and the regular edition was heavily over-ordered with high ratio incentives. Plus it's just an edgy cover for a Marvel comic. But I had no idea they would go this high and I just sold them all right away.

There is very little intrinsic value to modern comics and its variants: not historic key significance whatsoever (at least currently), market already caught up to the artificial scarcity thing and that factor is less important everytime, and condition for a just released comic is also a non-factor (9.8 is Mandatory at this bracket). So with little intrinsic value supporting those inflated prices, it is almost natural that a mean reversion will come very soon.

In general, I always go for the cover a and avoid the gimmicks of cover swaps. The only exception is when the cover is the cover swap.

I saw this one coming two months away... CrimeSuspense 22 homage is always fun... the Wolverine 55 homage cover was recently super popular so it made sense people would like this one too... I bought 3 copies and sold one to keep 2 for the PC.

When I first looked at the Blood Hunt cover I thought it was Thor holding the axe 🪓 the proportions are a bit off , and for that reason I’ll pass on this one . Peace ☮️

It's a cool incentive, but those prices make no sense. Bloodhunt had to be in the top 3 orders of the month. Even at a low 50k, thats 2000 copies. This should be a hundred dollar book at max, but I know those EC and Thor fans can be a fervent lot.

People realizing the ratio is only available from ordering the red band variant helped a little. Add in a solid story and an homage to a great cover not to mention Thor actually does die in the issue. Perfect storm

The industry is relying on gimmicks. How many number 1 issues do they produce now? How many variants do we need? Eventually they will scale back because the sales won’t be there.

Marvel Comics is riding the horror book hype. Since every collector is looking for pre-code Horror books. Blood Hunt gives modern collectors some kind of entry to it since most cannot afford precode. Going back to your other video about degen money coming back, which also brings back retail money into comic books. We have seen this before. People fomo. Price falls. Collect what you love. Don't be a retail zombie. Remember Stray Dogs? Yeah. Don't fall for that trap.

I signed up for these when the book was first announced, before the red band was even a thing. I learned about this book from my LCS when they warned me about the price. While I’d love them to hold their value, I just don’t see it happening. Sure, the cover is cool, but the story is mid at best (just in my opinion. I know I’m in the minority based on what I see), with a first appearance of a group of which I already forgot the name. Yes, I’m crapping on the book, but I’m a guy that also bought it before it was a thing so I figure I have a pass.

Can anyone guess the number of times Spider-Man 300 has been "homaged"? Way, way, way too many times. If you're a creator that would like to bring attention to a classic cover. I'm thinking of Neal Adams Batman #227 giving homage to Bob Kane’s cover for Detective Comics #31. Then please do it with restraint and style. I can't speak for others but I see the "Spider-Man 300" homage as both cringe and lazy. I'm sure that they devalue the original.

I stopped buying comic books when I figured it out. They can’t sell. They won’t sell and literally they lose every dollar you pay for them. But we enjoy comic books.
