Thank You for being a good father Image for many of us Blackmen that didn't have fathers growing up. You was a strong male that showed us what a real man / Father was. Thank You Sir.
Lion Of Judah Good Times showed a positive image in many ways and gave a lot of folks hope and courage. John Amos has been a man among men on TV and film.
I ll never forget that scene James: You heard of the extended family well this weekend makes you part of one which gives the right to extend this belt around yr behind if I need to Youngster: ho hooo I would like to see that James: oh well anything to oblige you mister Well u know the rest ....... lol
Look... me and the McDonald's people got this little misunderstanding. See, they're McDonald's... I'm McDowell's. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds.
Man I've watched that movie over a thousand times and it cracks me aaalllll the time, that scene is one of my favorite, that and the "Honey look, the boy has his own money, ohhhh Lisa you've struck it rich baby * laughs* I knew there was something special about that boy"😂😂😂😂😂 it murders me all the time.
People didn’t know the mom of Goodtimes was 19 years older than John Amos during the show. She died in 1998 and was 78 years old. John just turned 77 this year.
We grew up in Nigeria west Africa with John Amos, Fred Sandford and Cosby as icons for us and what they represented as successes in the black community way back then
@Bigfoot doesn't believe in you either Who give a flying F*** about being fired? your not Black, You can't tell or even narrate my story no matter how hard you may want to.
Bigfoot doesn't believe in you either. Bigfoot doesn't believe in you either I am the boss. You keep up the great work as the internet spelling police. Don't get pissed with me because your cave beast ass can't control someone else story. You continue impressing bosses and I will continue to be one. All while using your, and you're interchangeably.
Shawnte Amoure Simmons I'm proud of you son. Just goes to show you put in the hours at the drive through window and one day you get to wear those big red shoes. Awww shit, I love a happy ending!
Do y'all remember when James Evans on Good Times asked that blind man if he could read Braille and the blind man said yes... so James Evans made a fist with his hand and then grabbed the blind man fingers and placed them on his knuckles and said... "What that say?" CLASSIC!!!!!!! LOL
Straight up, I grew up with my Mother and Father and I watched Good Times on Prime time TV. John Amos was as close to my Dad as any person in my life. He had a proud side, rageful, understanding, kind, loving. I would call him my surrogate Father as he always tried to be the best that he could be for his family. Working great 2-3 jobs and never quite making it. But they always had love. 💗
What an AMAZING MAN !!! Continued BLESSINGS to you Mr. Amos . I grew up watching Good Times. But I ALWAYS knew you were BIGGER than that TV SHOW. Sooooo much RESPECT to you !!!!! And Ester Rolle what a AMAZING, STRONG,BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. RIP Ester Rolle.
John Amos you were that show and I truly missed you when they killed off your character. Thank you sir for being a positive image of what a true father is. For me as a young black girl growing up without my father, You instilled in me core values that a young girl growing up should follow. Again legend, I thank you :-)
One of the saddest days of my life as a child happened when I realized John aka James wouldn't be returning to the show, I was depressed for months, he represented & portrayed the men in our families accurately. There was nothing more powerful then hearing "wait until your father or grandfather comes home," which meant it was time for the belt rodeo lol, but it kept us in line, alive and out of trouble.
I know what your saying. When we were young and we first watched the episodes of his death and funeral, it seemed so real we were very sad for a while even after seeing reruns of those episodes was dreaded.
Well peep this out. I'm a Latino American and my pops was there for me growing up. But John Amos had such an impact on mine and my sisters life we felt like he was our father too. Thru the screen. I'm not kidding I had father to son fear and respect For this man. It's funny but he looks like my dad too. So when i haven't seen him in a min. And I see his aged face. I said to myself on the inside man, dad's getting old. I know its wired. But that’s how I feel when I see Mr Amos. Sry had to comment. Much love Sway
nothing but respect for this man. I hope he's in the Coming to America 2 if they make it... I hope they don't mess it up tho. Do it right or don't do it at all. As long as Eddie and the originals are in it or apart of it I can't see it failing.
i think the creator of blackish is attached to the remake. thats the only thing that gives me a glimmer of hope lol i really enjoy the writing on blackish. hopefully they can bring the same to the remake if one there is one coming
I feel like a sequel shouldn't be made. 'Coming to America' is such a timeless film that doesn't need a sequel. This is just a cash grab by Hollywood. As u said if the originals are in it then it won't fail and it'll probably be a box office success but one thing I know for sure is that it will not have lightning in a bottle that the 1998 classic had. I just don't what them to ruin the legacy of such a timeless film that people will talk about in 100 years time.
Sway is a better interviewer..... Joe Rogan once said something that was poignant..... he doesn’t do many interviews besides one on one.... too many people talking over each other.
True! I feel like Asians do a better job at it though(not being racist. It's just an observation). I've read an article about a 44 year old Japanese woman who looks very, very young. She could pass as a teenager and looks younger than many people who are in their 20s!
I remember that nonsense lol great great season and the writers couldn't think of anything better and they have him marry Will's mom. And then never mention again the next season lmao
John Amos was one of my favorite actors growing up. The very first time I saw him as the father on GOOD TIMES, I knew he had to be from the BRICKS. There was such a connection I felt. Sometime later, I discovered he was born in Newark. There was a lot of strong image dad's like James Evans (John's character) in my Hood in the 70's... Grafton Ave. PJ's. Keep that POSITIVE STRONG BLACK IMAGE UP, Mr.John Amos. We Love You. One!
A true legend. Wish they would have completed the discussion on Eric Monte and Michael Evans who created the show, but they didn't expand on it. Eric Monte also wrote and produced Cooley High, along with creating What's Happening.
John Amos made a strong black father figure as James Evans that any black child could look up too...however! IMO the reason that topic was not pursued,Heather B caught him in a lie sort of,he said their were no black writers, the white writers didn't understand black culture, blah blah blah, other sources say it was because Jimmy Walker had become the focal point of the show and....their....was...some jealousy between them, notice how at the end he said they were "close" but not as "close" as portrayed on the show, wink wink and about working with great comedians and didn't call Jimmy walker's name,he also gave clues to this (assumption) by saying the writers and producers considered him disruptive...kinda like Steve Urkel on Family Matters unintentional stealing the limelight...R.I.P Michael Evans(The OG Lionel Jefferson)
adrian72300 Hard to disagree with this comment, and I did feel a little ashamed for Amos when he was called on that by Heather B. It was known that both Amos and co-star Esther Rolle weren’t happy that Jimmie Walker became the focal point of the show, but indeed they especially weren’t happy with the buffoonery and stereotyping of Walker’s character.
Thanks...IMO the character JJ Evans is misunderstood because of lol as you stated the buffoonery, but take a different perspective if you will,JJ was a talented artist,self-confident,family first person who sacrificed whenever needed for his family, respected his parents,in other words JJ had great character, and if you were to tell him this he would pause, look at you and say I knooooooow...peace.
This was not really a big show in the UK, not syndicated where I lived, anyway, yet we heard of the legendary status of it in America. This man has principles and I am down with that. Not everything in life is about a paycheck - gotta represent for the important things. Legend!
He hasn't aged that much at all. Still looks good for his age. He was a true definition of a strong black father on Good Times. You need people to be hard on you and tell it how it is. Also can't wait for Coming To America sequel.
I still love pops he will always be pops and a strong father figure forever. Yall for got to mention his role in playas club too. He looks so good too. Father YAH has kept a watchful eye on him.
So very good to see this man. You stand for so much. I was blessed to have my father in my life and he stood like you did. I am so blessed to have had him. Thank you Sir.
Ehhh....really? My brother is in high school right now & many of his friends look like they're still in middle school, lol. To me, it seems like each generation looks younger and younger.
John stared in alot of great shows after good times( maude, the mary tyler moore show, sanford and son,704 hauser, hunter, all about the andersons.alot of unforgettable roles since he left goodtimes so he will be appreciated for all the tv and movies since goodtimes.
John Amos was everything to me as a kid...his work is most definitely REVOLUTIONARY....I just wanna thank him for everything he has done...I will never forget this brotha! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
I'm fascinated by Halley's Comet! 1986 I was in the second grade and my mother was a school teacher at the same school. Together she came to my class and we watched it. 76 years, I remember thinking "will I ever see this again!" I don't know, but I'll never forget this.
I watched you on Good Times! Loved you on Coming to America! You have always been an inspirational character! Really loved you on Roots. I held my daughter and son up to the stars too and prayed great blessings over their lives!!!
I love us! As a people no matter our struggles we will always have inspiration from people like this man. Grew up watching Goodtimes and it was an experience watching that show with my family. So many good memories chilling in the living room with this show watching reruns.
John Amos reminds me so much of my Dad, because of his strength of character, tenacity, toughness, and love. I love his character James Evans Sr. Right on!
I love Mr. Amos and I would love to see him in Coming to America 2... I just bought his book from amazon thanks to your show Sway... I definitely want to support this man whose been my tv dad for years. I wish him continued blessings...
Man, what a beautiful conversation with our beautiful Kings and Queen. Swag, brother you host the best and most respectful interviews. Much respect to you young brother.
Heather B, I remember her early rhymes in the 90s... I watched Good Times growing up, some funny & interesting characters...Sweet Daddy, Penny, John Amos, JJ and so on. Some real life experiences in the projects, making the best of a situation.
Hello YT! I don't know how I got here but, I met John Amos in 1988 at the Soul Train Awards and he was so kind to take a picture with me. I still have the picture to this day! Thank you John Amos!
