Truly a meteoric rise. He was already a star when “Trading Places” came out, but almost exactly five years later, when “Coming to America” was released, he ruled the world.

Yes they did. I saw this in the eighties as a child and straight away saw the connection. It was brilliant.

Saw this in the theaters on opening night with a packed house and this scene had everyone applauding and going nuts.

I think that, what it was, is that Mortimer Duke cursed his own Brother, when their Empire came crashing down, in the Movie "Trading Places". Randolph Duke, although still with his Brother, still hadn't forgiven him for that. But:They were still together, so..... Suddenly, they found themselves with a chance to re-start their lives. Hopefully, they used that Money wisely. This could've been... Their last chance!

I hadn't seen the movie when I first saw Coming to America, and still thought it was funny. Just saw it as two homeless guys being over the moon about getting a lot of money. Now that I've actually seen Trading Places, that just makes it even better. lol

Yup I guess they learn their lesson 😂😂

...and Randolph never forgot that very callous, hateful remark, that had been directed straight at him, when he was at his lowest, having a Heart Attack, and facing what could've been his possible death! He found out, in that moment, that his own Brother, even if only for a moment, thought only about himself! Something like that is hard to forgive, and forget. It does a lot of damage!

Oh! 😲 I really want to see coming to America 2 now. I think the deeper message behind this (accidental or not) is everyone's life is intertwined.

I'd love to see how Winthrop and Valentine reacted to them coming back to Wall Street.

Nobody should you're right but I think in this case they did deserve it because of of what they did to widthorpe they dragged him to hell they didn't care if he had died in the street they used him just for a dollar bet.

Think of the last scene in Trading Places * Randolph falls to the floor clutching his chest * Exchange Comissioner: "Mortimer, your brother doesn't seem well, we should get him a doctor." Mortimer Duke: "FUCK HIM!!"

Randolph’s probably had to deal with years of Mortimer complaining and being short with him for what he did

Near the end of "Trading Places",when Randolph was having a heart attack,Mortimar ignored,and used the F Word him.

Gotta figure even in 80's dollars there was probably six figures in that package

@@badouplus1304 Ya but they still did a small cameo. In the beginning of the movie when Eddie finds out he has a son, then the scene cuts to NewYork in an office where Eddie son is giving an interview to the company boss and the boss tells him the history of his company, how it was started by his dad and uncle who were no one but those two, the boss had a big portrait of them in his office and that's where I recognize them and surprise to see them rich again.

You must have seen this 1st right? I thought Billy (Eddie's name in trading places) became Akeem and wanted to do right, mind you I was only 5, so hadn't grasped the concept of acting. Only later did I understand that Billy and Akeem are 2 entirely separate characters.

@Vitold Wisniewski oh definitely, they were old men, 70, 80? They had at least done it, or something similar, in the past. I'm a very GOD fearing man, and know this wasn't their first time. Actually, didn't they say "the usual $1 is what I owe you?" Or something like that? In the bathroom.

@@Tee-Dot-Tv Maybe but still In my personal opinion, if the Dukes had simply mentioned the bet, Valentine would have let bygones be bygones and let them off while helping Winthorpe get his fortune back. He probably would have been like, “Let’s leave them be, they’re old men, and, while you didn’t like what happened to you, you got to see what went on in my life and you can appreciate what you had more genuinely.” Or something along those lines. This likely would have calmed Winthorpe enough to recognize that he was right. But the moment they used that racial slur for Valentine and refused to take back Winthrope, all bets were off and Valentine decided to help Winthrope take them down.

@Vitold Wisniewski yeah, but then we wouldn't have a movie 😅! One thing my brother said to me is "they want them to do that" almost everything on screen or in front of an audience has been rehearsed and made up. I used to shit myself (figuratively) when I watched horror films, but after he said that I was like its all a farce! Don't get me wrong I still enjoy the work they do, but I always remember it's scripted and rehearsed. So I'm sure that option came up, but we wouldn't have the outstanding movie trading places.
