Thanks Logan! I have a C2 in a RHD country, and with a wide angle lens stuck to the C2 I've been pretty happy (though some glasses cause problems with driver detection). The one thing OP has done for me is made me a chill driver - even with people cutting in sometimes to the buffer to the car in front, doesn't worry me like it used to. I was interested in the C3 for the centre cam - but the lack of any other advantage doesn't justify it (especially coming from Aussie dollars).
Thanks for suggesting wide angle lens, never crossed my mind. For a while, I even tried mounting comma bit over to the right. That only made my car stay so close to the left lane
The sound on the comma 3 is painful. I thought my speaker was broken. Everything else seems great so far. I really hope they update the sound and not try to copy the internal speaker of a 1992 PC.
Don't really see the value of the comma 3 right now. I wish they add a model that isn't OLED and doesn't use LTE and lower the price. Having it 2,199 seems too expensive compared to 1,099 comma 2. I have a free hotspot on my phone and don't really need navigation so the added features are not needed to justify the 1,100 price jump.
I think the 3 will last at least 4 years. Comma 2 still have another year to go and so I think they will support c3 for a least 3 years after that. The c2 lasted forever
@@jnelson854 my eon is fine, too. The glass was that of the car. I'm speaking to feature releases. Living in the desert, it's also attractive that the comma 3 could be left mounted and can see me at night.
C3 for me has more problems staying in the center of the lane. Cant handle turns as well as C2. My c2 crapped out so I had to upgrade but im tempted to buy a C2 off ebay.
New to Comma, purchasing a 3. Biggest consideration is marginal thermal management on 2. If a comma 2 quits post warranty, might as well had the 3 all along. Improved low light performance and future updates will definitely justify the purchase over time.
The black case is a huge heat sink and causes my comma 2 to overheat in the bright sun. My comma 2 started giving me a fan error message and was overheating. So what I did was remove the puny little fan inside the comma 2 and put a larger computer fan on the outside of the case. I then wired that fan to a 12 volt switched power source from my car. I also spray painted the case an off white and it now is a lot cooler running in the hot sun. I got quite a few error messages when I parked the car in the sun and until the interior of the car cooled down, it would give me fan error message. Now with these modifications, no more problems. I can actually touch the comma 2 now even after sitting in the hot sun. Thermal engineering on the C2 is not really all that good.....some modifications can make it excellent. I was told that my C2 could be fixed for $500 and sending back my unit. With these mods, I saved $500 and it makes it work better. Still an awesome system and I will not be without it. C3 so far seems to be much more robust in higher temperatures. Still overheats but I don't think it's thermal limits have been raised from C2 so could probably handle the heat better. Unfortunately the LeEco smartphone that the C2 is based on was never meant for the heat of a car interior but if you take care of it it can hold up!
I may not know what I’m talking about here, so bear with me… why not just come up with a software that can be uploaded into a vehicles firmware and that would basically use a vehicles onboard camera system/sensors (with the ability to add extra cameras to vehicles of course)? Most vehicles today come with one or two cameras. Being able to flash a vehicle‘s system and upload something like this that would integrate with the consumers vehicle without the need of additional dash hardware would be sweet. But I think the question would be, is it even possible? And if so why not go there with this?
There are many obstacles to doing just that. Voiding the manufacturer warranty, proprietary software, intellectual property rights, and or bricking the cars PLC are a few of the biggest. The list goes on. If there was an open source car manufacturer then it would be much simpler.
That's what I thought. But reading the response of @jalofanclub I think setting up openpilot is exactly the same thing. If you have an accident using it the insurance companies will probably not cover because you hacked your car's system... What do you think?
I just had a minor fender-bender (rear-ended). I've downloaded all the high-res video feeds from all the cameras. I've noticed that the driver's camera (which we needed the most to see exactly what happened) is definitely a different framerate than the other cameras (looks "sped up" - maybe not quite double speed). Just curious if anyone (Logan or whoever) can find the FPS or capture rate. I'm asking this just in case we have to prove it was entirely the other driver's fault and we need to "sync" the videos together.
For newest corolla and comma 2 in RHD country Seat in closest to steering wheel position, driver monitoring doesn't work. Driver camera is on LHS on comma 2 and you can't invert the device. Cars for taller drivers , no issues. I did have to move the reversing mirror all the way up and out of the way Also had to fingerprint corolla and everytime comma updates , had to fingerprint again
@@guptasinghy so true. Mine is the newest Corolla too (2020/2021). In the past, I have to turn my head to the C2 every few minutes for the device to detect my face. But now, it is more forgiven. About the fingerprinting, I have no issue at all during every updates. I guess they uses Github id for that (not sure, forgot the method's name). Every update was smooth.
I have had my Comma 3 for almost a month now. I drove a 6-hour drive on the expressway with it yesterday. To be honest, I can see no difference between my C2, which I've had for a year, and the C3. If you have a Comma 2, I would strongly recommend you keep that until there is a significant difference in the 3. If you have not purchased a device, the C3 is over double the price of the C2, (I have the 1TB Cross Country model) and if you're on a tight budget, I don't think you will see any difference between the 2 and the 3 now and you should buy the C2. I am keeping my C2 and I will leave it in the car when I sell it. My wife also has a Tesla so I am quite familiar with the auto driving of both systems. The Comma system is absolutely excellent and you will not be disappointed with either device. I purchased the C3, and I am glad that I did, because I want to support the company. The value of Open Pilot is phenomenal and I made that 6-hour drive yesterday only having to hold the wheel perhaps 20 minutes of the entire time and only 2 minutes on the interstate and that was due to tight curves going through cities. You will not be disappointed with either unit. The C3 may bring future improvements that make it worth the money and if you are a first adopter, this is definitely the unit to get because it is the future. I did read that Comma will cease updates for the C2 in a year but to be honest, it is excellent for interstate and two-lane highway driving now and I do not see any significant improvement that can be made with updates for the C2.

@@deravd it should not affect your warranty. When you sell the car or go in for warranty service most dealers have never heard of the comma unit and they will think it is just a GPS unit. If you sell the car while it is still in warranty you will simply remove the comma unit and no one will ever know it's been there.
What is the weight difference? I've had issues with stock c2 mount failing between the adhesive and the mount (not between the windshield and the adhesive). Trying to figure out if the c3 is less or more likely to fall.
Hi Logan, very nice comparison video. I have a Comma 2 and enjoy using it in highway driving everyday. I was wondering will Comma 3 hardware help with stop-n-go for Toyota Camry SE? I am thinking about replacing the C2 with C3, but not could not justify it if it is simply has more cameras, larger screen and same Openpilot 0.8.x. I hope better version of software might help convince me to replace the C2.
I have a 2, and my biggest concern is that it wont be any better on a Honda Ridgeline if I switched to the 3. Its already good, and the limits seem to be on my car not the comma.. Thoughts?

Yes. It isn't relying on map data or gps for driving model during use. Eventually when navigate on openpilot is added it will need to pull basic map data for navigation over LTE.
I bought a comma 2 a couple days before the comma 3 came out. So I returned the comma 2 and ordered the 3. Still waiting on it to be shipped 😅🙃 I took a 6500 mile road trip with the comma 2 before I returned it and it drove 5200 of those miles. 😵
BlueBox Co-Pilot is an alternative devkit shipping Feb 2022 that will run on OP. They say it'll contribute to the AI OP driving model. It'll be interesting to see if that devkit will support stop sings and traffic lights like the C3 should in the near future.
Hey! I know it's been a couple years since you've released a video, but I would love an update to this video now that comma 2 has been left behind a bit with software updates and experimental modes are now out for the comma 3!
Do you know if the Comma2 is still being supported bc I can't seem to upgrade my Comma2 to latest version of Openpilot. It's currently stuck at Version 0.8.13 when the latest version is Version 0.8.15.
Currently no wifi or internet needed for driving but if you want the navigation feature and future navigation related updates you'll need LTE connection for loading and updating maps and nav data which is offered by Comma currently for $25 per month. It is open source and I've already seen other people getting navigation working on the Eon/Comma2 platform with their own internet connection.
My Comma two struggles with 50-60 mph roads that have stop lights, where you're coming up on a stopped car at 50 mph. 100% of the time I have to intervene because I don't think it can sense that car far back enough to begin braking in anything but an all out emergency braking situation. It would be nice to see it start to sense it 10-15 seconds back. Does the zoom camera help with that situation? That's about the number 1 annoyance I have with the Comma Two. Otherwise, it's a fantastic device.
Is your car using OpenPilot ACC and not stock? It definitely can pick up leads a bit better but 60mph up to stopped cars is still a challenge because currently when pairing with radar it’s limited to how far the radar detects vehicles so it can pair a radar point. Hopefully will get better with vision only acc.
After comma failed to have an upgrade option for supporters who had just bought the comma two before the surprise c3 announcement, 🤬 I will never buy any comma device ever again. If c2 eventually becomes obsolete, I will upgrade to the Bluebox Co-pilot instead of c*.
Wtf the point of the announcement is to not be a surprise when it comes out. You can't say "surprise announcement". You also bought the c2 for the price you paid because it was worth it, not because you were promised an upgrade in the future. Those are separate issues.

It always a good move when companies release a hardware and a software that shows why the hardware is good and people needs to buy it, looks Comma AI didn't do this tho
Yeah, the Lynx was a better handheld hardware-wise than the Gameboy, yet where did no software get Atari on that one? Until there's *significant* software features and upgrades on the Comma Three device only, I don't see the point.
