Connor was great in the blue card segment and I love watching this channel, and it shows me what the other departments show us what they do at the fire station.

Liked this a lot. I've been watching Chief Decker at the Newark FD for a few months. He parks his vehicle with the best view of the scene he can get and then we hear all the audio while we see the firefighters working. Gave me a much better idea of all the pieces and how they all work together. Between that and your firefighter training school videos I think I'm ready to take a BC spot. ;-) Nice job!

This was a great video getting to see how training is done at SMFR and it appears it can be really intimidating with so many moving parts, just like in real life. A safe way to gain experience and think on your feet while maintaining control of the situation. It is better to experience it here in a safe environment where mistakes can made and noted and corrected so in the event one is dealing with the real thing they will know better how to act and react. Great video and it appears Conner did well in this situation. Thumbs up girl!

Hello Connor and Eric. GREAT set of programs and a great way to get your message out to the community. I have a few questions if you would let me: 1: were the two of you first firefighters with SMFR and worked your way into your current positions or were you hired as PIOs? 2: are you considered lieutenants or captains in the organizational chart? 3: what training do you have - other than fire training - i.e. degree in public relations or communications 4: do you do any active/immersive outreach programs for the local community, media, politicians? 5: do you video operations at active scenes to later review for training purposes and do you operate a drone over major incidents as a tool for the incident commander? I was a firefighter with the Alpha Fire Co., of State College, PA (Penn State) for 21 years and we did a lot of active outreach. I have a degree in telecommunications from Penn State and 8 years with PBS and enjoyed mixing the two. In my early years I did a lot of video & still documentation of investigations and operations besides being an active firefighter. For example, before I received my state vehicle rescue cert, I would ride out on the rescue and video the operations so we could debrief and review afterwords and look to see were we may need more training. But I digress. Our immersive outreach goes back many years. I would put fire demonstrations on at our training site for the news media. The biggest was Christmas tree fire safety combined with residential sprinklers. We burned 2 trees in separate rooms to show how fast a Christmas tree can burn. The second one was in a room with a functioning sprinkler head in it. One of the news videographer jumped out of his boots when teh sprinkler head popped off. One of the largest and longest lasting programs was our Firefighter For a Day Program, up to 5 members of the community would stay with us for a 26-27 hour to see what being a firefighter was like. The FFDs would meet at the station on a Friday at 5 PM to get assigned gear, taught how to put it on and then taught how to put on an SCBA. They would then join in the dinner and get assigned a bunk and spend the night with the crews at the station riding to calls throughout the night. In the morning they would then go to our SCBA training maze, then do 2 hours of vehicle extrication, fallowed by a few hours of fire operations. After the fire operations they would then each have the chance to put out car fires. The day would end with a family meal at the firehouse were the FFDs families would be invited to join us for dinner. Participants ranged from college students, local residents, news media members and politicians. The latter two groups were very helpful to the department. It let the media members and politicians see and feel what it is like to be firefighters giving them more understanding of out job and why we need them to help us do that job. The first two groups, students and local residents would lead to new members of our department. We didn't get 100% of the participants to join but close to 50%. I forgot to mention, we are all volunteer protecting 4 municipalities and Penn State's University Park Campus. In all, about 100,000 people. Have you ever done any programs like our Firefighter For a Day?

I'm surprised your BCs don't have aides! BC aides are incredibly valuable. They not only drive the chief to the scene, but they at some other departments also work as either inside or outside safety officers on fire grounds. I have also known where the aides can operate as staging officers as well as in an EMS Duty Officer. While responding to the incident, the BC can concentrate more on the incident while the aide operates the buggy safely. BTW, where BC Vargo get that jacket? I'm asking for a friend...

Usually department's are assigned shifts, each station has a shift roster each shift, which are usually made by the station's assigned battalion chief. My guess, since BC's are in-charge of staffing usually, they make contact with a Battalion and see when they can ride out, then ask the crew if they can make a video with them. Just my guess.

I am curious to know who provides fire fighter rehab services to the south metro fire fighters when they are on the scene of fire incidents that require rehab? I am the Southeastern New Hampshire Hazmat District Rehab Team leader. I was given a task by our the hazmat district that we work with 3 years ago to put a rehab response team together to help first responders at emergancy and non emegancy scenes. Our rehab program consists of gross Decon, hydration, shelter, heating of first responder during the winter, cooling first responders during the summer months, we provide fire fighters with dry socks as well as dry gloves and hats, hand warms during the winter months we also provide food as well as medical monitoring when requested by ems on scene some of our members are not emts but some are. we are all volunteer we respond to about 30 calls a year or service we are in our 3rd year of operation. We respond to structure fires 2 alarms or greater brush fires 2 alarms or greater. hazmat incidents , MCI's we also do training stand bys for training burns ice rescue training and hot weather trainings. thank you for putting all these videos out they are very educational and help a lot keep up the great work you guys im look foward to next the day in life video coming up.
