Commandant Charlie Hurley, his Death and Funeral | Michael Collins Centre Castleview 

On the 19th of March 1921 the IRA Flying Column of the Third Cork Brigade won a famous victory against a much larger force of British Troops at Crossbarry Ambush.
Before the battle began the IRA suffered a huge setback, as the Officer in Command of the Third Cork Brigade, Commandant Charlie Hurley was shot dead in a gunfight with soldiers of the Essex Regiment in the Townland of Ballymurphy located a few kilometres from Crossbarry.
The story of his death and funeral afterwards in Clogagh, is one of the more extraordinary stories of the War of Independence in West Cork.
