I feel like these commanders are so well designed. Fairly unique and not too powerful, but not terrible either. I have a Mayael deck that is one of my go to’s, since it’s simple, but fun

Just got 2nd place with marath in a Cedh tournament yesterday (lost the tie breaker) Marath is super good as a midrange combo deck that controls anyone's small creatures and also super good at protecting your own creatures from things like orcish bowmasters. It also has so so so many different combo lines that don't even need to go infinite to end the game

I do think a lot of these commanders hold up to an extent. They might be underwhelming compared to the new shiny toys. "Why play Prossh when I can play Korvold?" This what the average weenies who build decks online say. I think Prossh is cooler. I like that he and Jeleva scale to get better the more they've been cast. Same with Marath for that matter. Derevi just cheats it and Oloro says: "you guys need to be on the battlefield? Ha!" Each deck got some command zone tech in a way and these ones might hold out the best. Nekuzar is a constant monster for the wheel people, and probably better than Jeleva, but she's way more fun. I think Gahiji is one of the few that got better because of so the tech he has access to now. A couple like Rubinia and Sekuar were always meh at best.

I loved running a Mayael deck when I was fairly new, very timmy. I feel like a lot of cards, even in Naya just do her but better. Still fun, but whiffing that activated ability blows. I'm fairly newer to MTG, like 17-18 so I'm familiar with a lot of these but honestly was cool seeing some I'd never heard of, even though they might seem meh in comparison.

Derevi and Prossh used to be OP, still strong. I have Derevi stax and as a planeswalker/Birthing Pod deck. Prossh with food chain and undying combos. Gahiji as group hug enchantress.

@bettercommander It's one of my favorites because it was the first time I was able to bridge the gap between myself and a group of friends that play slow battle cruiser magic. And it took me months.. They love to build ridiculous board states and ram into each other. I'm pretty sure the only removal they know is trample. I don't like that style but just couldn't build anything that didn't ruin what they were doing while having fun myself. No wheels Nekusar just accelerates the whole table and becomes a push your luck game. If they attack me that opens them up for crack back from the other huge board states. If they get too low on life then I can target them with a big draw spell when they attack me. No wheels to close the game out. No pillow fort to keep myself safe. And the table seems to be much happier losing to a draw spell than me removing their biggest threats. It's by far the hardest time I've ever had building a deck to match a pod, but easily the most rewarding once I'd done it.

rebuilding my marath right now. I frequently rebuild Sek'kuar due to my Oversized card of him and my custom graveborn tokens (the art is Eddie from the Iron Maiden Album No Prayer For The Dying - not their best album but the art works perfectly with Graveborn imo)

Marath is best Naya commaner, so versatile, it can be pinger commander, counters/modified matter, dinosaur enrage enabler, i even build hem as a modular deck! And stil a powerful not cEDH,but high power combo with Cryptic trilobite or just birthing pod /kiki combo.

I'm running a slightly more janky Nekusar nowadays, but I'm still running bowmasters, Wheel of Fortune, Bloodletter of Aclazotz, Bloodchief Ascension, and Underworld Breach to make up for it.

brother, you can get burned and dumped in the dumpsters nowadays for little quips like "has stood the test of time and the test of my testicles" - now I'm not out here trying to put you up on the spot brother, I'm just looking out for your best interest you know, I'm doing my own thing while keeping an eye on your 6 brother, cuz that's what bros are for am I right or am I right! On another note it was cool to see Mayael, I see her around in my pod alot, the deck she's in really slaps brother, been slapped around and off the table by her and her big beaters a few times. Anyways enjoy your july 2024 everyone, remember to stay hydrated out there and don't smoke cigarettes and don't play commander in simic because that's better commander. Peace!
