In re the bit you pointed out about Japan rushing straight past modernity into postmodernity, I'd like to propose that the videogame Mother 3 is an expression of what it felt like to live inside that change. It also has surrealist elements, as, indeed, the Mother series has in general.

I hadn't really thought of video games as poetry until I played The Whispered World by Daedalic with the commentary on. It was clear to me that they were very intentional about using poetic concepts in their storytelling, both textually and visually. A video game is poetic, to me, when the form and content complement and enhance one another; the work seems to take on a sense of wholeness. Edna and Harvey: The Breakout (also by Daedalic) did this strongly for me. Primordia by Wormwood Studios also did this well, I think. I have others on my list to play that I chose based on my perception of how the games accomplished this harmony.

Entwined is a game I consider visual poetry. The game is best played on a console with twin analog thumb-sticks, you control a bird and a fish that are in love and trying to become one. To achieve this you must collect objects by moving the two characters rhythmically and avoid barriers via simultaneous asynchronous movements. The game is very music oriented, giving you musical queues and responses as you do well. Each stage culminates in the fish and bird becoming one, and ascending to become a dragon. You then, as the dragon paint the sky with rainbows before bliss ends, the two split and the next stage begins.

If a game could be considered poetry, then i would certainly give games like journey and sword and swourcery (yes its spelled correctly) the stamp of poetry. But then the question comes to mind; what is What remains of Edith Finch? I'd like to call that game prose in the style of Virginia Woolfe's the Waves, given a playable texture. And then you'll find yourself wondering if Spec ops: The line is a greek tragedy. It feels like the medium should be more important than that. But what do i know? Maybe some types of art trancends the medium (or media) they are portrayed in? Wagner talked about having the Opera being a "Gesamtheitskunstverk", a "whole work of art", encompassing all types of media (known to him).

Ouroborosian. Also, Stellar Smooch is a fun little mobile game that is overtly poetic. I mean, you literally unlock lines of a poem with each level/puzzle.

about the video game/ poem thing: honestly games like Stardew Valley and Diary of a Spaceport Janitor make me think about my life differently. the repetitive days and the kinda boring grind u have to be on is one thing, but the fact that the "day" in Spaceport was so short definitely made me consider the pace of life. the contrast between the mundane grind and the mystical elements also grasps something about the human experience

Communism is not fascism. Stalin created an authoritarian, fascist state, but communism in and of itself is not a fascist or authoritarian concept, and neither is socialism. Stalin cared as much about communism and socialism as America cares about democracy, i.e., only to the degree that these things produced the results he wanted. He was not a true communist or a true socialist just as America is not a true democracy but an oligarchy.

"Hey Marx, I know you said to abolish state and market, but we combined them. Hope that's good enough" - Stalin (probably)
@Kagemusha08
@Kagemusha08 7 лет назад
True communism will always be authoritarian and fascist by extension. How else can you enforce equally distributing wealth, property etc. if not through force? There's a reason why every single country that embraces communism has turned into an oppressive, murderous regime despite having radically diffrent cultures: because the idea is rotten to it's very core and is profoundly anti-individual. If Marx saw what his ideas caused in the 20th century I think he'd want to kill himself.
@kappaross6124
@kappaross6124 7 лет назад
Kagemusha08 in theory, Communism would have a violent start but ultimately become peaceful. Marx wanted Communism to be enforced by human nature, not force. Communism is a great thing in theory, just not in practice. If we could pull it off correctly, maybe it'd turn out alright, but humanity has yet to actually attain true communism. It's very possible that it is, in fact, impossible to get to that point. Point is, there is not actually anything inherently violent about communism's endgame in theory, only in practice.

@DoodleDabble
@DoodleDabble 7 лет назад
Is a video game poetry? Most straightforward way to answer it: what is poetry? What constitutes it? And can those be carried over to video games? I propose that a visual medium can parallel poetry, using its visuals and narrative in the same way a poem uses its word choice. In modern poetry, rules have less of a reign over the syntax, but devices such as alliteration, assonance, and onomonopia. Visual mediums have their own devices, often ones that portray art in ways words cannot. The first to come to mind is Rebecca Sugar's "Singles", the first 10 minutes of "Up", or "Dog of Wisdom", which is already considered by some to be a surrealist masterpiece. Poets purposefully choose their words for the rhythm of their piece, so why can't a visual piece of art be poet*ic* at the very least? What other things have been considered poetry? The first thing to come to my mind is the correlation between Japanese visual presentation and poetry. In Miyazaki's movies, for example, there is a moment of silence in both the audio and the narrative, usually where you just take in the scene and let the events of the movie sink in. In Japanese poetry, there is a literary device which uses a syllable character as a beat between two stanzas, for the same reason Miyazaki uses it. Could Miyazaki's work be considered poetry?

The missing photorealism and presence of logic could both be chalked up to the video game medium. Realism in games has always been relative to the technology, and gamers appreciate this. At the time the original was released, these were some of the most "detailed" graphics you could see on an 8-bit system due to very clever art and asset work. Since then the series has embraced a very cartoony aesthetic, but I think that has more to do with marketing and the need to keep Mario & friends recognizable once technology did move beyond those limitations. I also believe that having "logic" aka systems aka gameplay is intrinsic to what makes a game a game. You can't have gameplay without systems. If you accept that, you can see how the systems themselves are pretty crazy.

Thank you so much for this channel it just doesn't put a foot wrong, sad to see it going. Comparing specifically non-text-based games like Journey and Flower to poems is interesting to me... but if we try to use poems as a model for other mediums that aren't text, surely it kinda applies to everything? It's such a broad comparison. Like... a poem that doesn't use text, is just music? Is it not? A song (I suppose a piece, not a song, if we are removing text) could abide by the same structure as a poem, as could a video/film, and a game could too. Levels in a game could structurally be close to verses/stanzas I suppose. The use of the term "poem" has become more like a basic way of talking about language/text that is more experimental/less concerned with narrative than other forms of writing... I guess some games could be seen this way, as the "poem" of video games. What I think is interesting with comparisons like this, however, is the time-based nature of text as a medium. Text has a beginning and an end, and requires time to consume... like music... like videos/films. But it seems to me that games exist in a space separate from this. Games have beginnings and ends, sure, but if left on their own, they can remain in an "on" state, theoretically forever. Games kinda exist outside of time I think. Open world games don't require player input, the world will continue to exist in some way. Paintings/sculptures/installations seem more of an apt comparison to me. Although I guess games are kinda a combination of everything up till now - the ultimate medium. But either way, I also wanted to say that your video about hotel rooms - are all hotel rooms the same place? - inspired me greatly. I ended up using it, and Joanna Walsh's Hotel book that you cite, for the basis of an installation I made. I'll put a little link in a second comment so this doesn't get flagged.

Looking at peoples reactions to the New Donk City portion of the upcoming game Mario Odyssey I think that section of a Mario game at least is photorealistic enough to be more surrealist. The normal human models and city disrupted with a hat spaceship and Mario's not quite human prescence while he possesses people with his hat and collects weird giant coins.

'Braid' feels like poetry ....pretentious feeling, makes me think strange things, vaguely unsatisfying, and hard to understand but fun. saying that video games are like poetry to me is like unto saying that a cinematic masterpiece is like a painting. they both contain pleasing or disturbing images and try to inform through a visual medium, but to me its still apples to oranges. Speaking of video games I just picked up Pyre from the guys that made Bastion and Transistor. Amazing games with just utterly jaw dropping musical scores. cant recommend any of them highly enough. If you don't play them then you oughta give the soundtracks a listen if nothing else....unless you don't like awesome good music that is.
