I have so much respect for you for keeping an open mind during this. It always baffled me how many people talked bad about Seagal but the guy is a true legend and has been a major inspiration for me and my fighting style.

I am so glad you posted this. The other one up for viewing I saw tended to lean to the negative more than the positive advice Segal Sensei was imparting to the young man it is surprisingly the same I tell my fellow aikidoka. Fight your way but make the attacker think you're going to fight his way take a couple minor hits until they get overconfident then they become sloppy. Then show them all kind of Aiki-Love LOL. There was some confusion on making and striking with the fist. The fist He shows is not a karate fist but a Chinese kung fu fist which is much stronger and packs more power. Yes, there are things the master's held back until they felt your character was correct to know certain knowledge which could cause serious injury; I know this it is my way also. Yep, the dojo wars in the 60 - 70's happened. I could go on explaining what was missed but it's a lot to write and I have a class to attend. Keep up the great work.

Back when I was younger I trained at Orange County Aikido where Steven Segal had earned his first dan black belt and prior to going over to Japan. The older guys there would tell stories about Steve or 'stevie' as they joked but what you take away from them was that Steven Segal had a tough, bold and commanding presence and just a tornado on the mat.

I really appreciate your views and opinions on Aikido, and I want to thank you for sharing them with your audience! There are precious few defenders of it out there these days, and even fewer that understand what they're talking about in regards to the subject. You're saying the things that need to be said.

I have study martial arts all my life. I have also worked in some very tough bars as a bouncer I worked with Steven Seagal as his stuntman a few times. He is a big man and he keeps to him self. He was very nice to me. As I have said before Steven Seagal is for real he knows his stuff and he knows what he is talking about.

I did watch the two videos of Steven Seagal from Jesse. It was great. As a karate instructor I will tell my students that an expert is not he or she who does complicated techniques but makes his simple techniques flawless. If a yellow belt black belt does a front kick their should be a difference. Fear not who does 1000 techniques but fear who does a technique 10000 times.

There's been a lot of negativity towards Steven about his personality and his fighting, but no hard facts about any of it. The one thing I really respect about him is that he doesn't argue with any of it, he just does his own thing and takes off like he mentioned. No point giving these haters any attention, especially when none of them would ever say anything to his face.

Grew up watching Steven Seagal and was always a big fan of his unique style in the old days. I also grew up boxing and got into Brazilian jiu-jitsu just after high school. Not quite sure how applicable Aikido is compared to the aforementioned Styles and many others you see in MMA today. But I can appreciate it for what it is and still really enjoy his old movies.

Just think... if Segal went on Jesse's channel, maybe he will come on this channel.

I love Steven Seagal. I’m 45 now and I’ve grown up with Bruce Lee, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, van dame, and Seagal. And talk about who’s best. The talk would never stop. And still doesn’t lol. I follow Jessie Enkamp and love his work. I’m a 3rd degree in kempo and black sash in wing Chun. My kids are now doing karate and I’m introducing the stars to them. Seagal is right on so many levels and he is a true master. I’m not perfect I train hard I’m fit and healthy and I demonstrated basic kata tonight and stuffed up. And how many times have I done it. 1000’s of times. We are all human. I respect mma but I don’t agree with it I don’t think they’re martial artists but they can learn to fight fast but empty later. Martial arts is a life’s long journey

I heard an interview long ago with Seagal and how he grew up a white kid in Japan with still a post war attitude and first learning martial arts, thry kicked the crap out of him every day, trying to make him quit but, he didn't and eventually learned how not to be beaten up and I can attest to the fact that this makes you very tough. Physically *and* mentally. I had similar things happen. The movement of Aikido is not just "oh, I dropped my sword," it's how to use your hands like swords and all the techniques with that. Rogan's whole mindset about fighting is MMA, etc. He doesn't stop to realize there are no rules, that's a huge difference. I'm 62 and been involved with martial arts since '73. I started in a west coast, Ed Parker style school, then private instructions from someone who grew up in the martial arts academy in Okinawa and goes directly to Mr Funakoshi and I was lucky enough to be in a Norris school late 70s to early 80s. I've fought in tournaments like the Ed Parker Invitational and in street and bar fights and fighting on the military and I concur, the vast majority of the fights I saw or were involved in, never went to ground combat. This all came about when the Gracies took over MMA fights from the beginning and decided this. Ground fighting skills are valuable but infrequently used tools. You want the fight to end now so, you don't go to the ground or your dead, you don't stand around doing nothing, waiting to counter what he's decided to do, you'll lose. You need to wait for the opportunity and take the guy out.

I started martial arts in the early 80s and following a lifetime of martial arts and 30 yrs law enforcement experience I believe everything these days Is compared to Ufc. Traditional martial arts are however making a comeback. Mr Segal is the real deal a true martial artist and a lifelong ambassador who can absolutely use his Aikido in a real situation. The haters mostly are not martial artists and are looking for click bait on social media. Keep up the great work and let the truth shine.

What people miss when training weapons, sword,stick etc is the confidence ,timing,distancing,angling.What we use is a rokushaku bo 6ft stick swinging to the body and the person must move into the small gap and over time we speed it up untill its random and as fast as you can.This builds confidence if you can avoid a weapon that if it connects could hurt you badly or worse then a punch ,grab ,tackle,kick are nothing so Segal sensei using his hands like a sword makes perfect sense for those who have trained this way, oss

Totally agree that the statement "most fights go to the ground" is a BJJ sales pitch. A devastating ground maneuver is to allow yourself to go to the ground and then pull the Girlfriend with a Beer Bottle move.

Straight to the target with proper leverage. That is what he is talking about. My right front snap kick could kill. Emphasize the snap. In my Jeet Kune Do, it is Aikido that remains the foundation.

It's really hard to rescue Seagal from the weight of his recent personal history. Professionally, he rarely seems bothered these days, and personally, even if some of the more salacious ( and downright unpleasant) accusations are untrue, it's hard to overlook the obvious indulgence and vanity in the man's appearance. That being said, he always holds a place in my heart. The impact of those first five movies and the man himself, was absolutely phenomenal. I am of an age where I saw them as they were first released, waited with my friends for the next one, and read every single piece of information I could get my hands on, first in the martial arts press and later in the movie magazines when he became more mainstream. You can't undersell how awesome he was. Unlike alot of people, I never doubted his physical ability. But I have questioned the legitimacy of his spirituality. I remember my martial arts teacher saying " the best lesson we teach is the one we most need to learn ourselves". I'm noone to judge though. I'm sure we all want Steven to be the man we've always hoped he was. I would love to see him motivated and active again, but at this point it probably isn't in the cards. A perfect example of Steven Seagal saying, "do not fight your opponent's fight", is when Holly Combs fought Rhonda Rousey. If you noticed Combs was circling Rousey and always moving sideways in a circle making Rhonda chase her... Then she would move in and do her boxing strikes. Which she is excellent at, and really cleaning Rhonda's clock. Then she has a devastating kick to the Head which has knocked out many opponents. When she was circling and undercutting Rhonda's punches and stepping behind her she'd come up with her Kick to Rhonda's head or her famous front kick. This front kick was usually a setup for a quick jab or for her sidekick to the Head, if the moment was right. And when she undercut Rhonda a few times and stepped behind her when Rhonda turned around, she let loose a flurry of punches and then backed off again. She did show jujitsu or judo expertise because she actually flipped Rhonda a few times. However for the majority of the fight, she stayed away from Rhonda stepped in, did her damage and then stepped back out, she played a standing game with Rhonda. Holly knew that any extensive ground fighting with Rhonda, Holly would lose the fight. One thing I really respect about Holly Combs is she's not just a very good fighter, she's a very smart fighter. The few times that she has lost when choked out, could really happen to anyone in the ring from any opponent. It's part of the MMA ground game and everybody knows how to do it. Well Samurai that's my two cents for what it's worth! Great Show! I Love Your fairness to all sides by talking to each side and challenging them. But I highly Respect your Commen Sense and soft spokeness and Your ability to actually Listen to the other side without interrupting. Letting them have Their say. I believe the real issue of why practitioners cant understand the contexts of old martial arts is because they are blending the lines. People hear the word “Fight” and immediately put in the context of a “Consensual Agreement”. When in fact these old systems deal with “Assaults”. Techniques were meant to neutralize threats, whether that meant finish them by maiming/killing or creating enough space to escape, assess the situation (Zanshin) or deploy a force multiplier. Seagal’s Aikido is no joke....his acting in movies and tv is not the greatest but lots of respect for his teaching and dedication

I watched this video this morning. Great video, love to see Seagal like this! Very informative and shows how great of a guy he can be.

I noticed in Steven Seagal movies just by chance a couple of years ago how he’s feet are always underneath his hips , he’s got really good balance , another tell tell sign of a sign of a good fighter .

People are so full of hate and despise for Seagal that they just don't think. I see we notice these same things. It's so stupid to claim "Seagal didn't teach Mashida the front kick" and then they will laugh at Seagal. There are different ways to do a kick. There are variations. You can push and you can stab. You can telegraph your strike or you can disguise your attack. People are so feeble minded. That doesn't make me laugh. It makes me sad.

I'll probably get flamed for this but it's great to be able to express opinions on here. I was totally obsessed with Seagals style of Aikido when I was 10 years old in 1990. This resulted in me studying Aikido and his style for 25 years; including travelling to Japan in 2007 to visit his old dojo. And yes, I can prove it all. As much as I used to respect Seagal, It's a shame what happened to him. Unfortunately his arrogance, many tall tales resulted in the vast majority of his students leaving him. I still don't know why he continues with the tales. For example; in this interview he says he visited James Coburns house many times and Bruce was often there. That can't be true because Bruce Lee died in 1973 making Seagal 21. He had gone to Japan then for 8 years and didn't meet James Coburn till he came back to the states. We know this is true because his fullerton college records were published. It's just flat out tales. And i don't know why he keeps doing it. He was always described as "A complicated character with a talent for tall tales". As much as i used to respect his Aikido watching his films and studying it solid for 25 years, it's not practical, even Seagals, against a fighter who knows what they are doing. He repeats the same thing over and over again. You can see in this video how staged it is. Firstly, he needs his own uke to make him look great and when he does the Yubi Dori (finger grab) you can tell he has told Jeese beforehand to keep his hands out so he could grab them and do is trademark yubi dori. There are so many flaws with this interview It would take me all day to go through it. I'm sorry but Seagal is dellusional if he even thinks any of that stuff would work on a good MMA fighter. He doesn't realise those are Super athletes. They are not cooperating ukes that he has been used to training and tecahing his whole life. Honestly, its embarrassing and i wish he would stop. Just give credit where credit is due. Even his tales about being challenged in Japan are nonsense. His ex-wife in Japan Miyako debunked those and said the worst thing that ever happened was a guy came into the dojo a bit drunk the one evening. And after being in Japan and seeing how they are i believe her. I could go on. Seagal is an amazing Aikidoka (the best I have ever seen) but thats it and talking as though he could beat these pro fighters is just cringe worthy. I have done Seagals Aikido 25 years and Gracie Jiu Jitsu is just head and shoulders above. Believe me, I tried. in 2007 when i had my first class of Gracie Jiu Jitsu I was told I could try and do whatever I like, nothing off limits. Anything I had learnt from Aikido. The result: I didn't last 10 seconds. I didn't let my ego get the better of me. I signed up to Gracie Jiu Jitsu that day in 2007 and have never looked back. Aikido is stuck way in the past. And thank goodness I left and moved on. Probably against a punk, drunk or really poor fighter its useful but don't go comparing it to these super athletes in the UFC. It's not even a discussion in my opinion. Seagal has been used to being the top person and i can tell he doesn't like how MMA and UFC turned the martial arts world on its head. And all his talk of secret techniques just flat out makes me laugh. Steven, please stop. You gave the world some amazing films and inspired a lot of people including me but stop trying to hang on to fame as though you are still the action start of the late 80's early 90's. It's over. It was over a long time ago. Things are very different now. The one thing I do agree with him on in this interview is this: the pathological lies from Gene Labelle and the others he is referring to and which has unfortunately plagued him. Total lies. However Seagal hasn't helped because of all his tall tales and he is the author of his own mis fortune to a degree. What a rant. I could say so much more. It's jut sad to see Seagal behave like this but he'll never change. It's in his DNA.

`I was about 12 years old, and a gangly beginner in a Yoshukai ((hard style) karate class, and somehow aikido came up, and my friends and I started cackling and making tai chi jokes, and grandpa jokes. My sensei at the time looked at me and laughed. He said, "You probably won't make it to the level where you learn real aikido in our school." I laughed again, wondering why I'd want to suffer through learning all the basics, just to learn "aikido" in the higher belts. He smiled at me, and his hand whipped out like a rattlesnake, and his finger landed in a soft spot behind my ear, pressing lightly, all in an instant, I could feel pressure, and the sensation of my ear actually lifting from the back. He said, "Why would you need to know how to take someone's ear off?" I've learned a lot since then, but he was right about me not making it to those levels in karate!

Everyone hating on Aikido: I have studied it off and on all my life and I know it is the one art that has saved my teeth. Most of my fights have been multiple opponents. WHAT WILL U GRAPPLERS DO AGAINST 5 PEOPLE? Hmmmmm

Nice energic kicks in your demo video, you could show us more of your demos. Definitely better than imitating JCVD kicks. It looks always funny when someone tries to imitate JCVD's kicks, nobody can do it, nobody. If even Scott Adkins says so, that it must be true.

He went over to Japan and studied as well as taught classes. He is fluent in both speaking in japanese and a true Aikido Master. The way he taught is very smart, he talks about the spiritual first, and then move on to application. Very straight to the point! This has been very in-lighting. This has made me re evaluate my position on Steven Seagal. I was lightening to Joe Rogan's and Bass Rutton's opiion on Seagal, plus all of the videos out there on RU-vid trashing him. I have always pride my self on been able to research and keep an open mind about any subject or person. But I have to say this video took me by surprise. Thank you!

I agree with everything Segal is saying coming from a traditional martial art myself, however everything I’m seeing on this video is very similar to Wing Chun moves starting with the centre line front kick which Wing Chun probably have the patent on 😂, however redirection of the opponent as shown by Segal which is the same as Bong Sau (overlapping elbow) followed by a Lap Sau allowing you to step over your opponents upper body defences and into close range proximity and thereby executing an almost arm bar Aikido like movement across the throat and allowing you to taking your opponent down! Even the knife hand close range chop to the board is Wing Chun! The jabs to the eyes and throat is known as Bil Jee! Overall I see very little Aikido in what I’m seeing here, or I don’t know enough about his style in this video, or maybe the two arts are very similar, besides the limb and joint locking and throws which aren’t in Wing Chun and which we believe restricts your own movements if the opponent is constantly moving and attacking not giving his hand to demonstrate, but then again Segal is very tall, so he can probably overpower the opponent using the movements and then it’s a bonus if he manages to get a hold of your joints for manipulation! 🤷🏽‍♂️

Wing Chun also uses finger jabs to the throat and just as effective side of the open hand strikes to the throat. Making a connection with the opponent's arm and sliding up it until you naturally reach the throat connecting with the side of your open hand is a great technique. You can hold the opponent's arm at the wrist with the non-striking hand as you slide up it with the striking hand also is very effective!

It's difficult to master another language including Japanese so that right there shows he's not a stupid man.

He is the best in Aikido and thanks to him I started to study in Aikido and now I hold 5th Dan Black belt. I thank Steven for that.

Another one ... Great breakdown VS! Was never a big Segal guy but I've got way more respect for him these days. I'm definitely more into his knowledge than his kicks though. And yes .. people just keep getting softer when it comes to martial arts & action movies. Being an 80s baby is the greatest gift ever for a martial artist.

Those ear, eye, throat, neck techs when someone dives for your legs and even when they wrap up your waist, were actually taught to a certain extent at a seminar we put on with Steven Seagal at the Ventura comm college back when the Gracies were dominating.

It may have been in the original video, but the way Steven describes blocking, the nuances and circular motion should be enough proof that he is a legit marital artist.

I've known this since the 1970's, but people wouldn't believe me until I let them attack me for real.... Seagal is legit no two ways about it!! .... You can't fight non resistance or a target that isn't there... Other than that, real aikido really works... I learnt the hard aikido way for ten years before I could understand the "soft" subtle stuff... I can do both and I know that Aikido can kill!! ... Its about knowing that "power" but never using it to its fullest conclusion.... A real pacifist is someone who can kill in the blink of an eye, but chooses not too.... Thats all I'm saying....

I'm actually glad that you're one of the many intelligent people who analyze a lot and also study about a martial artist if he's a true master or not, I'm telling you this because many people especially on social media repeat like a broken record as if Seagal were a liar or coward, it would be nice if you could do a live interview with him since no one says that he can't accept fighting challenges unless they attack him directly and he has to defend himself, so I have no doubt that Seagal forgave Van Damme that time at the party and with the Bob Wall theme the latter never tried to attack him, besides he was already a little older no one says either that Seagal is vegetarian and loves animals but anyway greetings friend ;)

Love the pelts and movie cover analogy. Steven Seagal has a bad rap for his personality, fair or not, and unfortunately that has bled into a critique of his martial arts. I will always enjoy his movies, and martial art movies in general. I will judge him AFTER I meet him, not before. Love the fairness this channel brings. Refreshing.

The interview was great and have to tell you even though i didn't believe aikido is that useful, Seagal is still a master at his craft/martial art. Now have to say after watching that seagal interview and yours on Frank Dux, this guys have legit martial arts background regardless if people wants to give credit or not

All of a sudden I've been projected in an alternate reality where Steven Seagal is legit.

Rogan has next to no experience with Chinese martial arts or real fighting. You have to remember that his entire experience with martial arts has been sports and competition related stuff. I don’t know if he’s ever really had to defend himself. He bought into the bjj narrative the gracie’s and ufc pushed which people now realise doesn’t really work in a real life threatening scenario. He has said some positive things about Bruce lee but he’s not very informed on Bruce either. Said he used to think you could just kick people in the head and that was it. Pretty sure Bruce never said that or believed it. I will say that seagal has significantly more knowledge and experience with martial arts and real fighting than rogan has or ever will and so did Bruce Lee. Also want to mention seagal does a lot of other stuff like wing chun as well, and his aikido is not normal aikido. He talks about it in that video. I believe it’s called Tenshin Aikido and it’s completely offensive and brutal. As for Rokas, I think he just isn’t meant for martial arts. He seems completely disillusioned with everything. Like he’s totally lost.

Well in regards to this video I would agree with most of what was stated in this video. Keep in mind in WW2 the hand to hand combat instructors didn't focus on ground fighting. Also my experience in street fights/self-defense most fights are generally solved on your feet. So to me train everything but focus on stand up.

I grew up watching Seagal as well an only loved seeing him use Aikido. Definitely the first time I ever saw anyone do it was Seagal, as I grew up doing Taekwondo. Some ppl will just always be full of hate but true martial artist know he knows his stuff

In regards to secret techniques, especially Aikido, you have to be an uchi-deshi (live in student) for a while before an instructor will hold an advanced class and teach certain things that they won't show anyone else. In some dojos, being a walk in student or a weekend warrior means basics and nothing else. And if you want real training, some instructors expect you to be a personal Deshi, or apprentice. I was one of them ppl that thought is was a joke as i had boxing and Muay Thia under my belt then I trained with a friend in aikido and realized that shit is legit and you can really break bones with it and all his made more sense after that lol

I was surprised to see some of the pokes and pressure points Segal was doing. I was in Mantis style Kung-Fu for a few years as a teenager and there is so much that is similar. I was in a class where the Sigung was the highest ranked in the world at the time in Mantis style. I cannot for the life of my remember his first name as it was 27 years ago, but his last name was Chung.

That was a good kick and those MMA guys who did learn it from him praise him.

People often only see his movie career. Looking at his straight to DVD crap after his big successes fizzled out I can somehow see why his reputation took a hit. However this completely ignores his achievements in martial arts. Running a dojo in Japan as a white guy in the 70s should suffice to prove he is legit. He trained law enforcement and worked with some of the best and most respected martial artists of our times having their respect.

I took a couple years of judo and a year of tae Kwon do and then later took aikido as a”kinesiology” elective in college. My instructor at the time was 4th Dan at the time and he found out I did some previous training earlier in life. My instructor in college and I had a few sparring sessions and we took turns using just throws and locks to show the class what could be done…he reversed every throw I used on him and I was mostly successful in rolling or reversing out of his initial locks but he was almost always able to transition to a different lock or throw. Our longest single round was 4 minutes and then he got gassed and told the class I’m going to end it and bam I was on my back… then my face… and my arm was standing straight up and twisted back over my head. When working armed security I used some of the techniques I learned from aikido and judo to break up fights and control people at the bars I was working at

MMA has rules. The street has none. Seagal teaches to finish an opponent for real life.

First off I like Steven Segal. I think he’s legit. I trained aikido in my early 20’s because of Steven Segal. However , I have trained Street Jiu Jitsu for 5 years. And just like any other art, most students are not exposed to top secret sure fire lethal moves. please understand this, a little bit of Jiujitsu goes a long way. An Aikido practitioner would have to train 3-4 times longer than the bjj man to defeat him. UNLESS you train w a true master like Segal. And even then I believe you’d still have to train twice as long to master Akido because it’s so intricate.

This is the first time watching your clips, an to be far I wasn’t expecting your breakdown. Much like most I grow up watch Steve’s. An I spent a year doing Aikido it wasn’t for me, that said I agree with everything you say in this breakdown. An would just like to say thanks for an honest point of view. 🇬🇧🙏🏻

My first 2 hr Systema class was a big eye opener. A lot of the stuff that got me, I couldn't see or know where it was coming from or wat it was till after. Very unorthodox strikes & a lot of controlled but "heavy" contact. That instructor has a Belt in Kajukenbo & TKD, is a Sambo coach & a retired SWAT member. He wouldn't train Systema if he thot it was ineffective! 👊 Ya gotta feel it firsthand.

I studied Aikido a little because of Steven. Only gave it up because my school was too hard on the back and the striking was low level compared to my Karate training. Went back to Karate...but I always use Aikido principles.

Seagal is right. Never fight your opponent fight....BTW, Seagal also trained in Karate prior to his Aikido training which has roots from Aikijujutsu. 5 star vid VK.
