Been watching your stuff for a few years and this is the first time I’m seeing a commercial you shot. It’s crazy to watch you tear apart your own work when it looks better than probably 95% of what’s out there. It’s funny how almost all of the things you’re criticizing wouldn’t be things I noticed but I guess that just shows how much more there is to learn

"You never knew if the Ronin was gonna turn on or just $h!t itself." Oh man, you had me crying with the comments on the original Ronin! 😂 Had the exact same experiences with it back in the day. I remember having a huge scene with a bunch of firefighters, a massive fire burning, the director is waiting aaannnddd...stupid thing just keeps going limp. Oh man...don't miss those days! 😆

Ha. After the NYC Brooklyn bridge shot I thought oh no here comes the flat iron building aaaand... there it was. Still a really really cool commercial, concept and execution. Everyone can think of the, "I'd do this different shots" but when the work came rolling in for this it was justified. Great stuff.

i had a friend who was a guide on cycling trips around yellowstone. he said the worst part of his job was pretending he had never seen Old Faithful blow water that high before. I can only imagine the inner monologue of that location guy

You should actually be be very proud of this. A lot of us (over a certain age) will understand the limitations of the tools were using and the lack of resource you had to deal with. In which case, this film is outstanding.

Advanced Cinematography course really helped/helps me :) I am someone who got their B.A in Film production (CSUN) and recently got my MFA in Film Production (USC) and the course showed me things that we did not even go over in the 6 years of film school. It was a great compliment to everything I was being taught so I would HIGHLY suggest investing in the course. Also such a great breakdown if you follow the podcast and patreon you will understand this so much more. Also if you make it to the end of the video there is something special for you! :D

The greatest lessons are from mistakes :). Thanks for sharing Patrick. That was awesome. I think it's even easier to understand when seeing things that actually didn't go as planned. That polished stuff from sir Roger always looks so easy when you show the final result haha. BTW, in that scene in the theatre when the outside world is blown out - if you would protect the highlights instead - the inside of the theatre wouldn't turn into a pretty black void needing a lot of lights to fill it in back? (The lights that you didn't get to bring with you on the job). Seems like an interesting decision to make without any additional lights inside.

Great video. I think the biggest lesson to be learned from this production was barely mentioned in this, and it isn’t based off the lighting. It’s to question the production budget. How much were those producers taking from the budget? Because I’m willing to bet that’s what forced you to shoot in these brutal conditions. There’s a reason you didn’t have the help you needed and it’s likely not because the client couldn’t afford it. It’s because those producers made BANK off you killing yourself. We all have to do this at the beginning of our careers, and the sooner you learn to fight for your health, the better.

I shot two short films back in school on the Lomo Standard Speeds. The images they produced were amazing for the rental price but the ergonomics is not for the faint of heart. 😂

Lowering the ISO reduces the dynamic range so the highlights are easily clipped. Raising the ISO therefore increases the dynamic range around the highlights thus preserving more. ETTR is only exposing more within the same dynamic range @@ANRALOGI

This is on the right track but I think it's a bit misleading. The amount of dynamic range stays pretty consistent regardless of how high or low ISO is. There can be some variation, but it's much more important to see ISO as a tool to shift your dynamic range distribution between the highlights and shadows. You can define highlights and shadows in this case as anything above and below middle gray, respectively. So basically, ISO allows you to shift how high or low middle gray is relative to your camera's dynamic range. Lower ISO = more range in shadows (lower noise floor), less range in highlights. Higher ISO = less range in shadows (higher noise floor), more range in highlights. Remember that ISO does not affect what the camera sensor sees. As an example, lowering ISO by 1 stop below native will result in exposing your image 1 stop brighter than your camera sees it. This is, by definition, ETTR (exposing to the right). Similarly, raising your ISO above native will result in ETTL (exposing to the left). I hope this makes sense@@kasmedify

Also, as I aspire to make travel video/docs I'm wondering at what point I'd need work and shooting permits when going abroad. Did you really not have any for this production, especially in Singapore/Shanghai where filming&journalism are probably highly regulated?
