Today I join Scott and his crew Billy and Kier on the Commercial Fishing Vessel St George out of Eastbourne. I am spending a day in the life of a Cuttlefisherman. We work their commercial cuttlefish cages and land their catch to the local seafood merchant - / 100072586923906 . We discuss the methods, biology and life cycles of cuttlefish and also the restrictions and legislation around it.
Don't forget to check out our sister channel @thefishlockerworkshop for helpful reviews and videos.

@@TheFishLocker How do you claim this is a sustainable fishery? The ICES assessment indicated that the stock was likely to have been overfished and subject to overfishing. Concerns about biomass are supported by decreasing trends in English Channel cuttlefish landings and population indices, where recorded. French surveys, conducted by IFREMER, suggest a decreasing trend in abundance in the eastern part of the English Channel between 2006-2014. Marine Management Organisation reported landings in 2021 were also considerably below the five year average (2,616 tonnes versus 4,531 tonnes), which may be due to low stock levels. Additionally, although limited recent studies are available, studies indicate that the English Channel cuttlefish population is either fully or over exploited.

Your a man of many talents lad - the skipper would not have let you anywhere near the gear or processing if he had any doubt about your knowledge & understanding of pro boat work. It was obvious you were enjoying yourself as part of a grand team. Hats off to you John - a very interesting watch I must say.

Always interested in the commercial side of things. (from a game warden regulator from USA) I appreciate the effort commercial fishers to bring in the catch. They are vital to our economy and ecology. good on you all.

here in Whyalla South Australia we have the only known yearly aggregation of the giant cuttlefish. These grow up to 10kg and come to the rocky coast at Pt Lowly to breed at the start of winter. Some years ago the commercial fishers discovered this and decimated the breeding stock in one month. Fishing restrictions were implemented initially but now it is illegal to take them at any time of the year.
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker Год назад
Wow. 10kg is a big Cuttle. It is a shame they were exploited like that.

So glad that your secretary got to speak to their secretary. I am obviously taking the piss Brilliant episode as ever - Great books- old man and the sea and calm at sunset, calm at dawn - and obviously Moby So weird we dont eat seafood ( obviously i did have an issue of projectile vomiting at even smell of fish when little - my brothers necking herrings and sprats) Im good now Total respect.

Part of the issue is the season for Cuttles is so short and last year was our first year to be allowed to travel abroad after lockdown.

This was great John and I can hardly wait to see more like this,it’s always struck me as strange why there isn’t a market in this country for the rich sea food we have,nevertheless people have to make a living and you showing us the processes to me and others is very interesting, thanks for sharing and I liked the bit about the sea horses, they looked so delicate and fragile.👍🏻

Interesting fishing, 1st time seeing Cuttlefish fishing. I fished all my life in NL. Canada , Deep sea trawlers for Cod Fish, Red Fish, Halibut, mackerel, Capelin, Turbot. Some Atlantic Salmon in shore, cheers

What a fascinating insight into the the day in the life of commercial fishing boat and something I never thought about being caught as a species off our coast as it not seen in the fishmongers, supermarkets or many restaurants in the UK so don't think of it as a commercially viable catch. Look forward to next episode of a day in the life series
