Today I join Scott and his crew Billy and Kier on the Commercial Fishing Vessel St George out of Eastbourne. I am spending a day in the life of a Whelk fisherman. We work their commercial whelk pots and land their catch to the local seafood merchant - / 100072586923906 . We discuss the methods, biology and life cycles of whelks and also the seasons and importance for the local community.
Don't forget to check out our sister channel ‪@thefishlockerworkshop‬ for helpful reviews and videos. Including how to make the log stove used in this video.

Great video. That one fella throwing the hook in such a confined space did well. That crew has a very efficient rhythm and way about doing their business. I gotta say, your way of editing, narration, etc., is excellent, and is maybe the most important factor of why I watch, other than the cool content itself. I agree with you that dawn barely breaking is a great time of day. An example of what I mean by your excellent videos is like when you take the time to move the view to what you are talking about AND leaning over the side with the cam later to show another example. Well done. (Are those snails used at restaurants as escargot?) That's all one big longgg line of bait traps with and anchor on each end? You aren't kidding about keeping the line untangled and orderly. I'm sure that has been a hard lesson learned on multiple occasions in the past for some greenhorn. That body of water must really have a great deal of snails on the bottom. How long do those traps sit out before they haul them in again?

Great insight into the world of whelks, use them as bait when you go out on the boot.

Brilliant one John. An amazing insight into the commercial whelkers. Smart boat to boot. Well done. I have a heavy weight drop net for catching bait, that I bait up and leave when I am out in the boat around the my patch of the English Channel (West Sussex/Hants) and always have a good share of whelks when I pull it up. I don't fancy eating one though. I bet James don't touch them either.🤣

That was an excellent insight in WHELKS! Great crew. I’ve tried most things out of the sea, but not Whelks….. Have you John? Cook up maybe? I love my shellfish, so guess I wouldn’t hate them. The wife would!!! I often find old whelk pots washed up on my local coast after a blow, I guess some could easily be reused if not for whelks something else 🤔. Great series of vlogs👍

Yes mate they are very simple so could be fixed up. 👍🏻

I replied under Benny, so I hope you see that too. Great video! Those Whelks are so different than what I find on the coast of North Carolina...although, I think they are found in Maine, maybe? Looked like a LOT of heavy lifting and more hard work. These gentlemen have such coordination it's could be termed a ballet, the most difficult of all. Thank you again for taking us with you, and yes...very interesting! Wishing you all a wonderful week!

These videos are great John! Wonderful insight into a day in the life of a commercial fisherman. I've thoroughly enjoyed all the posts on this boat with this crew. The choreography of the crew is just meticulous and real pleasure to see professionals at work. Really nice job brother. Love home as always!
