Incident Video Release:
On May 30, 2021 at 7:50am, SBCoFD responded to a commercial structure fire located at the intersection of 16th Street and Arrowhead avenue in the City of San Bernardino. First arriving Truck arrived to find an established fire in a single story board up building. Firefighters found heavy fire loading with tires packed in multiple rooms to the ceiling level. Truck crews supported interior firefighters with vertical ventilation on the roof above. SBCoFD augmented the response with a second alarm assignment. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters reported.

Great work... with the exception of the Engine Co's spotting directly in front of the structure and taking the spot away from the Truck Co.

Looked like the team was working nicely. Size up done, walk around done as gates were getting popped. Doors in work as roof crew assembles. The roof vents as the water starts going on the red stuff and the roof operation is far enough away from the roof fire to not be a likely risk. I heard a room was stacked with tires, obviously an insurance job. The moment I got a search clear it is time to back out for a defense, no one's life is worth $$ on an insurance balance sheet on an abandoned building. I like the new hardware on the gate in back.....the owner was not screwing around with recovering his investment.

And cue East cost vs West coast ventilation battle… ready… go! Lol.

I’m not a firefighter, with that said I’ve seen a lot of east coast vents and west coast vents as a neutral fire buff exploring videos and science behind firefighting, for many years. I do like the west coast efficiency and speed, BUT the east coast deals with a whole lot more pitched roof, older structures and taller buildings. I’d honestly say it’s about equal given the circumstances. That’s my take.

I know it's a safety thing and understand why they do it in California, but the time that's wasted in gear & SCBA being donned on arrival changes the whole first 5 mins of an initial fire attack.
@Fireballsocal
@Fireballsocal 2 года назад
SCBA's are donned en route by the firefighters. Those donning gear on the ground might have been gaining access, catching hydrants, or running a hose lay before needing to attack the fire. Lots of jobs at any fire besides putting the wet stuff on the red stuff.
@SanBernardinoCoFFs

We are not sure exactly what you mean by donning gear on scene. Our standard involves being fully dressed in turnouts prior to response. Our newer equipment stores the breathing apparatus in an outside cabinet. We have adopted the clean cab approach which limits any potential projectiles during an accident and any contaminated potential carcinogen inside seating areas. There is minimal delay in exiting the cab to don an SCBA. One individual in the video who is assisting on gate forcible entry as lines are deployed was the first in engineer. He was active in getting a water supply, gaining access, and getting tools and equipment. This individual is not operating in an IDLH. Most drivers do not wear a turnout coat while responding.

Yeah... it's always best to just run in there without your turnouts and SCBA !

30 to 45 seconds is all we need for donning our air packs here in California. It doesn’t cause any delay. Me , 34 year professional FF here in the San Francisco Bay Area. All of our “ bread and butter” hose evolutions are constantly practiced at the Training Tower. Each evolution has been timed and is accurate so all crews arriving know how long it should take to wrap a hydrant and lay in, or pulling crossways that are preconnected and placing at the entry point, aerial ladder opps for setting up and placing the ladder at a particular height and flowing water and so on. All fun stuff. When the bell rings it all business. 🚒🇺🇸

No Reason to be on the roof, but they love to do it in Cal. Risking live for a vacant building.

At least it was a shallow roof pitch. I'm a probie here in Vermont and I hate heights so my legs are always shaking when doing roof work.

This is a standard operation in our district. With the proper experience and training this is no different than any operation in the fire service. Coordinating vertical ventilation with interior / fire attack is a critical fire ground component. This reduces flashover potential, increases visibility, improves conditions inside, and increase survivability for any potential trapped subjects. Like anything these operations are determined based on fire location / conditions, building / roof size up, and physical diagnostics.

@@thenussbaum44 That can be said about anything we do in the fire service. But again we refer you to the comment above. Based on all the conditions, size up, and diagnostics this is a valuable coordinated operation.

@@thenussbaum44 In this case it helped quite a bit. It acted as a fire break, and it gave easy access to the attic fire. Based on this video it helped with operations.

@@SanBernardinoCoFFs no need to be up there, on arrival this thing is far too gone. Put a tower up and stream the hell out of it. Not trying to be a keyboard jokey but it really made no sense to get on the roof. I understand the need to vent but the building is still very well involved when you made the decision to get on the roof. Cool that thing off and then do your venting operation.
