Hello and welcome to the fifth episode of Commodore 64 versus Amstrad CPC.
In this video, 8 games released in 1989 are shown running on both machines so you can see how different (or similar) they were.
Games like Mr. Heli, Test Drive 2, Robocop and 5 others.
Thanks for watching and let me know in the comments section below who "wins".
And, of course, see you in the next RetroNoName episode

explore the best of the Amstrad library (usually not the big-name UK stuff sadly), and you'll change your mind on scrolling. And the Amstrad definitely wins for 3D and isometric games too, due to the faster processor. C64 usually wins on sound and especially music though.

Thank you for these comparisons ! So much more interesting to watch than the usual C64 vs Spectrum videos because the CPC is much stronger than the ZX. Mr Heli is a great showcase of the strengths of each machine : gorgeous colours on the CPC, flawless arcade-like scrolling on the C64

More colorful than ZX but not "much stronger" ;)

@@tyruiiederttree3074 Well there's nothing the ZX can do that the CPC can't do better, so C64 vs ZX is like watching a premier league team play your local football club. The latter might win the odd match when the former are sick or drunk, but that's unusual. C64 vs CPC is a much more balanced competition and actually worth watching.

C64 seems to have higher resolution even in multicolor mode than CPC. So the sprites can be a bit smaller and the screen can show larger area with higher details. CPC graphics have more vibrant colours but chunky sprites. Don't forget, you are watching these vids on modern monitors with sharp images. Back then the CPCs had their own CRT monitors, where those colours bleeded very much.

Great comparison! For me sound is better on C64, about graphics, colours definitely CPC, but C64 somehow sharper, visible especially on RoboCop (always liked music from this game) and Rick Dangerous. And Stormlord looks amazing on both! Hard to believe it's only 16 colours. Also C64 is winner on Test Drive.

Did any CPC games run at 60 FPS?

To me (as a neutral who owned neither CPC or C64) your selections always seem to concentrate on games that are well-regarded on the C64. Why no Chase HQ, Double Dragon, Navy Moves, Forgotten Worlds, Strider or Guerrilla War? For these 8 the C64 wins overall though. I'd say Amstrad wins for Robocop and Continental Circus, maybe edges Mr. Heli, Rick probably a draw, Stormlord the C64 wins but only because of the music. Test Drive 2 is like a slideshow on Amstrad, slow but just about tolerable on C64. G'n'G and Butcher Hill not even close.

Believe it or not, I was actually a ZX Spectrum kid in the 80s, so trust me, there is no bias towards C64. ;) I try to involve games that are generally interesting to me. And these videos are all just for fun anyway, it's not like some serious competition (all these machines had games that were great - like Sorcery on CPC for example). Thanks for watching!

@@retrononame okay, definitely check out some of the games I've suggested on Amstrad across my responses though. A lot of responses show that people perhaps underestimate the Amstrad.

all pretty even till the last game, you'd be happy with either. C64 maybe just slightly in front on a few occasions.

You're kidding me mate - robcop is better on the cpc, ghouls and ghosts way, way better on the c64 as is Mr Heli. Stormlord is a poor game but again plays better on the c64 etc.

C64>>>>> that Robo music is sooooooo good, etched into my memory since I was kid)))

Excellent vid as ever. Generally for me, robcop wins slightly on the CPC. Rick Dangerous one of the best CPC games so matches the 64. 64 way ahead on others if you play both. Esp test drive and ghouls which is awful on the CPC. Push scrolling!

Na CPC so ponavadi uporabljali polovično resolucijo z vsemi možnimi barvami, zato izgledajo nekatere špile "kockasto". So pa meni osebno zelo všeč barve na CPC.
