A short rushed follow up on the series of repairs I did to my CD32. Primarily covers adjusting the 4 pots on the drive PCB. Also talk a little bit about the TF328 RAM and IDE board for the CD32 again, and a quick shout out to a couple of Amiga channels worth watching. Sorry it was a bit rushed, just wanted to wrap this up!

Voltage drop affects the CD unit - bad caps, dirty power socket or switch can give you CD read problems, leading you to think the laser is bad! The laser removed from this was re-fitted 03/03/2024 (Patreon exclusive video) and it works perfectly! *Amiga Channels* mjnurney ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-chIF8JrIFS4.html Riot Retro Gaming ru-vid.com Amiten TV ru-vid.com *RetroGameModz CD32 Laser Adjustment* (4 hours) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lZK3Rmerg1I.html

Thanks for this very good video, it helped me to get my Amiga CD32 drive reading again . 😃 I adjusted the laser just a tiny bit clockwise and it worked.

Another great learning opportunity for me. I had no idea about the four pots. Thanks for all the valuable info. Now I just need to find an NTSC CD32 -- the long search continues. =/

I once got remarks of dog hair on my carpet. Weird, because we don't have a dog. I just noticed that your carpet is immaculate. Like your manicure really Chris :)

Not as bad as the dreaded unboxing and case opening only to find a pube on the disc, Cash Converters never fails, ha, ha, ha!

Glad you sorted your laser out bud! I'm scared to touch the TEG FEB etc pots haha, I love my modded CD32, sooooo portable. When I met Solidcore from EAB a month back I took it all the way to Solihull with me in my messenger bag. Come to think of it, there is enough space in there to put a Li-Ion battery in there! All we would need is a screen built into a set of glasses hahah - Great video! I'll have to try and de-stratch my logo with some of that paint you were talking about. Thanks for the mention!

Hehe - don't adjust your drive PCB pots unless you know someone has messed with them! They probably won't need adjusting! You're welcome regards the shoutout - it was long overdue =D When I get better I will setup Skype and drop you a message!

Great stuff! Fun watching the changes on the RF signal. This bouncing of the RF signal is it normal? I understand it is from the wobble, but it doesn't have any effect on the data transfer?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 лет назад
The bouncing happens in sync with the lens bobbing up and down to match the "disc bobbing" - eg. on the outer tracks of the disc - the vertical wobble is more pronounced. When the lens is near to the centre (track 1) there's hardly any bobbing. The amazing thing is it doesnt effect data transfer (provided tracking and focussing is optimal). CD is quite amazing really when you think about how fast the laser is being scanned and how accurate the tracking and focussing is.

Hi GadgetUK164 I'm hoping you can help me, my CD32 plays original CDs fine, same with original music CDs but doesn't play copies unless I prop up the CD32 to almost vertical while it's trying to load the game or whatever. Do you think it would be a simple adjustment of the pots or something different?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 4 года назад
It sounds like possibly a worn carriage or something, but most likely bad tracking or focus coils. The tilt to its side is helping with either tracking or focus. Might be an idea to try swapping the laser unit out.

@@GadgetUK164 Thanks for the response and suggestion, the laser units don't seem too expensive so will look into it a bit further, thanks :)

The quality of these cheap replacements can be a bit hit and miss, if you see them for around £3 each, buy two or three (chances are one or two might not work well, 1 will be perfect). If you luck out and all 3 work, you can easily resell the spares on eBay with a bit of markup, or keep them as spares.

How did you set the scope so all lines start at the same point? My RFO signal doesn't look like yours, it's more like a random waveform.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 5 лет назад
Check your triggering settings. My trigger was set to auto. On AC coupling. The only other thing I can think of is to make sure you have a x10 probe! Without the higher impedance probing it can alter the signal.
@discoHR

Thanks. Managed to reproduce it on my digital oscilloscope... Trigger set to falling edge, display persistence set to 4-5 seconds (this setting is what made the difference), X offset can be used to align it to the left.
@GadgetUK164

Ah, yes - digital scopes it can be a pain! You have POV persistance of vision on an analogue scope.

Taiyo Yuden are still regarded to be the best quality blanks still available. Sony used to be good when they made their own discs, but I bought some recently and they're just branded Riteks. :/ However, these seem to be superior to CMC which have a poor reputation. Use something like IMGBurn to find out who made a blank. Verbatim means nothing really, the last batch of those I bought were CMC. Also, burning at 1x really shouldn't be necessary, 4x or 8x might help but dye quality is FAR more important. Try to stick with Ritek made discs, they're decent. Taiyo Yuden are superior but more costly and ... is it worth buying those just to make game burns?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 лет назад
Yeah, Ritek is best - never seen those for CDR media though? It's worth using Yuden for game burns, when the game is £100+ for an original etc =D

Great stuff, only really sad that TerribleFire, the one who invented the TF328 for the Amiga CD32 will most likely not make a accelerator board for the Amiga CD32 with a 68030 50MHz CPU, this is wat i and he said: AmigaWolf: Such a pity you made a TerribleFire 530 Accelerator PCB board for the Atari and Amiga 500 and 2000, but did not made one for the Amiga CD32. TerribleFire: The TF328 gives the CD32 a massive performance boost. AmigaWolf: Sorry but that's not true in apps and games, it's only a little bit faster because of the extra (fast) RAM, that's it. A massive boost is what you get with a faster CPU, like with a 68030 you did for the Amiga 500 and 2000, that makes a Amiga CD32 or 1200 a LOT faster then the standard 68020 CPU. TerribleFire: Its three times the speed? How is that only a little bit? In any case I asked the CD32 community if they wanted the 030 accelerator and they said no. Too many games would be incompatible. So thats why you didnt get it. AmigaWolf: TerribleFire that's not true, i had a SX32 Pro with a 68030 50MHz CPU and most games worked great, and that was with the original Amiga CD32 games, my father bought it when I was a teenager, but I exchanged it for a Amiga 1200 20 years ago (yes I know stupid of me, now you can get €5000,- for a SX32 Pro). TerribleFire: True or not the community said no to it. So its not happening. At least not by me. AmigaWolf: Wow that's really painful, because only 2,500 SX32 Pro units in total were made, and there were 100,000 Amiga CD32 made, so MOST people don't know what they are talking about :-( Phhhhhh wish i never exchanged my SX32 Pro for a Amiga 1200 +/- 20 years ago. As you can see in this video on 8:19 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CiQujSV1skw.html The link were i talked to TerribleFire: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OajY25w4VWk.html&lc=z22fvx35iwvkjzgekacdp432jzv0iwqh2s4tozzvd5hw03c010c.1518949136174068

I can see you really want a faster CPU there - it may still happen at some point, don't assume it will never happen. For one thing, because he's made the firmware open source, when he gets to the 1200 accelerator, anything he does there someone else could easily adapt for the TF328. They could in theory just lay the board out differently, and use the 1200 accelerator with some small changes. So even if he doesn't want to go down that road, I bet someone else will - likely using the open source designs he's creating and sharing. Personally I would rather get a 50Mhz or faster 030 for the 1200. Even better would be an 040 for either 1200 or CD32.

GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods yes I hope so, or a Vampire 4 for the Amiga CD32, that would be even better.
