Common Bipolar & Schizophrenia Tropes In TV & Movies 

The media tends to portray negative sides of mental illness. I was watching a series a few years ago (cant remember what it’s called) but the main character had bipolar disorder and she basically sold her meds treated her mum really badly, was abuse towards her younger sister, it was just all around horrible to watch. I try to avoid films about mental health because they always play into stereotypes.

….also movies that trivialize or treat mental illnesses as “funny” . That bothers me. Thanks for addressing this topic.

infinitely polar bear is a good one for bipolar disorder. It shows a man learning how to overcome his illness and be a really exceptional father. He struggles with his illness sometimes but always loves his family above all.

Excellent video! I agree that Schizophrenia and Bipolar are portrayed as very negative in the media. Even when I told my work that I have Schizophrenia they asked if if I was going to hurt someone. So it's definitely been ingrained in to society to think that these illnesses are a horror show. Again, Excellent video, I thought you articulated it very well.

When we have shootings here in the states they often mention the person had mental health problems. They aren't ever on medication.
