Common brake job mistakes

This is one of many examples I’ve seen over my career of improper brake work that lead to catastrophic failure. The two most common mistakes I see on brake work is failure to lubricate the brake caliper sliders or lubricating the caliper bolts instead of the sliders (yes sometimes they are the same part but not typically) and putting anti seize on the caliper bracket bolts. These mistakes will cost you a lot more money than paying a qualified shop to do it properly the first time. They are also dangerous!
The lack of slider lubrication in this video lead to the inability of the caliper to self center so the outside pad barely wore while the inside pad quickly wore to the point of metal on metal contact. The inner pad eventually feel out of the bracket letting the caliper pistons contact the rotor. This caused the pistons to fracture and a sudden loss of brake fluid and braking ability!
The second mistake of putting anti seize on caliper bracket bolts is dangerous as well. I’ve had many vehicles come in with the brake caliper bracket missing one or both bolts allowing it to fall into the inside of the wheel ruining the wheel and caliper. This can also cause the wheel to suddenly lock up when the caliper wedges itself between the wheel and hub. This hardware generally has blue lock tight on them to prevent this type of failure.
If you do your own brake work that’s great but please do it correctly for the safety of yourself and everyone else!

I made a mistake of using antiseize on my caliper bolts years ago. Some time later i was chasing a front end rattle over bumps. Couldn't find the source in the suspension. I discovered the source of the rattle going down the mountain pass. One of the bolts fell out. Luckily the caliper just rotated a bit and was grinding on the rotor. I degreased and torqued the rest of the bolts, wrapped some random bolt i found in the trunk with duct tape and drove the rest of the way home, 150 miles.
