Common & Glossy Buckthorn Education - Why it is the Worst Plant Ever

In this video I'm covering Common or Glossy Buckthorn and why it's such a terrible plant. I have a deep hatred for this plant.
It is an invasive shrub/tree like plant. It will choke-out and out-compete just about every other plant around it, is mildly toxic to birds and wildlife and has almost no insects that eat it, reproduces ridiculously fast, and is difficult to eradicate.

You can actually save a step. If you apply the herbicide to the cambium layer of the stump - that lighter wood at the outer 1/2 to 1" at the edge of the stump - you don't have to drill any holes. Applying herbicide to the inner wood just wastes chemical, because the sap that carries the product to the roots does not flow through the heartwood, but only through the sapwood - that outer wood layer just under the bark. Make sure you coat the stump continuously all the way around & you won't get any re-sprouting from a treated stump. Very nice video. The more people we can educate about these invasive species, the better our chances of controlling them.

I saw a video that I think was from the University of Minnesota that said if you have a Buckthorne that you saw it off about 2 feet above the ground and just strip any branches and go back several times over a year or so and keep stripping off any branches or suckers that pop out and then the root of the tree will eventually just die due to lack of nutrients and Sun. I wonder if that really works? Would be a nice way to not have to use chemicals.

Great video. I hope people realize how important buckthorn control is. There are lots of RU-vid videos on chemicals that can be used. The use of chemicals is safe and justified considering the devastation that buckthorn is and will cause in the future. There are many alternatives to glyphosate that actually work better. Thanks for posting this video.

Great video. Thanks. I dont drill holes, and never seen anyone recommend drilling holes. If only dear would eat buckthorn like goats do. I spent my whole day cutting buckthorn with my chainsaw and lobbers. Time well spent.

I apply Chem with a foam brush. Really good control that way. Don’t think the holes are necessary Tordon works great. Don’t spray it, apply directly and carefully. Get the big ones out first that are the berry producers. Then go back for the little ones.

Very informative. I have 13 acres & maybe .1% is solid buckthorn. I been removing those at my tree line & pulling the saplings. Going to try the treating method this fall.

Is it better to spray with brush and tree killer or drill holes, soak with kerosene and cover with hot coals or both?

Alder buckthorn plants are great for making black powder coal. They are also plants that provide food for bears and birds.

This video isn't about alder buckthorn. It's about the European invasive buckthorn.
