I have an ISF, I drive it everyday and have owned it for almost 2 years. Got it with 98k miles now I’m at 119k. So far I had: - Oil changes - Air Filter changed - Coolant - New Tires - Battery recently replaced - Air bag recall That’s really it. Crazy how high performance Lexus vehicles are with maintenance, compared to BMW for example. May get my tranny fluid flushed soon.
@jhblake123

1 the reason for the better reliability than German cars is because Lexus cars are not pushed to their limit by the designers and engineers. The last gen m3 for example made the same power as an ISF with a smaller engine displacement. German cars (especially recently) are made to perform not last.

Important, sure. But I am pretty rough on my car and don’t like spending $1000 every so often. $300 is a lot easier to spend on tires that wear out with my highway commuting. I haven’t had any issues with this brand, either.

You forgot to mention the brake caliper slider pins are always bad on these, the bad earth point for the battery goes rusty (wire brush on drill and copper grease before re fit), Wheel hubs get stuck in the carriers badly and the ABS sensor cables can fail not the sensor. I guess you dont have the diesel version in America but the EGR valve needs stripping and cleaning every 20,000 miles max. The drop links fail often, The oil filter housing contains a metal oil delivery tube that takes the pressure for the valve. This gets stuck in the old filter and thrown away (by mistake), the new filter then twists up and cloggs causing low oil pressure. They are great cars however! I have owned a few Lexus is from different generations and model types.

John H Honestly there isn’t much. It’s a really good car. I came over from Saab, so things for Lexus are so much easier to work on if you are a diy guy. The first thing I would do is definitely go the basic maintenance as soon as you can. I bought the cable that allows you to diagnose anything like the dealer would. The car doesn’t require much, so it’s nice to not have to worry about anything. Since I don’t have to be constantly fixing things, I can now start customizing stuff like Vland lights and getting some 370z rays wheels put on.

What to do? 1 - Change intake filter(only the filter, do not upgrade it).. 2 - Clean intake sensor. 3 - Change Anti Freeze (coolant) liquid = Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (9.1 Liters.). 4 - Change spark plugs if you are having troubles to start the car = DENSO FK20HBR11 = 1.1mm gap = iridium-tipped. 5 - Change Breaker fluid if dirty (FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3.). 6 - Upgrade alternator. 7 - Swap PCV valve. Additionally after 50k: Differential oil = 1.15 liters. Synthetic 75W-90 Gl-5. 9 - Change Oil Filter = K&N 10 - Change Oil = Synthetic Oil = 5W-30 (6.3 liters). Automatic Transmission Fluid = 1.8 liters, Toyota Genuine ATF WS. Clutch fluid = FMVSS No116 DOT 3. Brake fluid = FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3

Nice video. I recently got a JDM '06 IS350. It has only 126 000 km on the clock. Sadly, the interior panels were damaged by heat/sun. Leather is fine though. It'll take me some time to get use to the right-hand-side steering as well as some Japanese quirks the car has. Nonetheless, I feel like the car was good value considering the same money would've gotten me a German made car with 300 000 km mileage and rusted chassey. ✌

@@AlexanderGeorge because the Lexus is already fully paid for , it’s still running great, and sometimes I still do Rideshare on the mostly paid off Corolla so... @@KingDrewPhilip Post it for sale on offerup, craigs, Facebook, etc and get some cash for a is350 or a Z or even a stang. Or just to have cash to stay liquid instead of holding on to an ever depreciating asset. Is250s are a dime a dozen, Lexus made around 4 Is250s for every ONE is350. The 250 was the lease special and aimed at secretaries. The is350 has way more power (306 vs 204) and torque (277 vs 185). I just got my 350 last month. It's worth it because it rockets to 60mph in 5.0 seconds. I personally don't think a 250 is worth it since these cars are small, impractical (sure you know vs your corolla), insurance is a little high, mpg is about the same as a new modern truck...and the 250 is slow and can have carbon deposit issues. If you want a fun car to drive on weekends, buy something that's going up in value like an s2000, clean inegra/rsx/prelude...even a low mile older lexus that pop up every so often. A 99 gs400 popped up in my area last week, one owner family, 68k low miles, clean body/interior. AC had took a dump. Probably due for a timing belt and water pump change. $6,000. Car sold in a day. Would probably fetch $10k+ on bring a trailer with $1k diy maintenance and a detail. Would only go up in value. In fact, I'm kicking myself for not picking up a mint late 99 or 00 SC300 I saw on craigs last year or year before. It was $9 or 10k (i had cash, but was hesitant to use it all). I knew it would sell for a least $15k. Saw it sell on BaT two months later for $17 or 18k. Kicking myself for that.

Trans fluid change cost me like $60 in materials doing it myself and I only ever did it once. Spark plugs cost around $60 as well. Tires I got for $300. From my knowledge, excess carbon build up is a big issue in the 4cyl IS250. The manual even states you should give it the "Italian tune-up" every now and again. It's the reasons most owners 1st mods are oil catch cans. So my advice to you is to check google. I'm sure someone else has run into the same issue your having. I dont know how the intake manifolds work on the 4 cylinders but it sounds like its gonna require you to take the intake manifold off. Once you take it off, I advise you to also replace intake gaskets.

use heavier oil. 5w30 should be fine using high mileage as high mileage is intended to lower oil burning. Still will need to top up every once in a while but not as much.
@nordicpride9708
@nordicpride9708 4 года назад
MrMusicweekly This actually doesn’t typically work in practice. Different oil brands and base oils will burn more in some engines than others. Heavier oil does not burn off less, nor does it protect better. This has been proven in case studies over millions of miles. If you car calls for 5w-30 simply switching to a more viscous oil will not in itself slow consumption. Maybe that 5w-40 has a better base oil, different additives?!. This is what affects oil consumption , not viscosity. Also high mileage oils contain more seal swelling agents, typically more detergents and dispersants, more ZDDP or whatever anti wear additive that oil blender prefers (zddp is still king). Often a high mileage oil will also have a semi synthetic base oil or carrier oil and or a group III synthetic base. So you can see, if you have oil ring wear or sticking from carbon/varnish, a high mileage oil will do very little for this. It can swell the valve stem seals, however typically those are viton which likely will not swell in the presence of a swelling agent. So if a high mileage oil is working to reduce consumption, it’s usually a byproduct of the oils base stock. Unless it’s puking oil from a main seal in the driveway.

Thanks I know this video is a yr old but I discovered you from your Scotty Kilmer video.. I'm in the market for a lexus 2010ish Is or GS in Prestene condition with under 50,000 miles. I'll have saved enough to buy outright whichever model I decide on. Most likely I'll get the IS because it's cheaper but also more sporty to drive then the GS.its a tough choice considering the gs350 has over 100 hp more. The next vehicle I get will be my daily driver as I'm retiring my 02 honda accord coupe V6 200 hp stock car that's extremely well maintained and with only 124,000 miles on it. It's just time for an updated ride that will last me another 20 yrs.. and hopefully still look like new in 20 yrs as my honda does now. I believe from my research that either lexus I buy and maintain expertly will last for as long as I want it too especially since I now only average about 6000 miles a yr.

Marty, why the change from mobil 1 full synthetic high mileage to penzoil? Also, what happened to your megan strut tower bar??
@MartyMotoring
@MartyMotoring 4 года назад
Well, I wanted to try something different. Mobil 1 seemed to get pretty dark after only 4000 miles, and after trying Pennzoil out, the car runs smoother somehow and the oil is less burnt looking after the same mileage. We tried the Megan strut bar on my brothers ISF, and I just never put it back on. I should though!
@crimsonsr20
@crimsonsr20 4 года назад
@@MartyMotoring I've never trusted Pennzoil. My uncle did a valve train overhaul, and it leaves a yellowish residue on the valves and components that creates more friction. It's a dye that they use that leaves the residue. As for the color of the oil, it's normal, as the engine has direct injection and fuel injection, which leads to excess carbon build-up. The oil gets that dark because it's not letting the carbon leave deposits. There's a guy on youtube that stress tests oils in cold and hot applications, even going as far as boiling the oil beyond its threshold and seeing how well it performs lubrication.

You will definitely want to get the 350 instead. I test drove a 250, and man, the acceleration and speed is definitely notable. I have been an owner of a 350 for the past month, and I am glad I waited to check out a 350 before getting the 250. This car really has some power, and for the price, it is worth it. As far as the specs, they aren’t much different, interior wise. Comfortable to drive, okay gas mileage, alright sound system. One thing that I have seen that is common with the 350’s, is the rotten egg smell that comes from the exhaust area when you accelerate too hard too quick. Overall it hasn’t been a bad experience. (Mine has 187,000 miles on it)

No, you paid about retail for a car that wasn't maintained. Is250s are a dime a dozen. Lexus made 4 or 5 is250s for every ONE is350. Not to mention the problems early 250s have with carbon deposits. And yours is AWD? That's just another headache (hence the broken front axles). Hopefully it's your first car. Most people get hosed on their 1st unless there's a car guy in the family or friends.
