I thought I knew about make up, but the beauty industry has exploded so much, it's hard to keep up! I'm learning so much from you! In order to avoid the issue with skincare, I put my skincare on as soon as I get up and wait at least an hour before applying sunscreen and then make up 😊

OOOOOOO what about a video about on the spot solutions for the REAL mistakes that happen vs technical error! like a flakey dry patch, water marks from rain/tears, smudged mascara, too much brow product, a stubborn blemish, etc!! Things that could happen to even the best artists!

Both sides look the same in that lighting. I wish we could see like real (not ring type light) lighting, close up etc. I love when some do this because you can actually see what things look like in real life!! Much more helpful!!

Thanks Nikki. It’s good that a pro is showing the correct ways. Too many girls/women seem to believe whatever they see. I, for one, have very oily skin and have to be careful what I use or risk nasty breakouts.

I think there’s a lot of research with the recommended amount of spf and it can become a soupy mess if you do that. You’re coming from a makeup artist perspective but if you actually give the spf a few minutes to sink in you can apply the proper amount and should still be able to have a great base for makeup. Another option is to apply multiple light layers. That tends to work for me.

Thank you so much for commenting on this. Any level of protection is better than nothing but I agree with you it's better to apply the recommended amount (3 finger lengths) and let it dry down. Applying in layers is a great tip. Also, if your super oily, you didn't necessarily need to apply a moisturizer underneath. Your SPF will probably sink in better. This will probably be an unpopular opinion but if you have a really special event that you need your makeup to last all day for, if you're not going to be outside or the UV index is really low, just don't wear it. Even the best Asian sunscreens can break down makeup throughout the day.

The 'no foundation under the eyes' tip was a great pointer for me. I hadn't thought about the foundation formulas, which are not designed to be doing the same tasks as a concealer (or, at least, not as well). I am now going to avoid this slip up, haha, quite literally!

I do not agree on the amount of sunscreen one should use. The problem is that no sunscreen is formulated well enough to sit well under makeup if applied in the right amount. "A little bit goes a long way" does not work with sunscreen. Applying just a small dot of sunscreen is not going to do anything in terms of protection. If you need to wear makeup for a special occasion, ditch the sunscreen. If you want to wear makeup everyday + SPF (the right amount), you need to compromise makeup longevity and overall finish of it. Pro MUAs don't usually apply sunscreen on their clients because they know no matter the technique or the quantity, is not gonna look good. Also, you can't just go over with the makeup after applying sunscreen (or any other layer of skincare). I usually wait 1 min between each layer and at least 15 min before putting on sunscreen, and 15 min after applying sunscreen. I do not always have time for that and when I don't, I skin face cream and use a moisturising sunscreen.

I cannot recommend enough both Tatcha sunscreens (depends on your skin type and needs). They both feel great under makeup no matter the amount you use and have a good spf factor. I personally use the silk poreless one (spf 35 I think) for many years and it’s been working as a great smoothing primer on top of being a great non comedogenic spf product. 👌🏽

love the way you explain things ❤ can you make a tutorial on how to fix eyeliner after whole base and eye makeup is done but when we mess up the liner. if i use micellar water and remove the liner with q tip ,usually the concealer and everything underneath lifts off i just don’t know what to do and then i pack on the eye shadow that iused previously and it just looks different 🥲 it happened to me countless number of times ,still trying to get better 😅

I use more than 3 skin prep products and allow 10-15 min to absorb (while I get dressed, make coffee, etc). Before primer and makeup, I lightly press a single ply tissue all over my face to remove excess product, and my makeup lasts all day. I'd like to use less, but my less-than-flawless skin needs skincare during day.

Great tips, Nikki. It's also so important to let skincare productd, especially sunscreen, dry down before applying primer or foundation. I love the d'Alba First Spray Serum. I let it dry, the add my Vitamin C serum. And a lightweight Coq-10 serum. Then onto a moisturizer, used sparingly. A mineral sunscreen, which I let sit for about 20 mins. I have super dry skin, and this works for me. Yes. Smallest amount of primer. I never use a heavy foundation on my mature skin. No pilling, I get a very smooth application. I never take foundation up under my eyes. Fabulous idea with the setting spray. Thank you ever so much!💖💖

I don't use moisturiser because I use a moisturising sunscreen and give it about 15 minutes or so to dry down before putting makeup on. I also don't use primer, I don't think it's a necessary step for me.

What if your concealer is lighter or darker than your foundation and then there is a clear divide between your foundation and concealer? Bringing your foundation under the eyes is what makes everything look uniform and flawless for me because the concealer is always slightly different than my foundation. It's not because I want it that way, it's just that I'm not great at picking exact shades. However I do apply my concealer first and then my foundation.

Very thorough and definitely helpful! I ALWAYS wear foundation under my eyes, b/c I don’t use concealer. I don’t use concealers b/c it amplifies my wrinkles and makes me look older. What a great video, Nikki. You are such a good instructor! At 67 I always learn new things from you. I wear a moisturizer sunscreen under my foundation and I let it dry for about 5 minutes before applying my foundation. I do bring my foundation up too high though. Thanks again!❤️🙋‍♀️🇨🇦😊

Hey Nikki, I usually skip using concealer and opt for a light layer of tint or foundation under my eyes to even out my skin tone. I know foundation isn't typically recommended for under the eyes, but since I don't need much coverage there, I find it works for me. Is this approach a major beauty faux pas?

Lucky! If you didn't need concealer I wouldn't worry about applying just the tint or foundation. I think she just meant it's not great to layer them on top of one another.

I love the CT powder under my eyes but i also love the other two,the OG LM and the Givenchy one. It really does not matter what powder i use,in a few hours i am a grease ball. I haven't bought the Huda one,maybe that would mattify the heck out of my skin once and for all. And i do my skincare prep accordingly and all that,i am on tret also and i moisturize well,but that's just how my skin is. What i need is a gooooood setting spray for oily skin. I’m definitely guilty of bringing my foundation under my eyes, putting concealer on top and then setting it with pressed powder. This was a super helpful video Nikki ☺️🖤 I was wondering if you could do a full Do’s and Don’ts for your entire makeup application? You are insanely talented and you have so much knowledge about what to do and what not to do. It would be very helpful if you did one side of your face using methods that you see that don’t make your makeup look good and then a side of your face that you would recommend doing instead. I have a hard time with cream products vs powder products and when you should use them. I feel like I often use too much of everything then set it and hope that I look good. I could see a lot of people enjoying watching you show us how to get a full complete makeup look using everything the right way! I have been struggling with my foundation and this video is perfect timing. I’m going to keep these in mind as I figure out what is going on! I can’t get my Dior backstage, Gurlain Terra Cotta and many other really nice foundations to look good all day. They are breaking down at the 4-5 hour mark and I look like a mess in the afternoon. It’s so frustrating!

Nikki, your tutorial videos are invaluable! I ordered the HA pressed powder from by Terry on your recommendation. The first time I used it, I placed it under my eyes and about 30 minutes later it looked horrible. Now, I understand it is a finishing powder… so I set with Givenchy then I can finish with by Terry👍😊

Should I be applying the same technique you mentioned for the under eyes (no foundation and just concealer) in the areas that I have acne? Thank you in advance!

Over prepping is such a common mistake! You want hydration but not too much. Lighter weight products is probably better too and give the time for the steps to dry

Great video Nikki! I definitely use more than 3 products since I use actives in the AM, Vit C, CoQ10, pigment inhibitor, eye cream with Vit K, light moisturizer, sunscreen. Totally agree with using only small amounts and letting dry down-especially sunscreen which I give at least 15 mins. While I love makeup, my skincare is more important.
