Organic Chemistry on Khan Academy: Carbon can form covalent bonds with itself and other elements to create a mind-boggling array of structures. In organic chemistry, we will learn about the reactions chemists use to synthesize crazy carbon based structures, as well as the analytical methods to characterize them. We will also think about how those reactions are occurring on a molecular level with reaction mechanisms. Simply put, organic chemistry is like building with molecular Legos. Let's make some beautiful organic molecules!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.
For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

Thanks for the vid. Can you not move hydrogens when drawing resonance structures in organic chemistry?
@ninacastro2514
@ninacastro2514 4 года назад
In case anyone has the same question, here is the answer: "When drawing resonance structures, ONLY the electrons move. EVERY atom remains stationary."

@@ninacastro2514 exactly correct. Isomers are where the atoms can move.

Either you’re using a drawing tablet to draw this (like everyone should use to make these kind of videos) Or you’re really good at drawing with a mouse

@Anna Delamielleure I think only sigma bonds do that, with pi bonds both move freely I think....

I thought that you only needed one electron to form a bond. Why are you using both electrons in the lone pair on the nitrogen to form a bond?

Absolutely necessary to draw the hydrogens when you're first starting so u can keep track

orgo chem be like; draws one line wrong, violates multiple rules/laws of chemistry

@5:41 I see electrons from the initial double bond are placed outside as a lone pair. How would I know how to do this? Is it also a possibility to move one lp to the left of the pentagon and form a double bond there (keeping initial double bond where it is)? Or does the loss of hydrogen of doing this prevent this from happening? - hope i made sense lol

Hi, I'm confused as to how you know how many hydrogens there are per carbon?
@sherwaynemorrison1301
@sherwaynemorrison1301 9 лет назад
+hadt Magana you fist look at the carbon and see how many bonds it has. The most it can have is 4. If it has less than 4 bonds(and that carbon is neutral), the remaining bond(s) must be to hydrogens :)

Many of the resonance structures in this video and others are NOT resonance structures. They are the exact same molecule and are not considered resonance structures..
