Herring and sprats are totally different fish. Herring are larger and chunkier than sprats. Brislings are just smoked sprats. Bumble Bee has some great brisling flavors, and all of King Oscar's flavors are pretty good and affordable. FYI, Bumble Bee used to pack herring, but switched exclusively to sprats last year.

A common thread: oil-packed vs. water-packed tend to have better flavor and texture. Even more so for high-quality oil. A can of good sardines in EVOO makes a great pasta sauce, practically on its own, with maybe the addition of some garlic/black pepper/peperoncini.

I'm 74 years old now and I've been eating sardines regularly since I was a little kid (because my dad was a sardine addict) and my favorite regular brands are King Oscar in olive oil and Crown Prince in olive oil, but they're both smoked and the smoke residue aggravates my sinus allergy. So my next favorite choices are Brunswick Sardines in water, Season Sardines in water, and Beachcliff Sardines in water. I dump the can in a bowl and I drink the water (because it has some omega 3 oil in it), and I add a tablespoon of half and half sesame oil and smoked sesame oil and I chop up the sardines small to make sardine salad. The sesame oil transforms the el-cheapo sardines into a delicacy.

@@CannedFishFiles ~ Hey Matthew, I like to mix the sesame oil equal amount with toasted sesame oil and use it that way. @@CannedFishFiles ~ Hey Matthew, Here's something else I think you might like. This is a recipe I learned about when I was a teenager and I'm 74 years old now. It's a peanut butter, sardine, onions, and mustard sandwich. I know it sounds crazy but it's superb (in my opinion). If you think about it, the orientals have been using peanuts and mustard with fish and chicken recipes for thousands of years. The Chinese call those recipes 'Kung Pao" recipes. Here's the way I do it: I dump a can of sardines in water into a bowl and I drink the water. Then I let it sit for few minutes and I drink the last drops of the water. Then I spread the sardines out on a plate and let them air dry for a couple of hours. Then I butter one piece of whole wheat bread with a generous amount of Smucker's Creamy Peanut Butter and I set it on another plate. Then I dump a big handful of chopped onions onto the peanut butter and I kind of tamp them into the peanut butter. Then I carefully place the sardines onto the top of that, then I squirt a fair amount of mustard on top of the sardines. Then I put another slice of whole wheat bread on top. No salt is needed because the peanut butter is quite salty, and so are the sardines and the mustard. I love those sandwiches. That's one of my most favorite sandwiches in the whole world. If you try it please email me and tell me your opinion about it. My email address is jim.yost911@gmail.com

Ive never tried sardines but I grew up on Cayuga Lake in Upstate NY and during the Smelt run we'd take seine net and catch as many as we could to salt and smoke. Im going out to grab a few cans to try today.

I usually add them to my healthier microwavable lunches & mix them in. It helps to fill me up because some of those microwavable lunches are meatless. Prince Edward in olive oil or Tiny Tots brands is what I get.

In portugal I often buy a cheap can of sardines just to snack when I get home from grocery shopping, they cost abour 1€, used to be about 0.75€ before covid. For the price they are good, but then again, it's still portuguese sardines. Also mackerel, squid, octopuss, etc. Sometimes I mix with some pickles or bean sprouts

4.25 ounces of Northern Catch brand sardines either packed in water or sunflower oil for .89 cents at Aldi. 20 grams of protein for under a dollar and packed with Omega-3. You can't beat that with a stick! I make sardines mixed with salmon and zucchine, mushrooms and tomatoes with spaghetti. Delicious and healthy! Seasoned with oregano and basil in the sauce. Sardines Italian style! Saute onions and garlic in olive oil and butter, add zucchine and mushrooms, season with salt, oregano and basil them add fish and tomatoes, cook till sauce is done. Makes a beautiful sauce for spaghetti. One of my favorite dishes

Fun fact Morocco produces half of all canned sardines worldwide. We also call it the poor man fish because we can get a kilo of fresh sardines for 1$ to 2$ depending on the time or year.

King Oscar are by far my favorite sardines. They have an excellent anchovy as well. Their sardines tend to be a slightly neutral flavor. I have mine with a small pit of Himalayan sea salt, fresh cracked black pepper, some smoked paprika, and a touch of garlic powder. Sometimes I’ll mix in some capers. Season has a really good sardine in olive oil. BJ’s wholesale club carry a sleeve of 10 tins for about $10. Those have a great flavor and they are firm. They make great sandwiches.

I recently discovered the channel in the last week and immediately subscribed and am now devouring all of the Canned Fish Files. I have noticed you have numerous stylish and attractive chopsticks and am curious if you have a particular place you have picked them up. The chopsticks in this video specifically I would love to have a pair of myself. Additionally, I have a high recommendation for canned octopus. There was a specific kind I had last year that was superb but alas, the name escaped me; they were a part of number of canned seafood treats brought by my stepsister's s/o to enjoy that were can only, no box. If I ever can determine what they were I will send you a can post haste. Thank you Matt!
